Yes, you can replace several recurring cloud or media subscriptions with software running on a computer you control—but you also inherit the hardware, backups, updates, security and uptime work. For most readers, the four clearest pairings are Immich for a personal photo library, Nextcloud for files and collaboration, Jellyfin for your own video and media collection, and Navidrome for music files you already own. None supplies a commercial catalog, and none is automatically cheaper once storage, electricity, replacement hardware and your time are included.
What “self-hosted” changes
A subscription service operates the servers, network, storage and much of the recovery process for you. With self-hosting, the application runs on a machine you operate or control: an existing desktop, a small server, a virtual machine or optional network-attached storage (NAS). You choose the storage and access rules, but you are also responsible when the machine is offline, a disk fails, an update breaks a component or a password is lost.
Recommended Free Tools
That trade is worthwhile when you want control over personal files, avoid moving a large library between providers, or keep using software after a subscription changes. It is less attractive when you need guaranteed availability, a polished zero-maintenance experience or a service that includes content you do not own.
- Availability: power, internet access and the host machine become your responsibility.
- Data protection: backups must be designed, encrypted where appropriate and tested by you.
- Maintenance: operating-system patches, application updates, certificates and account recovery are part of the job.
- Cost: compare the complete cost over the period you care about, not only a monthly license.
Choose the replacement by the data you already have
| Paid function you want to replace | Self-hosted fit | What you must already have | Main responsibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phone photo backup and browsing | Immich | Photos and videos plus a server and storage | Reliable uploads, library storage and backups |
| Cloud files, sync and teamwork | Nextcloud | Files, user accounts and a host reachable by your devices | Storage, collaboration access and recovery |
| Personal movie, TV, music, photo or book library | Jellyfin | Media files you have the right to store and stream | Media organization, server capacity and remote access |
| Personal music streaming | Navidrome | A collection of music files and compatible clients | Music storage, metadata and availability |
These are functional pairings, not promises of one-for-one feature parity. Check each project’s current documentation before committing to a migration; interfaces, supported clients and backup behavior can change.

Immich: a self-hosted photo library and phone-backup candidate
What it replaces
Immich is aimed at the role normally filled by a hosted photo library: keeping a personal collection on a server and providing mobile apps for uploading and browsing. Its official project site links Android and iOS applications, a server and documentation. The landing page reviewed for this guide did not establish a complete feature list, so treat exact backup, search, sharing and editing behavior as items to verify in the current documentation rather than assumptions.
When Immich fits
- You want the original photo and video files on storage you control.
- Your primary capture devices are Android or iOS phones supported by the current mobile clients.
- You are prepared to monitor uploads and confirm that backups actually completed.
Immich does not remove the need for a second copy. A phone upload is a synchronization or transfer path, not automatically a disaster-recovery plan. If the server disk fails before another copy exists, the library can still be lost.
A practical deployment sequence
- Inventory the library. Record the current photo and video locations, file formats, approximate size and any albums or shared items that must be preserved.
- Prepare a host and storage. Use a supported server installation from the project documentation. Keep the application data and the photo library on storage with enough free space for growth; the project’s current minimum hardware requirements should be checked before purchase.
- Install the server and create an administrator account. Use a unique password and restrict administration to trusted devices or a protected network during initial setup.
- Install the Android or iOS client. Sign in to the server address, select the device folders that should upload and watch the first transfer for errors.
- Validate originals. Open several older and newer items from the server and compare counts and dates with the phone. Do not erase phone originals until you have a separate backup.
- Automate a second copy. Back up the library and the application’s database or configuration according to the project’s current instructions. Periodically restore a sample so you know the backup is usable.
Limits to plan for
Photo and video libraries grow quickly, and video can require substantially more storage than still images. Remote viewing also depends on your upload bandwidth and the server being online. The available evidence does not establish a universal minimum server specification, so avoid sizing a system from a generic recommendation; measure your library and follow the current installation guidance.
Nextcloud: the broadest replacement for cloud files and collaboration
What it replaces
Nextcloud describes its Files product as self-hosted file storage and synchronization with desktop, mobile and web interfaces. Its Hub also bundles Talk, Groupware, Office, Assistant and Flow. That makes it broader than a simple folder-sync service: one installation can cover document access, calendars or mail-oriented groupware, meetings and workflow features, depending on the components you enable.

