A second router or mesh unit can leave you with poor Wi-Fi if it sits where the signal from the main unit is already weak. Put a wireless mesh point partway toward the area that needs coverage—not in the dead zone—and check its connection using the system’s app or mesh test. Placement advice differs for a compatible mesh node and a separately configured router or access point, so identify which kind of device you added before changing settings.
Why adding a second unit can make Wi-Fi feel worse
A wireless mesh point depends on its connection back to the main router or another mesh node. If you place it in a room where that connection is poor, it may have little useful signal to extend. Walls, cabinets, metal objects, and other obstructions can weaken the link; nearby devices can also crowd Wi-Fi radio space. NETGEAR describes these factors in its Wi-Fi performance guidance.
The second device’s role matters. A compatible mesh node is managed as part of a mesh system. A standalone router or access point may use a separate network and its own configuration. The title alone does not establish which one you have, and the setup steps are not interchangeable.

- Compatible mesh node: It joins a specific mesh system and is typically managed through that system’s app. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility and placement guidance.
- Standalone router or access point: It needs its own setup instructions. Depending on the configuration, it may create a separate Wi-Fi network rather than extend the existing one. Linksys discusses mesh as an option for home coverage across multiple routers in its router-placement guidance.
- Range extender: It is a different category of device; use its own setup and placement directions rather than assuming mesh instructions apply.
For example, Motorola describes using a MoCA connection between a primary router and a second router or access point. In a setup with separate networks, users may need to select the second device’s network when moving between them. That example is not a general instruction for mesh systems; see Motorola’s MoCA guidance.

- Wi-Fi 6 Mesh Wi-Fi - Next-gen Wi-Fi 6 AX3000 whole home mesh system to eliminate weak Wi-Fi for good(2×2/HE160 2402 Mbps plus 2×2 574 Mbps)
- Whole Home WiFi Coverage - Covers up to 6500 square feet with seamless high-performance Wi-Fi 6 and eliminate dead zones and buffering. Better than traditional WiFi booster and Range Extenders
- Connect More Devices - Deco X55(3-pack) is strong enough to connect up to 150 devices with strong and reliable Wi-Fi
- Our Cybersecurity Commitment - TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement
- More Gigabit Ports - Each Deco X55 has 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports(6 in total for a 2-pack) and supports Wired Ethernet Backhaul for better speeds. Any of them can work as a Wi-Fi Router
Place a wireless mesh point where it can still receive a strong signal
- Start from the main router. If practical, put it in a central, open location rather than inside a cabinet or behind several walls. TP-Link’s router placement guidance recommends an open position near the center of a room and away from cabinets, multiple walls, metal objects, and high-powered appliances. The best location still depends on the home and equipment.
- Move the mesh point toward the weak area, but stop short of the dead zone. Place it partway between the main router and the area that needs coverage. Google recommends this approach in its Wifi device placement guidance; its spacing advice is specific to Google Wifi devices, not a universal distance rule.
- Check the connection between units. Use the mesh system’s app or connection test after repositioning. TP-Link advises checking the satellite’s signal from the source unit in its Deco placement guide. A room can have weak coverage even when the node is physically close to the area you want to serve, if the path back to the main unit is poor.
- Change one placement at a time. Keep the point in the open and away from walls, metal objects, and possible interference sources. Run the connection test after each move so you can tell which location helped.
Reduce obstructions and consider a wired link
Walls and objects reduce signal strength, and metal cabinets can block Wi-Fi. NETGEAR also notes that multiple devices can crowd the 2.4 GHz radio space. If relocating the main router or node does not produce a strong link, check whether your equipment and home wiring support Ethernet backhaul. TP-Link says Ethernet backhaul is more stable and faster than wireless backhaul for its Deco units; that is system-specific guidance, not a guarantee for every installation.
For router placement, TP-Link’s UK guidance gives approximately 1 to 1.5 feet as an example recommendation. Its Australia Deco guide describes 1 to 1.5 feet as ideal for its satellite units. These are manufacturer-specific recommendations, not a universal spacing requirement for every router or mesh system.

- A New Way to WiFi: Deco Mesh technology gives you a better WiFi experience in all directions with faster WiFi speeds and strong WiFi signal to cover your whole home.
- Better Coverage than traditional WiFi routers: Deco S4 three units work seamlessly to create a WiFi mesh network that can cover homes up to 5, 500 square feet. No dead zone anymore.
- Seamless and Stable WiFi Mesh: Rather than wifi range extender that need multiple network names and passwords, Deco S4 allows you to enjoy seamless roaming throughout the house, with a single network name and password.
- Incredibly fast 3× 3 6 Stream AC1900 speeds makes the deco capable of providing connectivity for up to 100 devices.
- With advanced Deco Mesh Technology, units work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds.
If the second device is a separate router or access point
Do not apply mesh-node placement or app instructions automatically. Follow the second device’s own setup guide and confirm whether it is configured as an access point, a router, or another supported mode. Linksys notes that an unused nearby router’s Wi-Fi can be disabled or put on another channel, but that is not a universal configuration recipe. Avoid changing channels or disabling radios until you have identified the device’s role and checked its manufacturer’s instructions.
When choosing or troubleshooting a setup, the relevant factors are compatibility with the existing system, whether the connection between units is wired or wireless, the quality of that link, obstacles, and the home’s layout and wiring.
