You can use a DuckDNS hostname for a self-hosted NetBird instance on Ubuntu 26.04, provided the hostname resolves to the server’s current public IP before NetBird requests its TLS certificate. NetBird’s documented quickstart targets Linux VMs generally; an independent report describes Ubuntu 26.04 deployments, but that is not official compatibility certification.
What you need before installing NetBird
NetBird’s quickstart, updated October 5, 2026, specifies these minimums for its Linux VM deployment:
- At least 1 CPU and 2 GB of memory.
- Public inbound access to TCP ports 80 and 443, and UDP port 3478.
- A public domain name that resolves to the VM’s public IP.
- Docker with the Docker Compose plugin, or Docker Compose v2 or later, plus
jqandcurl.
These are the published quickstart requirements, not an Ubuntu 26.04-specific compatibility statement. A September 24, 2026 independent report describes deploying NetBird with DuckDNS on two fresh Ubuntu 26.04 servers, which is useful implementation evidence but not a guarantee from NetBird or Canonical. Point a DuckDNS name at the server
DuckDNS provides an HTTPS API to update the address for a DuckDNS subdomain. Its API can detect the caller’s IPv4 address when the IPv4 value is omitted, or accept an explicit IPv4 or IPv6 address. It also provides a separate API for updating a TXT record. This supports using a base DuckDNS hostname as NetBird’s public name, as long as the record is kept current with the server’s public IP. Configure and verify the DNS name before starting the NetBird installation. The quickstart warns that if the domain does not resolve, Let’s Encrypt certificate issuance can fail and clients may not be able to connect until DNS works.
Choose how NetBird will handle HTTPS
Built-in Traefik
For a new deployment, NetBird recommends its built-in Traefik reverse proxy. The installer includes it in the generated Compose deployment, and Traefik handles TLS automatically through Let’s Encrypt. This is the most direct documented path if you do not already manage a reverse proxy.

An existing reverse proxy
The installer prompts you to select a reverse proxy. If you already operate one, choose the option that fits that setup and follow the corresponding NetBird instructions. The quickstart’s automatic Let’s Encrypt description applies to its built-in Traefik option; do not assume another proxy will obtain or renew certificates in the same way.
Install with the interactive quickstart
NetBird’s documented quickstart downloads and runs getting-started.sh from the latest GitHub release. After ensuring the DuckDNS name resolves and the required ports are reachable, run the script on the Linux server and respond to its reverse-proxy prompt. Select the built-in Traefik option for the recommended automatic TLS path. Follow the script’s prompts to generate and start the Compose deployment. NetBird quickstart

Run the installer unattended
For unattended installation, the quickstart requires NETBIRD_DOMAIN; when using built-in Traefik, it also requires NETBIRD_LETSENCRYPT_EMAIL. Export both variables in the shell that runs the installer. If a terminal is attached but the installation should not prompt for input, set NETBIRD_NON_INTERACTIVE=true as well. These settings do not remove the need to have DNS working first.
Create the first administrator account
The quickstart deployment initially has no users. Once the service is running, open the HTTPS DuckDNS hostname and visit /setup to create the first administrator account. The setup page is available only while the instance has no users.

Decide whether you need the optional NetBird Proxy
The base hostname is distinct from the optional NetBird Proxy configuration. The quickstart says to point a wildcard record such as *.netbird.example.com at the server when enabling that service. DuckDNS’s documented API covers subdomain address updates and TXT changes, but those facts alone do not establish that the wildcard DNS and certificate-validation workflow for the optional Proxy works with DuckDNS. Do not treat the base-hostname setup as proof of that separate configuration.
