SeConv is Subtitle Edit’s headless command-line converter. You can call it from a Windows .bat file to convert subtitle formats, extract a track, or save machine-readable results. The examples below adapt commands from the project’s SeConv command-line reference; they are documented command forms, not recipes validated in a Windows test run. Check the installed build’s help and runtime requirements before relying on an option.
Before you put SeConv in a BAT file
The basic command form is seconv <pattern> <format> [options]. You can also supply the destination format with --format. The reference accepts options as --option:value, --option=value, or --option value; examples here use the colon form.
- Make sure
seconv.exeis available from the batch file’s current directory or onPATH. Otherwise, use its full path in each command. - Quote paths that contain spaces. SeConv also accepts multiple patterns as separate quoted arguments or as comma-separated patterns.
- Output normally goes beside the input file. Use
--output-folderto choose another destination. - Without
--overwrite, an existing output is given a suffixed name, such as_2or_3. Include the option only when replacement is intended. - Unknown options are errors, not silently ignored. The reference says SeConv exits with code 1 and suggests a closest matching option.
Because the documentation follows the project’s moving main branch rather than a pinned release, check seconv --help, seconv --help-json, and seconv --version against the installed build if behavior or option availability matters.
Convert subtitle files in a batch
Convert SRT files to WebVTT
This example converts matching SRT files and replaces same-named outputs if present:

echo Conversion completed.The documented CLI example uses seconv *.srt webvtt. Wildcard handling can vary with shell and build, so confirm how the installed version treats the quoted pattern.
Convert an input folder to a separate output folder
Use the folder options when you want to keep converted ASSA files separate from the source files:

if errorlevel 1 exit /b 1Here, --input-folder and --output-folder identify the source and destination directories, while --overwrite allows existing outputs to be replaced.

Extract one subtitle track from an MKV
Set the track number to the subtitle stream you want to extract. The command below requests track 3 and writes it as SubRip:

if errorlevel 1 exit /b 1The track number is an explicit selection, so confirm it corresponds to the intended subtitle stream in the source file. The command reference documents MKV-to-SRT extraction with --track-number.
Save conversion results as JSON
Add --json when another script needs machine-readable output. The reference says conversion commands emit one JSON document on success or failure; redirect standard output to a file as shown:

if errorlevel 1 exit /b 1The documented exit-code contract is 0 when all matched files convert successfully and 1 for an error, including invalid usage, unmatched input, parse errors, a missing OCR engine, or a failed conversion. In a BAT file, if errorlevel 1 branches on failure. The JSON output can provide details, while the exit code lets the calling script decide whether to continue.
Other documented SeConv workflows
The command reference also describes workflows beyond basic format conversion:
- Blu-Ray SUP OCR: OCR can use Tesseract and a selected language, with options to remove hearing-impaired text or split long lines. OCR engine and language-data availability depend on setup.
- Timing changes: options include frame-rate conversion and time offsets.
- Text cleanup: rules-based cleanup can use
--fix-common-errors, selected rules, and multiple-replace files. - Discovery and validation: subcommands include
formats,list-encodings,list-ocr-engines,info, andlint. The reference documents JSON modes for machine-readable results.
Subtitle Edit’s command-line reference describes support for “380+ subtitle formats.” This is the project’s documentation claim, not a guarantee that every format is available in every installed build.

Windows batch files and SeConv requirements
The SeConv README describes support for Windows, Linux, and macOS and lists the .NET 10 runtime requirement. That requirement may change between releases, so confirm it for the specific build you install. BAT syntax is specific to Windows; Linux and macOS workflows need an appropriate shell script or runner instead.
The project distributes prebuilt binaries alongside Subtitle Edit and documents dotnet build for building from source. SeConv is designed to run without the desktop GUI, which makes it suitable for headless scripts and bulk conversion. These instructions refer to current SeConv, not the separate older subtitleedit-cli project, whose runtime and feature set differ.
