A nonce is a value that helps a protocol distinguish one message or operation from another. Depending on the protocol, it may help reject a replayed request, protect an encrypted record, or let a miner search for a valid block. “One-time” is a useful shorthand, not a guarantee: a nonce can be random or derived from protocol state, and its security depends on how the protocol generates, binds, and checks it.

What a nonce does—and what “one-time” means

The word nonce is commonly expanded as “number used once.” In security protocols, the important idea is that a value helps distinguish a particular message, operation, or record from others. The exact uniqueness requirement depends on the protocol: it may apply within a session, for a given key, or to requests with a particular combination of credentials and timestamp. It does not necessarily mean the value is secret or unique everywhere.

RFC 5849, the OAuth 1.0 specification, gives a replay-focused definition: “A nonce is a random string, uniquely generated by the client to allow the server to verify that a request has never been made before and helps prevent replay attacks when requests are made over a non-secure channel.” That definition describes its OAuth context, not every value called a nonce.

A nonce alone does not stop replay. The receiver must enforce the relevant protocol rules—for example, by remembering previously used values, checking the value against a session, or rejecting a record with invalid sequence state.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

How the nonce differs across CSRF, TLS 1.3, and Bitcoin

Context What the value is for How it is generated or checked What “one-time” means here
CSRF protection Help a server tell a legitimate state-changing request from a forged cross-site request. Application software generates a token; the backend validates it against the relevant request context or user session. The token must be valid for the intended context; whether it is per-request or per-session depends on the design.
TLS 1.3 record protection Supply each encrypted record’s AEAD protection with a nonce tied to the connection’s traffic-key state. Each endpoint derives it from the record sequence number and the connection’s static write IV. Sequence state advances for each record under a key; the sequence counter must not wrap under that key.
Bitcoin proof-of-work Give miners a block-header field they can vary while searching for a hash that meets the consensus target. Miners try candidate header values and check the resulting hash against the target. It is a search input, not an authentication value that a receiver checks for one-time use.

How a CSRF token helps validate a request

Cross-site request forgery (CSRF) exploits a browser’s ability to send a request with a user’s existing credentials, such as a session cookie. A CSRF token gives the application an additional value to require on a state-changing request. The backend must validate that value in the context of the request or session; merely placing a token in a page or cookie does not provide protection if the server does not check it correctly.

Choose a token pattern that fits the application

  • Stateful applications: OWASP recommends the synchronizer token pattern. The server creates a token and checks the submitted value on the backend.
  • Stateless applications: OWASP discusses the double-submit cookie pattern. Its stronger form explicitly binds the submitted token to session-specific data.
  • Framework support unavailable: Add CSRF tokens to state-changing requests and validate them on the backend, following OWASP’s guidance.

A per-request token can narrow the period in which a captured token remains useful, but it can interfere with browser back-navigation. A per-session token can remain usable throughout the session. The appropriate choice depends on the application’s request flow and threat model.

CSRF tokens are not a substitute for preventing cross-site scripting (XSS). OWASP warns that XSS can defeat CSRF mitigations, so token checks need to sit alongside defenses against script injection.

What is a nonce in TLS 1.3?

TLS 1.3 uses random and nonce values for different jobs. The ClientHello contains a random value used in the handshake. Encrypted records, by contrast, use a per-record AEAD nonce derived from connection state; TLS 1.3 does not send a fresh random nonce with every encrypted record.

How the record nonce is formed

Under RFC 8446, each direction maintains its own record sequence number. It starts at zero for each key and advances for each record. To form the nonce, the endpoint encodes the 64-bit sequence number in network byte order, pads it to the AEAD algorithm’s required nonce length, and XORs it with the client or server write IV for that connection.

The sequence number is not allowed to wrap while the key is in use: the implementation must rekey or terminate the connection before that happens. Both endpoints derive record nonces from the relevant traffic-key state rather than relying on a newly transmitted random value for each record.

What is a nonce in Bitcoin mining?

Bitcoin miners search for a block header whose hash meets the network’s consensus target. The block header includes a nonce field that can be changed to produce another candidate hash without waiting for new transactions. Bitcoin’s developer guide describes the header as 80 bytes.

The nonce is one way to vary a candidate; miners can also change other header-related fields. Here, it is a proof-of-work search input—not a CSRF-style token, a secret, or a value that a server tracks to reject a repeated request.

What makes a nonce secure or useful?

The label “nonce” does not establish a security guarantee by itself. The protocol’s design and implementation determine whether the value must be unpredictable, merely distinct within a defined scope, bound to a session, or derived from shared state. A receiver also needs the right checks: tracking used request values, validating a token against its context, or maintaining record sequence state.

  • Scope: Know which messages, users, sessions, keys, or operations must have distinct values.
  • Binding: Tie the value to the relevant request, session, transaction, or connection state when the protocol requires it.
  • Validation: Enforce the protocol’s rules at the receiving end; generating a value without checking it is not enough.
  • Correct reuse rules: Do not assume every nonce must be secret or globally unique. Follow the specific protocol’s requirements.
