Sea cucumbers and sea urchins are both echinoderms, but they occupy very different ecological niches. A typical sea cucumber has a soft, leathery body and collects organic particles from sediment, whereas a typical sea urchin has a rigid, plated body with movable spines and grazes algae from hard surfaces. Those are broad patterns rather than rules for every species.

The distinction matters because each animal changes its habitat in a different way: sea cucumbers process and aerate seafloor sediment, while sea urchins regulate algal growth. The effects of either animal depend on its species, abundance, predators, food supply and surrounding habitat.

What is the difference between a sea cucumber and a sea urchin?

Both animals belong to phylum Echinodermata and share the echinoderm water-vascular system, tube feet and a body plan organized around a central axis. Their closer classifications separate them: sea cucumbers are in class Holothuroidea, while sea urchins are in class Echinoidea.

Feature Sea cucumbers Sea urchins
Body form Usually soft and leathery, with a flexible, elongated body Usually rounded or flattened, with a hard test and projecting spines
Internal skeleton Many small, separate skeletal pieces called ossicles embedded in the body wall Fused skeletal plates form a rigid test
Typical feeding mode Deposit feeding or scavenging; particles are collected with tube feet around the mouth Algal grazing with Aristotle’s lantern, a jaw apparatus
Typical habitat Seafloor habitats from shallow water to the deep ocean; a few species swim in the water column Benthic rocky, reef and other habitats where food and shelter are available
Major ecosystem action Redistributes, mixes and can oxygenate sediment while processing organic matter Removes algae; at suitable densities this can maintain open space, while excessive grazing can alter kelp or reef habitat

NOAA’s Ocean Service counts more than 1,000 described sea cucumber species worldwide. Smithsonian Ocean notes that echinoderms as a whole occur in every ocean, including Antarctica, and at depths exceeding 5,000 meters; that broad figure should not be treated as the range of every sea cucumber or sea urchin species.

How their bodies differ

Sea cucumber anatomy

A sea cucumber’s body is flexible because most of its skeletal material is reduced to tiny ossicles that remain separate inside the body wall. The result is the familiar soft, cucumber-like appearance described by NOAA: leathery skin rather than a rigid shell. Tube feet are concentrated around the mouth, where they help gather food, and additional tube feet may assist with movement or attachment.

The absence of a solid external test does not mean a cucumber has no skeleton. The ossicles provide support, and their shape varies among species. Some unusual cucumbers have adaptations for swimming or suspension in the water column, so a crawling, sausage-shaped animal on mud is a useful visual starting point, not a universal description.

Sea urchin anatomy

In a sea urchin, skeletal plates are fused into a test. Rows of articulated spines project from that test and can move, protect the animal and help it maneuver over the bottom. The test may be globular, flattened or otherwise specialized among species, but it remains substantially more rigid than a cucumber’s body wall.

Most sea urchins also have Aristotle’s lantern, a complex set of jaws and supporting muscles on the underside. It works like a scraping and biting tool, allowing an urchin to remove algae from rock or consume tissue. Spines and the hard test make an urchin recognizable even when it is not feeding.

What do sea cucumbers and sea urchins eat?

Sea cucumber feeding

Many sea cucumbers are deposit feeders. They move across or rest on the seafloor, extend the tube feet surrounding the mouth and collect sediment particles coated with organic material. Depending on the species and conditions, the material can include tiny algal fragments, bacteria, decomposing matter and microscopic marine organisms. NOAA describes many species as scavengers that gather small algal particles or microscopic animals from the bottom.

After swallowing sediment, a cucumber extracts usable organic compounds and passes the remaining material through its digestive tract. NOAA Ocean Exploration describes deep-sea forms consuming nutrients attached to sediment and expelling undigested mud. Microbes, including bacteria, help break down consumed particles, linking cucumber feeding to nutrient cycling.

