Kīlauea’s Episode 55 began at 3:19 a.m. HST on October 17, 2026, ending the longest no-fountain interval of its current eruptive cycle. The north vent sent lava about 720 feet (220 meters) into the air, while the plume rose to roughly 25,000 feet above sea level. Lava and eruptive vents remained inside Halemaʻumaʻu crater in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, but vog, falling volcanic particles and sudden rockfalls make current closures and official notices essential.

What happened in Episode 55

The U.S. Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported that Episode 55 started at 3:19 a.m. HST on October 17. In a 5:22 a.m. update, HVO measured the north-vent fountain at approximately 720 feet (220 meters). The eruption plume reached about 25,000 feet above sea level.

USGS classified Kīlauea at WATCH and assigned an aviation color code of ORANGE. Those designations reflect an active summit eruption and aviation concern; they do not mean that lava is threatening every part of the island.

Current detail Reported value Practical meaning
Episode start 3:19 a.m. HST, October 17, 2026 Activity can intensify or pause quickly between official updates.
North-vent fountain About 720 feet (220 meters) Viewing from a safe, authorized location does not make the vent area safe to approach.
Plume height About 25,000 feet above sea level Ash and fine volcanic material may affect aviation and downwind air quality.
Lava location Halemaʻumaʻu crater, inside Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park No lava flows outside the crater were reported in the notice.
USGS status WATCH; aviation color ORANGE Check the latest USGS notice before making travel or flight decisions.

Most fountaining episodes in this eruption have lasted a day or less. The pattern is therefore episodic rather than a single uninterrupted lava fountain, and a pause does not by itself mean the eruption has ended.

Why the pause was unusual

The current summit eruptive cycle began on December 23, 2024. The National Park Service said the eruption before Episode 55 occurred on August 25. In its October 7 notice, NPS counted 43 days without fountains, the longest no-fountain interval in that cycle at that point. Because Episode 55 did not begin until October 17, the calendar gap from August 25 to the new episode extended to roughly 53 days—about seven and a half weeks.

The pause mattered because Kīlauea continued showing signs of pressure beneath the summit rather than simply going quiet. NPS reported ongoing summit inflation and more than 200 shallow earthquakes during the preceding week. A magnitude 3.4 earthquake on September 30 caused small rockfalls, illustrating why a quiet surface can still coincide with unstable crater walls.

Can you safely see the lava?

You may be able to see the glow or fountains from an authorized overlook, but access is controlled and can change without warning. NPS temporarily closed Halemaʻumaʻu Trail and part of Byron Ledge Trail, a combined 1.3 miles, because inflation and seismicity increased the chance of rockfall. Viewing areas on the Keanakākoʻi side were also closed.

  1. Check the newest USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory activity notice and Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park alert before leaving.
  2. Use only routes and overlooks that park staff have identified as open that day.
  3. Stay outside barricades and closed-trail boundaries, even if other visitors appear to be crossing them.
  4. Keep well back from crater and cliff edges. NPS warns that unstable edges can collapse without warning.
  5. Be prepared for a closure, reroute or reduced visibility if fountains, earthquakes, wind or gas conditions change.

Do not treat a distant view as proof that conditions are harmless. The danger near the summit includes falling rock and volcanic material, not only advancing lava.

What hazards remain outside the crater?

Vog and sulfur dioxide

Sulfur dioxide from the eruption can form vog, a volcanic haze that degrades air quality downwind. People with asthma or other respiratory conditions may be especially sensitive. Wind direction and concentration can change, so current air-quality guidance matters more than a fixed expectation based on the previous day.

Tephra and Pele’s hair

Tephra includes ash, pumice, scoria, Pele’s hair and reticulite. Larger particles generally fall close to the vents, while lighter material can travel farther and be lifted again by wind. These particles can irritate skin, eyes and lungs. Avoid handling deposits, protect eyes and breathing passages when advised, and follow park or county health instructions.

Earthquakes and rockfall

Summit inflation and shallow earthquakes can destabilize crater walls. Rockfall may occur suddenly, including after an earthquake that feels minor. That is why trail and overlook closures can remain in place even when lava is confined to Halemaʻumaʻu.

Is Kīlauea threatening homes or roads?

The Episode 55 notice placed all eruptive vents and lava flows inside Halemaʻumaʻu crater, within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. It did not report lava moving toward homes or roads. The immediate operational restrictions described by NPS concern summit trails, viewing areas and cliff stability.

That does not eliminate wider effects. Vog and airborne tephra can move beyond the crater, and earthquakes or falling debris can create localized hazards. Conditions can change rapidly, so residents and travelers should rely on current USGS and NPS notices rather than assume that today’s lava location will remain unchanged.

How Episode 55 fits Kīlauea’s record

According to the Associated Press, Kīlauea had already set a record for the number of fountaining episodes within one eruption by reaching 48 episodes on June 2, 2026. Episode 55 extends that record.

HVO geologist Katie Mulliken explained that these episodes are treated as one overall eruption because lava has repeatedly emerged from the same vents in a summit crater. A pause between fountains therefore does not automatically mark a new eruption; Episode 55 is part of the cycle that began in December 2024.

What to check before visiting

  • The latest USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory status, including the alert level and aviation color code.
  • Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park’s current trail, overlook and road closures.
  • Wind and air-quality conditions if you are sensitive to sulfur dioxide or volcanic particles.
  • Whether the viewing location you plan to use is open at the time you arrive—not merely listed as open in an older guide.

Episode 55 is visually dramatic but geographically confined in the reported update. The safest way to see it is from an officially open location, with enough flexibility to turn back when park staff close an area or conditions shift.
