To see what strangers can find about you, audit several identifiers—not just your name—then document every result and submit removals at both the search-engine and source-site level. Search your name with location and affiliations, check each email address and phone number in a logged-out browser, review social and people-search listings, and recheck because aggregated records often reappear.
Run a practical exposure audit
Use a private window or a browser session in which you are logged out. Personalization can otherwise change the results you see. Work through these searches separately:
- Full name combinations: Search your name with your city, state, employer, school and known usernames. Try spelling variants and middle initials.
- Email addresses: Search every address you use, one at a time. Look for profile pages, old forum posts, cached documents and breach-related discussions.
- Phone numbers: Search each number in multiple formats, including country or area code variations.
- Usernames and profiles: Check social networks, old accounts, public comments and profile pages for information that connects an alias to your identity.
- People-search and public-record indexes: Review the reports and identity matches shown by these services. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) explains that people-search sites can combine data brokers, public social profiles, and federal, state and local records.
Do not post complete phone numbers, addresses, identity numbers or other identifiers in a public forum while asking for help. Redact sensitive portions in screenshots.

For every finding, record the exact page URL, the information displayed, the date and time checked, and the action you requested. Save confirmation emails or case numbers. This creates a baseline for proving that a listing changed—or returned—during later checks.
#1 Best Overall
| Record | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Exact URL | Search results and profiles can change; the direct page identifies the source to contact. |
| Displayed data | Shows whether the page exposes an address, phone number, email, employer, relatives or another identifier. |
| Date checked | Lets you measure response time and schedule a recheck. |
| Requested action and confirmation | Provides an audit trail if the data remains or reappears. |
Remove personal information from Google Search
Google’s Results about you feature allows eligible users to enter identifying details, monitor matching results and request removal. Google lists home addresses, phone numbers, email addresses and certain government identification numbers among information that may qualify. Availability is rolling out to adults in some markets, so the controls you see can depend on your country and account.
- Open Google’s Results about you tool while signed in.
- Enter the identifying details you want Google to look for, such as your name, address, phone number or email.
- Review matching Search results and select the result that exposes your information.
- Submit the removal request and retain the confirmation.
- Use the monitoring view to check for new matching results, then update your evidence log.
Eligibility is not unlimited. Google may exclude pages with public-interest value, including some government, educational and newspaper sites. Approval can also depend on the specific information and page.

Google states: “When you remove a result that shows your personal info from Google Search, it doesn’t mean that the info is gone from the internet.” Search-result removal changes visibility in Google; it does not delete the source webpage. If the page still contains your details, contact the site owner or follow that site’s own removal or opt-out procedure.

People-search companies compile reports from multiple sources and sell them to paying users. Removing one report therefore does not remove copies held by another service, a different profile or a newly refreshed data set.
- Find the site’s privacy, suppression or opt-out page. Follow its identity-matching instructions without submitting more information than necessary.
- Confirm the exact listing you want removed and submit the request.
- Save the confirmation, URL and date in your log.
- Search again after the site’s stated processing period. If no opt-out link is visible, the FTC suggests searching the site name together with “opt out” or “remove my information.”
- Repeat the process for duplicate listings and other people-search sites.
Expect this to be recurring maintenance rather than a single deletion. Aggregators can obtain replacement data from public records, profiles and other brokers, so schedule periodic searches and act on reappearances.
Choose the right removal route
| Route | Scope | Durability | Your control | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google Search removal | Hides an eligible result from Google Search | Requires monitoring; source may remain | Do-it-yourself request | Result URL, request status and rechecks |
| Source-page deletion | Removes or edits the information on the originating website | Usually stronger for that page, but copies may exist | Contact the owner or use its process | Owner response and changed page |
| People-search opt-out | Suppresses a listing on one service | Duplicates and refreshed reports can return | Separate request for each service | Listing URL, confirmation and later checks |
Secure accounts after an exposure
Public information can make targeted scams and account takeover attempts easier. The FTC recommends a strong password and an additional factor, such as a one-time code or authenticator app. Use a different long password for every important account; a password manager can generate, store and autofill those credentials and may provide breach alerts. Turn on multi-factor authentication first for email, financial, cloud-storage and social accounts, because control of an email account can enable resets elsewhere.

What to expect after submitting removals
Search visibility, source-page content and data-broker reports are separate layers. A successful Google request can leave the original page accessible through another search engine or a direct link. A source owner can delete a page while an aggregator still displays an older copy. Treat each confirmation as applying only to the named result or service, then verify the actual page and repeat the audit on a schedule.

Why does my information keep showing up after I opt out?
People-search sites aggregate records from multiple brokers, public profiles and government sources. A second site or refreshed report can recreate the listing, so submit each site’s opt-out request and recheck periodically.
Does removing a result from Google delete my address or phone number from the web?
No. Google removal affects the Search result only. Contact the site hosting the information and use its deletion or opt-out process to change the source page.
What should I search besides my name?
Search each email address, phone number, known username and name variation, adding your city, employer or school where useful.