“Deposit feeder” is not synonymous with “eats only mud.” The nutritional value comes from the organic coating and organisms associated with the sediment. Other sea cucumbers may filter particles from the water, scavenge animal material or specialize in food available in their particular habitat.

Sea urchin feeding

Most sea urchins are herbivores that graze algae from rock, reef surfaces or other hard substrates. Aristotle’s lantern scrapes the surface and bites off growth. In a kelp forest, this makes urchins important consumers of algae; on a coral reef, grazing can prevent fleshy algae from occupying space where corals or other organisms might settle.

Smithsonian Ocean notes important exceptions. Some urchins are omnivorous, and some deep-sea species prey on corals, crinoids or other animals. Therefore, “sea urchins eat kelp” is a useful example of a common feeding pattern, not a species-wide rule. Food choice changes with species, depth, available habitat and the balance of plants and animals around the urchin.

Where do sea cucumbers live?

Sea cucumbers are marine animals found throughout ocean basins, from shallow coastal flats to deep seafloor environments. NOAA reports that they are particularly plentiful in the deep ocean. Species occupy sand, mud, rubble, rock and reef habitats, with body shape and feeding structures matched to local conditions.

Deep-sea examples

During NOAA’s Seascape Alaska 3 expedition, the sea cucumber Pannychia sp. was observed at 2,320 meters (7,610 feet) near the beginning of Dive 02 in the Aleutians. That measurement is one documented observation, not a typical depth for all sea cucumbers. It illustrates how far below the surface sediment-processing cucumbers can occur.

Swimming and pelagic exceptions

Most familiar sea cucumbers crawl on or in the sediment, but NOAA Ocean Exploration also documents swimming and pelagic forms. These species can leave the bottom and move through the water column, often using specialized body shapes or muscular movements. Consequently, “bottom-dwelling” describes the majority more reliably than every species.

Where do sea urchins live?

Sea urchins are benthic animals, meaning they live on the seafloor or attached to its surfaces. Their habitats include rocky shores, kelp forests, coral reefs and other places where algae, shelter and suitable attachment surfaces occur. There is no single urchin depth or substrate: one species may occupy shallow surge channels while another lives in deep water.

The broad echinoderm record extends below 5,000 meters, according to Smithsonian Ocean, but that is a phylum-level statement. It should not be used to claim that every sea urchin reaches that depth. Local temperature, food, predators and the availability of hard surfaces determine where an individual species can persist.

How each animal changes its ecosystem

Sea cucumbers as sediment processors

By ingesting and reworking surface sediment, sea cucumbers redistribute organic material and disturb compacted layers. Their feeding and movement can help bring oxygen into sediment, allowing chemical and microbial processes to continue below the surface. Smithsonian Ocean describes this activity as removing organic buildup and returning oxygen to the system; NOAA’s Alaska expedition account likewise emphasizes redistribution and aeration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That work can benefit organisms living in or on the bottom, but its magnitude depends on cucumber abundance, sediment type and the species’ feeding rate. In shallow water, Smithsonian also identifies sea cucumbers as contributors to calcium-carbonate cycling. These services are ecological functions, not a guarantee that every cucumber improves every site under every condition.

Sea urchins as algal grazers

Grazing by sea urchins can keep algae from monopolizing surfaces. In a healthy kelp forest, this may help maintain space where kelp recruits can establish. On coral reefs, grazing can limit algal overgrowth that would otherwise compete with corals. Dr. Kristen Elsmore of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Marine Region summarized the broader principle: “Herbivores help maintain balance and ecosystem functioning across coastal ecosystems, particularly those dominated by vegetation, such as kelp forests.”

The same grazer can have a different effect when its density becomes too high or when predators disappear. Intense urchin grazing can remove newly growing kelp and contribute to urchin barrens. On reefs, persistent scraping may reduce algae but can also damage corals or erode the carbonate framework when food is scarce and urchins continue feeding.

