The symbols on an SD card answer two different questions: how much sustained performance the card is guaranteed to deliver, and which bus interface connects it to the device. C2, C4, C6 and C10 are SD Speed Class marks; U1 and U3 are UHS Speed Class marks; and V6, V10, V30, V60 and V90 are Video Speed Class marks. By contrast, UHS-I, UHS-II and UHS-III identify bus-interface generations, not minimum write classes.

Choose a card by matching the camera or other host’s required class, supported interface, card format and capacity. A larger number is not automatically better, and an interface label alone does not prove that a card can sustain a particular video mode.

What an SD speed class actually guarantees

A speed class is an assured minimum for sequential card access under the conditions defined by the SD standard. It is not the card’s peak read speed, a guarantee for every file operation, or a promise that the card will always sustain the same rate in every host.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sequential writing is the important operation for continuous video capture. The camera is continually sending a stream of data to the card, so a card that briefly advertises a high transfer rate may still fail if its sustained write behavior does not meet the recording mode’s requirement. Host hardware, firmware, controller behavior, file system, temperature and the particular card can affect real-world results.

The SD Association summarizes the purpose of the markings this way: “All speed class types assures minimum sequential card access performance including multiple stream access (in SD Express Speed Classes) under defined conditions specified by the standard.” The grammar in that quotation is the Association’s wording; the practical meaning is that the class is a floor measured by a defined method, not a peak-speed advertisement.

The SD card speed-class markings at a glance

Marking family Symbols Named minimum performance What the marking tells you
SD Speed Class C2, C4, C6, C10 2, 4, 6 or 10 MB/s The older C-shaped class system.
UHS Speed Class U1, U3 10 or 30 MB/s A minimum-write class associated with UHS operating modes.
Video Speed Class V6, V10, V30, V60, V90 6, 10, 30, 60 or 90 MB/s A newer class family designed around modern video workloads.
SD Express Speed Class E150, E300, E450, E600 150, 300, 450 or 600 MB/s A separate class system for SD Express cards.

The number in each symbol corresponds to the named minimum megabytes-per-second figure for that class. The figure must be read with its class family: a 10 in a C, U or V mark does not make the three systems interchangeable.

Understanding each class family

SD Speed Class: C2 through C10

SD Speed Class is shown as a number inside a C-shaped symbol. C2 indicates 2 MB/s, C4 indicates 4 MB/s, C6 indicates 6 MB/s and C10 indicates 10 MB/s under the standard’s conditions. It is an older system, but C10 remains relevant because many devices specify it as a minimum requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The SD Association describes C10 as being used in High Speed mode or faster. That statement describes the relationship between the class and an operating mode; it does not mean that every C10 card reaches the same peak read speed or that C10 automatically satisfies a camera’s newer 4K requirement.

UHS Speed Class: U1 and U3

U1 and U3 are written inside a U-shaped symbol. U1 denotes a 10 MB/s minimum and U3 denotes a 30 MB/s minimum. These are speed classes, so they describe assured minimum performance rather than the bus generation.

The UHS class symbol is commonly found on cards designed for UHS operating modes. A device may require U1 or U3 for a particular recording mode, but the exact requirement belongs to the device maker’s manual. U3 is not a synonym for UHS-III, and UHS-II is not proof that a card carries a U3 rating.

Video Speed Class: V6 through V90

Video Speed Class uses a V followed by the minimum rate: V6 is 6 MB/s, V10 is 10 MB/s, V30 is 30 MB/s, V60 is 60 MB/s and V90 is 90 MB/s. The family was introduced in February 2016 to address newer video-capture requirements and flash technologies.

V markings are useful when a camera’s recording table names a Video Speed Class directly. They should not be treated as merely renamed U marks. The class systems use different access methods, and a card can satisfy one method without satisfying another at a similar nominal rate. For example, the SD Association gives an SDXC card that meets V30 requirements but only C10 under the older Speed Class method.

SD Express Speed Class: E150 through E600

E150, E300, E450 and E600 belong to the SD Express Speed Class family and indicate 150, 300, 450 and 600 MB/s respectively. They are separate from C, U and V markings. Do not infer that an E-class card automatically meets a camera’s C10, U3 or V30 requirement; use the host’s documented requirements and the card’s complete label.

UHS speed class versus UHS bus interface

Everyday card descriptions often use “UHS” for two unrelated label types. The U-shaped U1 or U3 is a speed-class symbol. The text UHS-I, UHS-II or UHS-III identifies the bus interface generation.

Bus interface SD Association maximum bus figure Interpretation
UHS-I 104 MB/s Interface capability, not a guaranteed card write rate.
UHS-II 324 MB/s Higher interface capability when both card and host support it.
UHS-III 624 MB/s Higher interface capability when both card and host support it.

Those figures describe the bus interface’s maximum capability. They do not promise that a particular card reaches the figure, that the device can use it, or that sustained video writing will meet a required class. The card and host must support the interface for its benefits to be available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The physical interface and the performance class answer different purchasing questions. A camera could support a fast UHS-II bus but still require a particular minimum class for a selected video mode. Conversely, a card with a high class mark may not deliver its potential if the host only supports a slower interface.

What the common video associations mean

The SD Association lists broad associations between classes and video workloads:

Broad application association Common class guidance
HD to Full HD Class 10, U1 or V10
Full HD to 4K U3 or V30
4K UHD to 8K V60
8K UHD V90

These are general mappings, not model-specific guarantees. A camera’s bitrate, codec, frame rate, color depth, number of streams and recording mode can change the required sustained rate. A camera that records 4K in one mode may require a different class for a higher-bitrate or higher-frame-rate mode.

