With normal use, an SD card typically lasts 10 years or more, according to the SD Association. That is a general estimate, not a guarantee for every card: manufacturing, recording workload, and use conditions affect service life.
What the 10-year estimate means
The SD Association’s consumer FAQ says current technology and normal usage typically give an SD card a lifespan of 10 years or more. The FAQ does not display a publication date; the statement is available on its consumer FAQ, accessed in 2026. Treat the figure as a typical-use estimate, not a promised minimum or a date when a card will necessarily fail.
There is no single guaranteed lifespan for every SD card. The SD Association says service life varies with how a card is manufactured. The estimate also does not establish how long a particular card will last under continuous recording or other unusually heavy write workloads.

Occasional photos and file storage
For occasional photos, transfers, or other ordinary use, the Association’s typical-use estimate is the relevant broad guide. It is not a substitute for the specifications of the exact card, and it does not promise that any individual card will reach ten years.

Frequent or continuous video recording
Repeated recording is a different workload from occasional storage. SanDisk describes its endurance products as designed for recording video for long periods. If a camera, dash camera, or other device writes frequently, look for an endurance designation and model-specific specifications rather than assuming an ordinary card has the same endurance. Check the device’s compatibility requirements before choosing a card.
What endurance ratings and warranties can—and cannot—tell you
Endurance numbers are meaningful only for the specific model and conditions to which they apply. For example, Kingston’s industrial SD card datasheet lists up to 1920 TBW and 30,000 P/E cycles, as well as wear-levelling and bad-block management. Those figures describe that industrial model; they are not an average lifespan or a rating to apply to consumer SD cards generally. See Kingston’s industrial SD card datasheet.

Warranty terms are also product-specific. SanDisk lists different warranty periods for particular endurance-card models and capacities on its endurance-card support page. A warranty describes the manufacturer’s coverage terms, not a measured service life or a guarantee that the card will last for the full warranty period—or fail when that period ends.

- Match the write workload. For occasional photos and files, consider ordinary use; for frequent or long-duration video recording, look for an endurance product designed for that workload.
- Check the exact model’s specifications. Use the manufacturer’s claims for that card, not an endurance figure from a different product or category.
- Confirm capacity and device compatibility. Make sure the card works with the camera or other device and provides the capacity you need.
- Read the current warranty for the exact model and capacity. Use its terms to understand coverage, not as a prediction of service life.
Protect files rather than relying on a lifespan estimate
No general lifespan estimate can guarantee that a card will remain readable until a particular date. Keep another copy of important photos and files on a separate storage device or backup service. An SD card is convenient removable storage, but it should not be the only copy of irreplaceable data.
