SCTI’s New Zealand International Comprehensive Single Trip policy offers unlimited medical and evacuation cover, but that headline is subject to the policy’s conditions, exclusions and sublimits. Whether it fits depends on your eligibility, trip costs, health circumstances, activities and chosen excess. This review covers the policy wording effective 12 July 2025; check the terms issued for your own purchase.

Which SCTI policy does this review cover?

This is Southern Cross Travel Insurance’s New Zealand International Comprehensive Single Trip policy, not a review of its Australian products or annual multi-trip cover. The current wording covered here is effective 12 July 2025. It identifies Southern Cross Benefits Limited, trading as Southern Cross Travel Insurance, as the insurer. Your Certificate of Insurance, medical assessment and any endorsements form part of the terms relevant to your cover. See SCTI’s policy information.

Who is eligible?

The policy is intended for eligible New Zealand residents travelling overseas on a return journey for a holiday, to visit friends or family, or for non-manual work such as an office-based trip, conference or training course. Eligibility includes permanently living in New Zealand and qualifying for New Zealand public health and disability services. The policy also requires a return to New Zealand, and qualifying conditions must continue to be met during the policy period. Check the full eligibility criteria before relying on cover. What does the cover include?

Medical treatment and evacuation

The policy summary describes medical and evacuation cover as unlimited, subject to the wording, conditions, exclusions and applicable sublimits. “Unlimited” therefore does not mean every medical-related cost is automatically covered. The summary, for example, specifies a $100,000-per-person limit for claims related to terrorism, $2,000 per person for emergency dental treatment, and $50,000 per deceased person for funeral costs or return of mortal remains. Check the wording for definitions, eligibility and other restrictions. SCTI’s policy information.

Cancellation, trip interruption and changes

Pre-departure cancellation or change cover ranges from $2,500 to unlimited per person, depending on the cover selected. After departure, changes have a $50,000-per-person maximum, with lower limits for specified situations. These are maximums, not automatic payouts: the circumstances must meet the policy terms, and the selected cover must suit the costs you want insured. SCTI’s policy information.

Baggage, personal accident and liability

Baggage and personal items have a $25,000-per-person headline limit. Per-item caps, depreciation and other sublimits can reduce the amount payable for a particular loss, so check the limits for valuable items rather than assuming the headline figure applies to each one. The listed benefits also include baggage delay, personal accident and personal liability; consult the policy for their specific terms and limits. SCTI’s policy information.

Rental-vehicle excess and optional cover

Rental-vehicle excess is among the listed benefits. SCTI also lists optional moped or motorbike, skiing or snowboarding, and cruise cover. An activity or incident is not covered simply because an option exists: check the relevant wording and confirm that any required option is shown on your Certificate of Insurance. How does the excess work?

SCTI’s New Zealand product information lists excess choices of $0, $100 and $200, with $200 as the default. SCTI says that a higher excess may reduce the premium, while the selected excess is generally applied per unexpected event unless the policy says otherwise. The actual premium and cover depend on your quote and policy documents, so check the chosen excess on your Certificate of Insurance. SCTI’s International Comprehensive information.

What is TravelCare Delay Assist?

TravelCare Delay Assist is described as included with International Comprehensive Single Trip cover. SCTI’s New Zealand information says you must register flight details at least 24 hours before departure and that the qualifying delay is at least two hours. It describes a $50 digital voucher per person, subject to a policy-wide cap and endorsement conditions. Treat this as a conditional benefit, not guaranteed compensation for any delay; review the current endorsement for registration rules and other requirements. SCTI’s delay information.

Does ACC cover me if I’m injured overseas?

SCTI lists this among the questions travellers should consider, but ACC should not be treated as a substitute for overseas travel insurance. For the details of this policy’s medical cover, eligibility and exclusions, rely on its wording and your personal documents rather than assuming an injury will qualify. SCTI’s policy information.

What happens if I need medical treatment while travelling overseas?

The policy summary lists medical and evacuation cover, but the circumstances, costs and limits that qualify are controlled by the policy wording. Before travelling, read the assistance and claims requirements in the documents issued for your cover, and keep the relevant contact details available. The summary alone cannot establish whether a particular treatment or evacuation will be covered. SCTI’s policy information.

When does cancellation cover start?

The exact start time and conditions depend on the policy wording and the cover you buy. The product summary distinguishes pre-departure cancellation or changes from trip interruption after departure; do not assume that a cost or event occurring before purchase is covered. Check the policy’s cancellation section and the dates and cover shown on your Certificate of Insurance. SCTI’s policy information.

How should you assess whether it fits your trip?

SCTI’s comparison guidance recommends comparing benefit and excess options and reading exclusions. Use your trip details, not the “unlimited” headline or price alone, to decide whether the policy suits you. SCTI’s comparison guidance.

  • Eligibility: Confirm you meet the New Zealand residency, public-service eligibility and return-trip requirements.
  • Medical circumstances: Review the medical assessment and any endorsements against your health situation; do not infer pre-existing-condition cover from the summary.
  • Cancellation: Compare the selected cancellation limit with your prepaid, non-refundable trip costs.
  • Belongings: Check item limits, depreciation and sublimits for what you plan to take.
  • Trip activities: Verify whether your planned sport, cruise, moped or motorbike use requires optional cover and that it is included.
  • Excess and premium: Balance the quoted premium against the amount you would pay toward a claim for an unexpected event.
  • Claims and assistance: Read the requirements and conditions in the wording and endorsements that apply to your policy.

SCTI’s materials describe the product and its benefits, but they do not establish independent claim-acceptance rates or comparative customer outcomes. That means they are not enough to conclude that SCTI is better value or more likely to pay a claim than another insurer. SCTI’s comparison guidance.
