Neither option is universally safer. A self-custody wallet removes an exchange from control of your private keys, but makes you solely responsible for backups, devices and every transaction. Keeping crypto on an exchange is easier for buying, selling and recovering account access, but exposes you to the provider’s security, solvency, withdrawal and regulatory risks.

For many Australians, the most defensible approach is risk allocation: use a properly checked exchange for active trading and fiat transfers, keep only the working balance there, and consider hardware self-custody for long-term holdings after you can securely manage a recovery phrase and verify transactions. Crypto transfers are generally irreversible, so either arrangement requires strong scam resistance.

What the two choices actually mean

Self-custody wallet

A self-custody, or self-hosted, wallet gives you control of the private keys that authorise transactions. The wallet software or device is an interface; the person who possesses the recovery information controls the assets on the blockchain. If someone obtains your private key or recovery phrase, they can usually move the funds without asking you.

A software wallet is normally a hot wallet: its signing keys are handled on an internet-connected phone or computer. A hardware wallet is intended to keep private keys on a dedicated device that is normally offline, or “cold,” until you approve a transaction. Cold storage can reduce exposure to remote attacks, but it does not make a transaction automatically safe.

Exchange custody

With exchange custody, the platform controls the wallet infrastructure and records your balance in your account. You receive account-based access rather than direct possession of the underlying private key. The exchange can provide an on-ramp from Australian dollars, trading markets, liquidity, customer support and account-recovery procedures. Those are convenience and access features, not guarantees that the provider will remain solvent, available or secure.

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) says that offering a self-custody wallet is unlikely, by itself, to amount to providing a custodial or depository service. Custody of crypto-assets that are financial products can instead be a financial service, so the legal treatment depends on what is being held and how the service operates.

Safety comparison at a glance

Factor Self-custody wallet Exchange custody
Who controls the key? You control the private key or recovery phrase. The provider controls the wallet infrastructure; you control an account login.
Recovery burden You must create, protect and test backups. Losing the key can permanently lose the crypto. The provider may offer password and identity-based recovery, subject to its policies and availability.
Online attack exposure Hardware cold storage can reduce online exposure; hot-wallet devices remain exposed to malware and phishing. The platform is a high-value target, and your account can be taken over through phishing, SIM attacks or stolen credentials.
Counterparty and insolvency risk You do not depend on an exchange’s solvency or withdrawal policy for the keys. You depend on the provider’s custody controls, solvency, operations and ability to process withdrawals.
Buying, selling and Australian-dollar transfers Usually requires a separate on-ramp or exchange. Integrated buying, selling, liquidity and fiat on/off-ramp are typical advantages.
Transaction errors Wrong addresses, malicious approvals and unsafe signing can cause irreversible loss. You may have platform confirmation screens, but a mistaken blockchain withdrawal is still generally irreversible.
Fees and withdrawal friction Network fees and the practical cost of secure devices and backups apply. Trading, spread and withdrawal charges, limits and review delays depend on the provider and its terms.
Australian checks and complaints There may be no custody provider to contact; responsibility rests largely with you. You can check the legal entity, claimed licence and Australian support or dispute channels, although these do not guarantee recovery.
Best fit People prepared to manage keys for longer-term holdings and accept full responsibility. People who need frequent trading, liquidity, fiat access or assisted account recovery.

Why self-custody can be safer—and where it can fail

The advantage: direct control

Self-custody removes a major category of exchange-counterparty risk. A provider cannot freeze your exchange account, change its withdrawal policy or become insolvent while holding the private keys for that particular wallet. You can broadcast a valid transaction without waiting for a company’s internal approval.

That independence comes with an unforgiving rule. Moneysmart states: “If you lose your private key, you usually lose the crypto.” There is no central password-reset desk for a blockchain address. A lost, destroyed or unreadable recovery phrase can make a balance inaccessible even when the public address remains visible.

Hardware storage reduces one exposure, not every exposure

ASIC custody guidance prefers physically isolated hardware where appropriate and calls for robust physical security and backup or recovery processes. A hardware device can keep signing keys away from an always-connected computer, reducing the opportunity for ordinary online malware to extract them. It cannot protect a recovery phrase that you photograph, upload to cloud storage, type into a website or disclose to a caller.

Security also depends on what the device displays and what you approve. A compromised computer can substitute a destination address before you confirm. A deceptive decentralised-application prompt can request a token approval that allows later transfers. Verify the destination and transaction details on the hardware device itself, not only in the browser window.

Irreversible human errors

Australian financial-crime regulator AUSTRAC says: “Cryptocurrency transactions are not reversible.” Sending to the wrong network or address, approving a malicious contract, or paying an impersonator generally cannot be undone by a bank chargeback. Start with a small test transfer, wait for the expected confirmation, and only then send the larger amount.