Read the manual’s recording-mode table or the card warning shown in the camera. The exact requirement for a particular model cannot be established from resolution alone.

How to choose a card for a camera or other host

  1. Identify the exact recording mode. Note resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate, not just “4K” or “8K.” If the device lists a minimum class beside each mode, use that entry.
  2. Check the required class family. Follow a requirement such as C10, U3 or V60 exactly. A higher-looking number from another family is not a guaranteed substitute because the class protocols differ.
  3. Check the supported bus interface. Confirm whether the host supports UHS-I, UHS-II, UHS-III or an SD Express interface. A faster interface only helps when the host and card both support it.
  4. Confirm the card family, form factor and capacity. Verify whether the slot accepts full-size SD or microSD, and whether the manual specifies a card family or capacity limit. The class mark cannot override a format or capacity incompatibility.
  5. Allow sensible headroom. A card that exactly meets the documented minimum may be adequate. Extra class headroom can be useful for demanding modes or future devices, but it can add cost and may not improve performance in a host that cannot use it.
  6. Compare sustained class, not only advertised read speed. Read-speed figures are often the most prominent number on packaging, but continuous recording depends on sustained write performance and the required class.

A search such as SDXC UHS-I U3 V30 memory card is meaningful only after the host’s manual confirms those format, interface and class markings. It is a description of a card’s labels, not a universal recommendation.

How to read real-world labels

U3 plus UHS-I

This combination says the card carries a 30 MB/s UHS Speed Class minimum and uses the UHS-I bus interface. It does not say that the card writes at 104 MB/s, because 104 MB/s is the interface maximum, not the class guarantee.

V30 plus UHS-II

This card has a 30 MB/s Video Speed Class minimum and a UHS-II interface. The V30 mark is the relevant sustained-video floor; UHS-II describes the connection. A camera must support both the required V class and the interface to benefit from the combination.

C10 without a V mark

C10 indicates the 10 MB/s SD Speed Class minimum. It may satisfy a device that explicitly asks for C10, but it should not be assumed to satisfy a V10 or U1 requirement merely because all three show a nominal 10 MB/s figure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

V90

V90 indicates a 90 MB/s Video Speed Class minimum. It is associated broadly with 8K UHD workloads, yet the correct decision still depends on the camera’s own mode table and interface support. Buying V90 by default is unnecessary when the host specifies a lower class.

Why equal numbers do not make classes interchangeable

C10, U1 and V10 all carry a nominal 10 MB/s figure, but they are tested through different class methods. The class name is part of the technical requirement. Treating the number as the entire specification can lead to recording errors, dropped frames or a camera refusing to select a mode.

The same distinction applies to C30, U3 and V30 comparisons: U3 and V30 share a 30 MB/s figure, but neither symbol automatically certifies the other system’s method. When a manual names one class family, match that family unless the manufacturer explicitly lists an alternative.

Common questions and mistaken assumptions

Does V30 mean the card always writes at 30 MB/s?

No. V30 assures the stated minimum under the Video Speed Class conditions. It is not a promise for every operation, every host or the card’s peak read speed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does UHS-II mean U3?

No. UHS-II is a bus-interface label; U3 is a speed-class label. A card can have one without the other, so check both the card and the host requirement.

Should the highest number always be purchased?

No. Choose the minimum class required for the selected mode, then consider useful headroom. A host that cannot use a faster interface or mode may gain no practical benefit from a more expensive card.

Do I need a V90 SD card?

Only if the host’s recording mode requires V90 or a comparable documented performance level. The broad association with 8K UHD is guidance, not a universal rule; consult the exact camera manual.

Compatibility and failure troubleshooting

The camera rejects the card

  • Recheck the manual for the required class family, not just the number.
  • Confirm that the card’s SD, microSD, SDHC, SDXC or SD Express family matches the slot’s stated support.
  • Check the capacity limit and any required interface generation.
  • Make sure the card is genuine and correctly formatted according to the device maker’s instructions.

Recording stops or frames are dropped

  • Compare the selected mode’s bitrate and frame rate with the documented class requirement.
  • Do not rely on a peak read-speed number; verify the sustained-write class.
  • Try a card that meets the exact required V, U or C marking and the host’s supported interface.
  • If the problem occurs only after long recording, consider heat, card condition and host behavior; a class mark is not a guarantee for every environmental or operational condition.

Transfers are slower than the package suggests

Check whether the computer, reader and card all support the advertised interface. A UHS-II card connected through a UHS-I reader cannot use the higher bus capability, and the interface maximum remains different from the card’s guaranteed sustained write class.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Making a sensible cost and headroom decision

Start with the lowest class that the device explicitly requires for the modes you will use. Move to a higher class when the extra margin supports a documented higher-bitrate mode, a future host or a workflow that benefits from faster sustained transfers. Do not pay for an interface generation that the host cannot use.

For continuous recording, prioritize the minimum sustained-write marking and verified compatibility over a large peak read number. For ordinary still-photo storage or lower-bitrate capture, a lower class may be entirely appropriate if it meets the device’s specification.

A concise decision checklist

  • What exact mode will be recorded?
  • Which class family does the manual name: C, U or V?
  • What minimum number is specified?
  • Which bus interface does the host support?
  • Does the card’s form factor, family and capacity match the slot?
  • Is additional headroom worth its cost for this host and workflow?

Once those questions are answered, the symbols become a compatibility checklist rather than a race to buy the largest number. The class mark establishes the relevant minimum, while the UHS or SD Express label establishes how the card communicates with the host.