When Nextcloud fits
- You need files available from a browser, computer and phone.
- You want user accounts, sharing and collaboration in the same platform.
- You can operate a database, storage and a web service, or are willing to learn those operational tasks.
Because it can host several functions, Nextcloud deserves deliberate scope. Start with Files, then add collaboration components only after the basic file service, authentication and backups are reliable.
Deployment sequence
- Define the boundary. Decide which folders belong in Nextcloud, who needs access and whether external sharing is allowed. Keep private administrative data separate from ordinary shared files.
- Select the host. An existing suitable server can work; a dedicated NAS is optional rather than mandatory. Confirm the current Nextcloud server, database and storage requirements before installing.
- Install the base service. Follow the project’s current installation method, create an administrator account and configure the data directory outside any publicly served document directory when the documentation recommends it.
- Connect clients. Install the desktop synchronization client and mobile app, then test a small folder before moving a large archive. Confirm that edits made on one device appear on the others.
- Add Hub components selectively. Enable Talk, Groupware, Office, Assistant or Flow only when you have a defined use case. Each additional component increases update and backup scope.
- Test sharing and recovery. Create a non-administrator test account, share a file, revoke access and restore a deleted test file from backup.
Operational trade-offs
Nextcloud can consolidate several subscriptions, but consolidation also concentrates risk. A failed host can affect files, calendars and collaboration at once. Use separate backup media, document administrator credentials and schedule updates rather than applying them during an important meeting or while a large synchronization is running.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesJellyfin: stream the movies and shows you already own
What it replaces
Jellyfin organizes and streams a personal collection of movies, television, music, photos and books to clients on many platforms. It is not a source of a commercial streaming catalog. You supply the files and must have the right to store and play them. Jellyfin states, “We do not run servers for users,” which is a concise description of the hosting responsibility.
The project also states, “The Jellyfin server and official clients are free to download, now and always.” That describes software availability, not the total cost of running a server, storing media or providing remote bandwidth.

When Jellyfin fits
- You have a legally acquired movie, television, music, photo or book collection.
- You want one catalog and playback experience across supported devices.
- You accept that transcoding, remote access and availability depend on your own hardware and network.
Deployment sequence
- Organize the source files. Separate movies, series, music and other media into a predictable folder structure. Keep an untouched copy while you test the catalog.
- Install the server. Use the current platform-specific instructions, create an administrator account and place the media on storage with room for additions.
- Create libraries. Point each Jellyfin library at the appropriate folder and let metadata scanning complete. Correct naming or permissions problems before importing everything.
- Test local playback. Play several files on the server’s local network, including formats with different audio and subtitle characteristics.
- Check client support. Install clients on the televisions, phones or browsers you actually use. A client being available does not guarantee identical feature support on every platform.
- Decide on remote access. If you expose the service outside your home, use the project’s current security guidance, strong authentication and an encrypted connection. Otherwise keep it limited to your local network.
Catalog versus service
A hosted streaming subscription supplies licensed content and operates the delivery infrastructure. Jellyfin supplies neither. Its value is control over a collection you already possess, consistent local access and the ability to choose how that collection is organized. If you are looking for new releases included in a monthly catalog, this is the wrong category of replacement.
Navidrome: personal music streaming from your own files
What it replaces
Navidrome serves a personal music collection through a web player and compatible mobile clients. It is designed for music files you own, not for replacing a commercial streaming catalog or supplying discovery-based access to tracks you have not acquired.
Scale evidence, with the necessary qualification
The Navidrome home page reports that the project was “tested with ~900K songs – 2/3 FLAC, 1/3 MP3.” This is a project-reported test, the page gives no year, and it is not an independent benchmark. Use it as an indication that large libraries are a design target, not as a performance guarantee for your hardware or network.
Deployment sequence
- Audit your music files. Check that albums, artists, track numbers and cover art are tagged consistently. Keep the original files before changing metadata in bulk.
- Prepare storage and a host. Follow the current Navidrome installation instructions for your operating system and leave capacity for new albums and a backup copy.
- Point the service at the music directory. Start with a small representative subset, allow the index to build and correct permission or tagging errors.
- Test the web player and a mobile client. Verify login, playlists, search, album art and playback when the device is on the same network.
- Plan remote listening deliberately. Remote playback consumes upload bandwidth and requires the server to be reachable. Use the project’s current recommendations for secure access rather than opening an unprotected port.
- Back up both files and metadata. Music files are the irreplaceable collection; database or configuration data preserves playlists and settings. Test a restore before deleting any old copy.
Who should choose it
Navidrome is a strong fit for listeners with a purchased, ripped or otherwise legitimately held library who want their own player and account system. It is not a cost-free route to the breadth of a commercial catalog: acquiring and storing the music remains your responsibility.