Predators and food webs determine the outcome

Sea otters and other predators can suppress urchin numbers in some kelp ecosystems. If predator populations fall, urchins may increase and overgraze kelp. Conversely, removing too many urchins can allow algae to spread. The ecological result is therefore a food-web outcome rather than a simple label of “helpful” or “harmful.”

What happened to Caribbean long-spined urchins?

The long-spined urchin Diadema antillarum shows why density and local history matter. NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries reports that a disease event in 1982–1983 caused losses of roughly 95–99% in most Caribbean locations. With fewer urchins grazing, algae expanded in many places. Other herbivores provided some grazing, but NOAA notes that they did not fully replace Diadema’s role everywhere.

Historical Caribbean reef densities were roughly one to two Diadema per square meter. That figure is context for how abundant the species once was, not a universal restoration target for every reef.

Restoration needs a suitable density

In a Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary restoration project described by NOAA on June 25, 2026, 101 urchins were released at Horseshoe Reef. The account reported an early retention rate of 42%. This is an initial, local result rather than a general survival rate for the species or a prediction for other reefs.

Dr. Andy Bruckner, research coordinator for the sanctuary, explained the management problem: “We’re testing what density of urchins is enough to control algae effectively, but not so much that they start harming corals or bioeroding the reef framework.” The aim is ecological balance, not simply maximizing the number of urchins.

Which one is softer?

Sea cucumbers are generally soft and leathery because their ossicles are small and separate. Sea urchins have a rigid test made from fused plates, plus articulated spines.

Which one eats algae?

Many or most sea urchins graze algae with Aristotle’s lantern. Some are omnivores or predators, so the statement does not apply to every urchin. Sea cucumbers more commonly collect organic particles from sediment or scavenge, although their diets also vary.

Which one lives in mud?

Deposit-feeding sea cucumbers commonly occupy mud or sand because those substrates contain the particles they process. Sea urchins are often associated with rock, kelp holdfasts or reefs, but species occur across a wider range of benthic habitats.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which one changes oxygen conditions in sediment?

Sea cucumbers are the stronger example. Their ingestion and reworking of sediment can redistribute particles and promote aeration. Sea urchins primarily change the availability of algae and open surface space rather than processing soft sediment.

How to identify one in the field or in an image

  1. Look for a rigid test and spines. A rounded or flattened hard body covered in movable spines indicates a sea urchin.
  2. Look for a flexible, elongated body. A leathery, cucumber-like animal without projecting spines is likely a sea cucumber.
  3. Check the immediate substrate. An animal scraping algae from rock or reef is consistent with a grazing urchin; an animal collecting material from sand or mud is consistent with a deposit-feeding cucumber.
  4. Treat behavior as supporting evidence. Body form is more reliable than a single feeding observation because species can be omnivorous, predatory, swimming or otherwise specialized.

Common misconceptions and the correct qualification

  • “All sea cucumbers live in deep mud.” They range from shallow water to great depths, and some swim in the water column.
  • “All sea urchins eat kelp.” Many graze algae, but some are omnivorous and some deep-sea species prey on animals such as corals and crinoids.
  • “Urchins are bad for reefs.” Moderate grazing can restrain algae; excessive grazing can damage corals or shift habitat. The outcome depends on density and food-web conditions.
  • “More urchins always improve restoration.” Restoration projects test a density that controls algae without causing collateral damage.
  • “A sea cucumber is a plant or vegetable.” NOAA’s Ocean Service identifies it as an animal and an echinoderm, not a vegetable.
  • “A deep observation describes the whole group.” The 2,320-meter Pannychia observation demonstrates one cucumber’s range, not the normal depth of every species.

Bottom line

Sea cucumbers and sea urchins are related echinoderms with opposite-looking body plans and different main jobs. Sea cucumbers generally collect and digest organic particles in sediment, helping mix and aerate the seafloor. Sea urchins generally scrape algae from hard surfaces, helping determine whether kelp, coral and other organisms have room to grow. Neither role is universally beneficial or damaging: species, habitat, predators and population density decide the result.
