The Seagate Storage Expansion Card is a good fit if you want more space on an Xbox Series X|S and need to play Series X|S-optimized games directly from that added storage. Its key drawbacks are that it is made for those consoles, not general-purpose storage, and can cost more than a USB drive. A USB drive can archive optimized games, but you must move them to the console’s internal storage or an expansion card to play them.
What the Seagate Xbox expansion card does
The card plugs into the dedicated expansion slot on an Xbox Series X or Series S. Seagate says it is recognized by the console without additional setup or formatting. It adds storage that can run Series X|S-optimized games directly, rather than serving only as a place to keep games until you transfer them elsewhere.
Xbox says the card maintains the internal SSD’s peak speed and performance. That is the manufacturer’s performance claim, not an independent card-versus-console test. Xbox’s 2020 technical explanation describes the Series X|S custom internal SSD as delivering 2.4 GB/s raw I/O throughput; it also says the Xbox Velocity Architecture’s custom SSD throughput is more than 40 times that of Xbox One. Those figures describe Xbox’s architecture, not a separate measurement of this card. Xbox Wire’s technical primer explains the design.
Pros of the Seagate Storage Expansion Card
Play optimized games without transferring them first
The main practical advantage is direct play: Series X|S-optimized games can run from the card. That makes it more convenient than USB storage if you regularly switch among large, optimized games and do not want to move them back and forth. Seagate’s product page describes the card and its use.

Simple installation and console-to-console portability
Insert the card into the expansion slot and the console recognizes it, according to Seagate. You can move it to another Xbox Series X|S console. Moving the storage does not transfer ownership of a game: access still depends on the applicable disc or account license.

Xbox’s product page lists 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB versions. Availability can vary by region, so confirm that the capacity you want is offered where you buy. Xbox’s product listing shows the current capacity options.

Cons and limitations
It is for Xbox Series X|S, not a general-purpose drive
Seagate says the card does not work with Xbox One or PC. If you want storage that can also serve a computer or older Xbox, a USB drive is more flexible.

A USB hard drive or SSD can store Series X|S-optimized games, but those games must be moved to the internal SSD or an expansion card before they can be played. USB storage is still useful for playing legacy games and keeping optimized titles installed for later. The Seagate card’s advantage is direct play; USB’s advantage is its broader utility and potential for lower cost. Check current prices for the capacity you need rather than assuming one option is always cheaper.
