An SD card can add removable storage to a phone only when that exact model has a compatible card slot. Before buying, check the phone’s supported card type and maximum capacity. Then decide whether you need portable space for files or, on devices that support it, internal storage for apps as well. Formatting erases the card, so back up its contents before setup or troubleshooting.

Can your phone use an SD card?

Not every phone has a microSD slot, and capacity limits vary by model—even within the same manufacturer’s range. Check the specifications or support page for your exact phone model before shopping. For Galaxy devices, Samsung’s microSD compatibility guide and UK SD-card instructions explain that support and maximum capacity depend on the device.

Samsung describes three card families: microSD, up to 2GB; microSDHC, over 2GB and up to 32GB; and microSDXC, over 32GB and up to 2TB. These are format capacity ranges, not a promise that a particular phone accepts every card in a family. Confirm the phone’s limit before choosing a capacity.

Portable storage or internal storage?

Android’s setup flow can offer portable storage or internal storage. The choice affects what the card can hold and how easily you can move it later. Google outlines both modes in Get started with an SD card.

Mode What it is for Moving the card
Portable storage Files such as photos and videos; Android’s guidance says it cannot be used to install apps. Can be transferred between devices.
Internal storage Files and apps on devices that support this setup. Not transferable between devices in the same way as portable storage.

Setting up or switching storage modes involves formatting, which permanently deletes the card’s existing data. Android menu availability and manufacturer behavior can differ. Samsung says its Android devices do not support adoptable storage, so Galaxy owners should treat the card as removable storage for files and media rather than expect an internal-storage option.

How to choose a card for your phone

  1. Verify compatibility. Find the exact phone model’s supported card type and maximum capacity in its specifications or manufacturer support page.
  2. Estimate the space you need. Choose capacity based on the photos, videos, and other files you intend to keep on the card, while staying within the phone’s limit.
  3. Match speed to the task. Check the phone’s requirements and the card’s current specifications, particularly if you record high-resolution video or expect to run apps from the card on a device that supports internal storage.
  4. Choose the storage mode deliberately. Portable storage is suited to transferable files. Internal/adoptable storage is available only on devices that support it and makes the card less portable.

Samsung recommends microSDXC for high-resolution video recording, but compatibility with the particular phone still matters. Speed labels describe classifications, not guaranteed results on every device. For example, a Samsung Newsroom announcement describes A2 application-performance class on specified Samsung cards at 128GB and higher, and V30 video speed class on the cards discussed in that announcement. Those product-specific specifications do not establish that every card with those labels will improve app performance or satisfy every phone’s recording requirements. Check current card specifications and the phone’s requirements.

How to move files to a card

On Samsung phones, the manufacturer’s instructions use the My Files app to copy or move selected files to the card. The exact labels and steps can vary by model and software version.

  1. Insert a compatible card and open My Files.
  2. Select the files or folders you want to transfer.
  3. Choose the available copy or move action, then select the SD card as the destination and complete the transfer.

Copying leaves the originals in place; moving relocates them. Check that the transferred files are accessible from the card before deleting any separate backup. For other Android phones, use the file manager and instructions provided for that device.

Can you move apps to an SD card?

Only some Android devices and apps allow this. Samsung says many apps cannot be moved because their developers restrict card storage or because of performance considerations; preloaded apps may also be ineligible. In Samsung’s app settings process, if the Change option is absent, the app location cannot be changed through that method. A card therefore does not guarantee that you can install apps on it or free a predictable amount of internal storage.

How to format, troubleshoot, or remove a card safely

Back up before formatting

Formatting erases all data on the card. Copy files you want to keep to another location before formatting, whether you are setting up the card, changing its storage mode, or using formatting to address an error. Google’s Android setup guidance and Samsung’s Galaxy card guide warn that formatting deletes stored data.

If the phone reports a card problem

Samsung says formatting may resolve some SD-card errors. If warnings continue, the card may be damaged; back up any accessible files and replace the card if problems persist. Samsung also points to the SD Association’s Memory Card Formatter when a device cannot format the card. See Samsung’s SD-card troubleshooting steps for its guidance.

Unmount before physical removal

Where the phone provides an unmount control, use it in settings before removing the card. The location of the setting, tray, and card varies by device, so follow the instructions for the exact model. When opening a Galaxy tray, Samsung warns not to insert the SIM-eject tool into microphone or speaker holes; consult its device instructions for safe removal.
