SCSKiller is a free Windows utility that precompiles supported games’ shaders into the graphics driver’s cache before you play. It can reduce stutters caused by shader compilation, but it does not eliminate every kind of hitch—and support depends on the game, graphics API, and GPU.
What SCSKiller does
A shader is a program the GPU uses to render an effect. When a game needs a shader or graphics pipeline that is not ready in the driver’s cache, the driver may compile it during play, forcing a frame to wait. SCSKiller scans supported games and compiles pipelines it can derive from game files while the game is closed.
Some games’ files do not reveal every pipeline. For those, SCSKiller offers an optional recorder that can collect information during a play session to help identify additional pipelines. Precompilation is therefore a way to reduce certain shader-related waits, not a guarantee that every shader has been prepared.

The project’s README lists Windows 10 version 2004 or Windows 11, 64-bit, and NVIDIA or AMD graphics. Its stated API support is DirectX 12 on both vendors and DirectX 11 on NVIDIA. Intel GPUs are not listed as supported in the reviewed requirements. Check the current README and release notes for changes.

The project lists game libraries including Steam, Epic Games, EA app, GOG, Ubisoft Connect, Xbox for PC, and Battle.net, among others. Launcher support does not mean every game in that library will work: compatibility and the amount of shader data that can be discovered vary by title. Some games need recording; others have unsupported or encrypted files, or anti-cheat restrictions.
What the published results show
SCSKiller’s website describes its figures as developer-published comparisons: about five minutes of play per game with a cold driver cache, followed by another run after SCSKiller compiled shaders. It uses its pipeline recorder and counts a reported stutter when the game waited at least 20 milliseconds for shader compilation. Results can vary by game, GPU, and driver, so these figures are examples rather than a prediction for a particular PC. See SCSKiller’s measurements and methodology.

These are measurements attributed to SCSKiller in 2026, not independent tests. The short sample and specific hardware matter: a lower count in these runs does not establish the same improvement for every driver, game version, or later play session.

Shader compilation is only one possible source of a hitch. Traversal and asset-streaming stutter, resource management, video-memory oversubscription, and other causes can still interrupt play. NVIDIA’s technical training material on shader compilation also discusses compilation costs alongside other potential hitch causes. If SCSKiller does not improve a particular game, the stutter may have another cause—or the relevant shader may not have been discovered or recorded.

The optional recorder is separate from the normal precompile process. Official materials say it places a small d3d12.dll and settings file in the game folder, then records frame times and related data while the game runs. The project says it does not record or inject into anti-cheat games, and those games are not launched by the tool. Review the notes for your specific game before using recording.

How to get it safely
- Open the official GitHub Releases page, which the project identifies as its only official download source.
- Read the current release notes for game-specific support, requirements, and installation details. Do not assume a game is supported solely because it uses DirectX 11 or 12.
- Check the release’s SHA-256 value against the downloaded file before running it.
- Check the current signing status before installation. The reviewed README said releases were not code-signed, warned that SmartScreen might appear, and said Windows Smart App Control blocks unsigned apps; these distribution details can change.
