Before adding personal accounts to a second-hand phone, make sure it is no longer linked to the previous owner, factory-reset it, and set it up with your own account. Then secure the screen, install updates, enable remote lost-device controls, and review privacy settings. If the exact model no longer receives security updates, that is a significant security limitation.
What should I do first with a second-hand phone?
Follow this order so you do not put personal information on a device you cannot fully activate or secure:
- Confirm the previous owner has released the phone. During setup, stop if it asks for the previous owner’s account credentials or remains linked to their account. Ask the seller to complete the supported account-removal process before you sign in. Do not guess credentials or use bypass tools. Google explains that Android device protection can require the screen lock or a previously synced Google Account after a reset (Google Android Help); Apple’s supported erase and release process is described in its iPhone erase guidance. A lock alone does not establish that a phone was stolen, but it does mean the seller must resolve activation before you can safely proceed.
- Factory-reset the phone. Once ownership and activation are clear, use the manufacturer’s supported reset flow to remove the prior user’s data. The UK National Cyber Security Centre recommends factory-resetting a second-hand device (NCSC Android device guidance). Make sure you have permission to erase it. On iPhone, Apple’s erase flow may also include removing the eSIM profile, so check the choices shown before confirming.
- Set it up as your device. Sign in with your own account only after the reset and activation check. Confirm you can finish setup without the previous owner’s credentials.
Which settings should I change on a used iPhone or Android?
Set a strong screen lock
Choose a passcode or PIN that is difficult to guess; the Federal Trade Commission recommends at least six digits (FTC device-security guidance). Fingerprint or face unlock can make routine access easier, but retain a strong fallback code.

Install updates and enable automatic updates
Install available operating-system and app updates before relying on the phone, then enable automatic updates where available. The FTC recommends automatic operating-system updates and timely app updates; the FBI likewise recommends timely updates and automatic updates where supported (FBI guidance). Menu names differ by model and software version.

Turn on the lost-device service
Enable the platform feature that lets you locate, lock, or erase the phone remotely, and verify that you are signed in to the account needed to use it. On Android, Google says Find Hub can locate, secure, or erase a device when configured. Android theft-protection options vary: for example, Identity Check is available only on certain devices, and manufacturer menus may differ.
Hide sensitive lock-screen notifications
Set the lock screen to hide sensitive notification content when the phone is locked. A notification can reveal information to someone holding the device; Google warns that lock-screen details may help an unauthorized person access data.

Set a SIM PIN where supported
A SIM PIN can help prevent someone from moving your SIM into another device to use your phone number. Replace any publicly known carrier default with a private PIN, but check with your carrier first if you do not know the current PIN: repeated wrong entries can lock the SIM. Remove apps you do not recognize or need, and review app permissions and network-sharing settings. The FBI recommends periodically reviewing applications and sharing settings. Permission categories and their locations vary between operating systems and versions.

Should I factory-reset a used phone?
Yes. A factory reset removes prior user data and gives you a clean starting point; both the NCSC and FTC recommend resetting a second-hand device before use. Use the phone maker’s supported settings flow rather than relying on the seller’s assurances that the phone has already been cleared. A reset does not by itself remove every activation or account lock, so confirm the phone can be set up with your own account afterward.

Watch for setup screens that request the previous owner’s credentials, or any message indicating the device is still associated with another account. Stop there and ask the seller to remove the device through the platform’s supported process. Do not enter your own account details until the phone activates cleanly. Android device protection may request a previously synced Google Account after a reset; Apple also provides an account and device-release process for erased iPhones.

How can I check whether the phone still gets security updates?
Look up the exact model and region on the manufacturer’s support information and confirm it remains eligible for security updates. The NCSC warns that unsupported devices no longer receive security updates and are easier to hack. Being able to install apps does not mean a phone still receives platform security fixes, and settings cannot compensate for updates that have ended.
What should I compare when choosing between two used phones?
Assess both phones against the same practical checks rather than relying on age or appearance alone:
- Does the exact model in your region still receive security updates?
- Has the previous owner cleared its activation or account lock?
- Does it support the security and lost-device features you need?
- Can it be reset and activated cleanly with your own account?
On Android, feature availability and menu paths vary by manufacturer and release. On iPhone, use Apple’s current setup and security controls; the Apple source cited here covers erasing and account/device release, not every post-setup security menu.