Common self-custody attack paths

  • Fake wallet software: a look-alike app can capture a seed phrase or redirect a payment. Obtain software from the wallet maker’s verified channel and check the publisher before installing.
  • Phishing and social engineering: a message may claim that a wallet is suspended or a transaction needs urgent approval. No legitimate support agent needs your recovery phrase.
  • Unsafe backups: screenshots, cloud notes, email drafts and unencrypted text files create copies an attacker can search.
  • Physical loss: fire, theft or water damage can destroy a single paper backup. Consider a durable offline backup and a second secure location, while ensuring that every copy is protected from unauthorised access.
  • Unverified signing: approving a request you do not understand can transfer assets or grant continuing permissions.

Why an exchange can be safer for some tasks—and where it can fail

Convenience and assisted recovery

An exchange can consolidate Australian-dollar deposits, market orders, sales and withdrawals in one account. Liquidity and an order interface are useful when you trade regularly. Customer support and identity checks may help you recover a compromised login, although recovery is not guaranteed and can be slow during an incident.

Provider, account and platform risks

  • Hacking or operational compromise: an attacker may target the exchange’s wallets, authentication systems or withdrawal process.
  • Insolvency: if a provider fails, customers may face delays, restrictions or losses while assets and claims are resolved.
  • Withdrawal freezes: maintenance, compliance reviews, liquidity stress or a policy change can prevent access when you expect it.
  • Account takeover: stolen passwords, reused credentials, SIM-swap attacks or a hijacked email account can lead to unauthorised trades or withdrawals.
  • Impersonation: a fake exchange website, app, browser add-on or “support” account can collect your login or recovery information.
  • Jurisdiction and licensing: an overseas or unlicensed operator may leave you with limited Australian dispute options.

Moneysmart warns that many crypto providers are not licensed, so consumers “may not be protected if the platform fails or is hacked.” It also warns that scammers impersonate legitimate exchanges and says you should never provide your password to another person.

What exchange custody does not solve

An exchange can prevent you from having to store a seed phrase, but it cannot make a bad address or a scam payment reversible. If you authorise a withdrawal to an impostor, the exchange may have no technical way to retrieve it. Treat account security, withdrawal allowlists where available, and destination verification as essential controls rather than optional extras.

Australian checks before depositing money

1. Identify the exact legal entity

Do not rely on an app name, logo or a search advertisement. Find the company’s legal name, Australian entity details, registered address, terms of service and the entity responsible for custody and withdrawals. A group can operate several websites or brands under different legal entities, so check the specific service you intend to use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Verify any claimed ASIC licence

Use ASIC’s Professional Registers to verify an Australian financial-services licence claim rather than trusting a badge on a webpage. A licence can improve screening and access to dispute pathways, but it does not guarantee the investment, the value of a token, the provider’s solvency or protection against hacking. The register check is one control, not a safety certificate.

3. Check AUSTRAC obligations and Australian terms

Read the provider’s Australian terms for identity checks, transaction monitoring, withdrawal limits, fees, account suspension, complaint handling and the governing jurisdiction. AUSTRAC said on 8 May 2026 that reforms expand supervision to custody, brokerage and other virtual-asset services. That change increases regulatory oversight, but it does not remove market, technology or counterparty risk.

4. Use only the genuine site or app

Type the address yourself or use a bookmark you created from a verified source. Do not log in through a link in an unsolicited email, social-media message or search advertisement. Check the spelling of the domain and the app publisher. Moneysmart has documented phishing, fake apps, malicious browser add-ons and exchange impersonation.

5. Harden the account before funding it

  1. Use a unique, long password stored in a reputable password manager.
  2. Enable the strongest available multi-factor method; a security key or authenticator is preferable to SMS where the service supports it.
  3. Secure the email account used for recovery with its own unique password and multi-factor authentication.
  4. Set withdrawal notifications and, where offered, an address allowlist or cooling-off period.
  5. Make a small deposit and withdrawal to confirm the bank account, network and identity-review process before increasing the balance.

How to set up hardware self-custody safely

Buying a device is not the same as becoming ready for self-custody. Follow a process that protects the initial setup, the recovery material and each transaction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Use a trusted purchase channel. Buy hardware through the manufacturer’s verified channel or an authorised seller. Reject a device that arrives with a prewritten recovery phrase, an opened package or instructions telling you to use a supplied seed.
  2. Initialise it yourself. Install the wallet software from the verified source, update the device as instructed, and generate a new recovery phrase on the device. Never enter a seed phrase into a website, computer, phone note or support form.
  3. Record the phrase offline. Write it accurately or use a suitable durable offline medium. Keep it secret, separate from the device, and protected against theft, fire and water. Do not create digital photographs or cloud copies.
  4. Confirm the backup. Use the device’s recovery-check function, if provided, to verify every word. A backup that was copied incorrectly is not a backup.
  5. Practise with a small amount. Receive a small test deposit, confirm the address on the device screen, and send a small withdrawal back. Learn the network, confirmation and fee settings before transferring a substantial balance.
  6. Verify every destination on the device. Compare the address and network shown on the hardware screen with the intended recipient. If a browser or chat window shows a different address, stop.
  7. Review approvals and permissions. For applications that request token or contract permissions, understand what is being authorised and revoke unused permissions through a trusted tool. A hardware wallet protects the key; it does not judge the contract for you.
  8. Plan succession and recovery. Decide how a trusted person could locate the recovery instructions without exposing the phrase to unauthorised people. Test the recovery plan before relying on it for a large balance.