What you need before hosting any of them
Host options
A dedicated NAS is one possible route, not a requirement. You can reuse a suitable computer or run the service on another server you control. The appropriate choice depends on storage capacity, expected simultaneous users, media transcoding, noise, electricity and your comfort with maintenance. The available project information does not establish one universal minimum specification for these applications.
Network and access
- Assign the host a stable local address so clients can find it.
- Use strong, unique administrator credentials and enable available multi-factor protection where the project supports it.
- Keep administration separate from public access. Remote access should use an encrypted connection and the project’s current security guidance.
- Confirm that your internet upload speed can support the number of remote users and the type of media being served.
Backups and recovery
Use a 3-2-1-style plan as a practical baseline: keep at least three copies, on at least two kinds of storage, with at least one copy away from the host. Encrypt backup media when it contains personal files, and periodically perform a real restore. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a recovery plan.
- Photos: preserve originals and the application database or configuration needed to reconstruct albums and accounts.
- Files: back up the data directory, database and configuration; test restoring a file and an account.
- Video and music: protect the media files first, then catalog metadata, artwork, playlists and settings.
Updates and monitoring
Subscribe to release notices for each project, read upgrade notes and keep a maintenance window. Monitor free storage, backup jobs, disk health and failed logins. Write down the server address, administrator recovery method and the steps needed to rebuild the host.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Total cost: compare ownership, not just the subscription
| Cost category | Questions to answer | Why it can change the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Host hardware | Can you reuse an existing computer, or do you need a server or NAS? | Up-front hardware can exceed many months of subscription fees. |
| Storage | How large is the library today, and how fast will it grow? | Photos, high-resolution video and lossless music require different capacities. |
| Backup media | Where will the second and off-site copies live? | Redundant storage is essential to recovery, not an optional upgrade. |
| Electricity and noise | Will the host run continuously, and is it acceptable in your home? | Power draw and fan noise recur every month. |
| Connectivity | Do you need remote access, a faster upload connection or a domain and certificate? | Remote use adds configuration and possible service costs. |
| Time | Who applies updates, checks backups and fixes outages? | Your time has value even when no invoice is attached. |
No trustworthy like-for-like cost study establishes that these projects save money in every scenario. Calculate your own total for the period you would otherwise keep paying, including replacement drives, backup storage and electricity.

How to decide which one to install first
- Start with the least critical library. A test music or media collection is easier to rebuild than the only copy of family photos or work documents.
- Measure your workload. Record storage size, expected users, remote-access needs and client devices before buying hardware.
- Prove backup and restore. Do not migrate the primary collection until a separate copy and a restoration procedure work.
- Add one service at a time. Isolating installations makes it easier to identify whether a failure comes from storage, networking, an update or the application.
- Review after a month. Check uptime, failed uploads, storage growth and maintenance time. Keep the subscription if the operational burden is not worth the control you gained.
Common failure modes and fixes
“The app is installed, but my files are missing.”
Check the service account’s permissions, the configured data path and whether the host mounted the intended disk after reboot. Stop the service before changing paths, and preserve the original directory until the corrected configuration has been tested.
“Phone uploads stopped.”
Check battery-optimization and background-data settings on the phone, available server storage, the client’s signed-in account and the server logs. Confirm with a newly captured test photo rather than assuming that an old queue represents current operation.
“Playback works at home but not away.”
Verify that the server is powered on, the external address or secure access method is current, the connection is encrypted and the home upload link is sufficient. Test with a small file first; high-bitrate video may require transcoding or a stronger host.
“An update caused an outage.”
Read the project’s release notes, capture logs and restore the last known-good backup or snapshot if necessary. Avoid repeatedly upgrading and downgrading without preserving the database and configuration state.
“The disk failed.”
Replace the failed hardware, rebuild the host using documented installation steps and restore the application data and media from a verified backup. If no independent copy exists, recovery may be impossible; this is why backup testing belongs before migration.