Choosing a setup by activity, skill and amount at risk

Frequent buying, selling or Australian-dollar transfers

An exchange is usually more practical for active transactions because it combines an on-ramp, order execution and liquidity. Reduce the downside by keeping only the amount needed for near-term activity, using strong authentication and moving longer-term holdings to self-custody only after you can manage the backup process.

Long-term holding with limited trading

Hardware self-custody can reduce dependence on an exchange and online attack exposure. It is appropriate only if you can reliably protect the recovery phrase, maintain a physical backup and verify transactions. If losing the phrase would be more likely than an exchange failure for you, self-custody may increase rather than reduce your personal risk.

Small balances or beginners

Start with an amount whose loss would not affect rent, bills or emergency savings. Learn deposits, withdrawals, address formats, network selection and authentication with a small test. Do not rush into a hardware purchase or move a large balance because of a message claiming that an account is at risk.

Higher-value holdings

Consider separating operational funds from long-term funds, using more than one secure backup location and documenting a recovery plan. Avoid concentrating every asset in one exchange account, one device or one physical hiding place. The more valuable the holding, the more important independent verification and rehearsed recovery become.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to do when something goes wrong

If an exchange login or email is compromised

  1. Use the provider’s official site or app, not a link in a message.
  2. Change the exchange and email passwords from a clean device.
  3. Terminate active sessions and API keys, disable unauthorised withdrawal addresses and contact the provider through its published support channel.
  4. Contact your mobile carrier if a SIM takeover is possible and preserve messages, transaction IDs and timestamps for a report.
  5. Check bank accounts and other services that reused the same credentials.

If a recovery phrase may have been exposed

Assume every asset controlled by that phrase is at risk. From a newly initialised, trusted wallet, create a new wallet and transfer funds to it after checking each destination on the device. Do not type the exposed phrase into a website to “validate” it, and do not wait for an attacker to move the funds first.

If you sent crypto to the wrong address or a scammer

Save the transaction hash, destination address, amount, time and messages. Contact the exchange or service involved immediately and report the scam to the relevant Australian authorities. Recovery is uncertain because blockchain transfers are generally irreversible; anyone promising guaranteed retrieval in exchange for an upfront fee may be running a second scam.

Scam trends make verification essential

Moneysmart reported that takedowns of cryptocurrency investment scams increased by almost 30% in FY26, with ASIC removing 3,106 scams during the financial year. It also reported that ASIC took down more than 19,400 online scams during the 2025–26 financial year, up 182% on the previous year. These figures describe scam takedowns, not the relative failure rate of self-custody versus exchanges. No reliable statistic establishes that one storage method has fewer losses overall.

Use those figures as a reason to slow down, not as proof that a particular platform or wallet is safe. Ignore guaranteed-return claims, unsolicited investment coaching, urgent “account recovery” requests and anyone asking for a password, seed phrase or remote access to your device.

How to make the decision

Ask the following questions before choosing where to keep a balance:

  • Do I need daily trading, liquidity or Australian-dollar withdrawals?
  • Can I protect a recovery phrase for years and recover it after losing the device?
  • Would a provider freeze or delay access create a serious problem?
  • Would losing the phrase, approving a malicious transaction or sending to a wrong address be more likely for me than an exchange failure?
  • Have I verified the provider’s legal entity, licence claim, Australian terms and official contact channels?
  • Is the amount large enough to justify separating a spending balance from long-term storage?

The answers often lead to a split arrangement rather than an all-or-nothing choice: exchange custody for active operations, and self-custody for funds that do not need immediate liquidity. Keep the division simple enough that you can monitor it and recover it under stress.

Bottom line for Australian users

Self-custody is safer from exchange solvency, withdrawal-policy and account-access risk only when you can competently secure the key and verify every transaction. Exchange custody is safer from seed-phrase loss and may be easier to use, but it adds provider, account, hacking, insolvency and impersonation risks. Check the exact Australian entity and any ASIC licence claim, understand AUSTRAC-related obligations and the provider’s withdrawal terms, secure every login, and treat every crypto transfer as potentially permanent. The sensible choice depends on your skill, holding period, liquidity needs and the amount you can afford to lose—not on a universal ranking of wallets or exchanges.
