Short answer: use OpenIV when a vehicle mod replaces or adds models, textures, handling data, or DLC archives. Use Script Hook V when it runs a vehicle spawner, trainer, menu, garage, or other gameplay script. A mod that combines new vehicle files with a scripted spawner may require both. You can install many vehicle replacements without Script Hook V, but you cannot run an ASI vehicle script without a compatible Script Hook V setup.
Script Hook V and OpenIV do different jobs
The names are often treated as interchangeable because many GTA 5 mod lists mention them together. They are not alternatives in the technical sense. Each works at a different layer of the game.
Script Hook V: a runtime loader for scripts
Script Hook V hooks the single-player game at runtime so ASI-based scripts can load. A vehicle spawner, trainer, menu, traffic-control script, or garage script uses this runtime capability. Script Hook V does not open RPF archives and does not replace a vehicle’s model or texture files.

The exact game builds supported by a release can change after a GTA 5 update, so check the current Script Hook V release information and the mod author’s requirements immediately before installing.

OpenIV: an archive editor and mods-folder system
OpenIV opens GTA 5’s RPF archives and lets you work with files such as vehicle models, textures, handling data, vehicle metadata, and DLC configuration. Its GTA 5 support relies on OpenIV.ASI, installed and updated through Tools → ASI Manager.
OpenIV’s safer workflow is to copy the original archive into a parallel mods path, then edit that copy. The original game archive remains untouched, and removing or disabling the mods setup can restore the unmodified files. OpenIV describes the rule this way: “At this point, if you wish to install a mod or alter a file, you must do it in the ‘mods’ folder’s archive.”

File locations vary between vehicle mods and between GTA 5 editions. Treat the mod’s README as the final authority for the exact archive, folder, filename, and dependency.

Do you need Script Hook V for a vehicle replacement?
Usually, no. A replacement that changes only a model, texture, handling entry, or vehicle metadata can work through OpenIV and OpenIV.ASI without Script Hook V. The game reads the modified asset when it loads the relevant vehicle.

You do need Script Hook V if the same download includes an ASI or script that controls spawning, menus, garages, automatic installation, or another runtime feature. Read the package contents and README rather than assuming that every vehicle download needs both utilities.
Can you install a vehicle mod without Script Hook V?
Yes, for archive-based asset work. Install OpenIV, enable its GTA 5 support, copy the required original archive into the matching mods path, and make the vehicle edits there. A replacement vehicle can then be selected through the normal game world or existing game mechanics.
No, if the mod’s essential feature is an ASI or script. Without Script Hook V’s loader, that script will not start, even if the vehicle files themselves are correctly installed. Some scripts also require ScriptHookVDotNet, a trainer, or an additional framework; those are separate dependencies and must be listed by the mod author.

1. Work on single-player files
Use a single-player installation and identify the correct GTA 5 executable before changing anything. Keep your modded setup separate from the files you use for GTA Online.

2. Decide whether the package is an asset, a script, or both
- Model, texture, handling, metadata, RPF, DLC, or
dlclist.xmlinstructions point to OpenIV. - ASI, trainer, menu, spawner, garage, or hotkey instructions point to Script Hook V.
- Two sets of instructions mean the mod needs both tools.
3. Install Script Hook V only when required
- Download a release that states support for your current GTA 5 build and edition.
- Copy
dinput8.dllandScriptHookV.dllinto the directory containingGTA5.exe. - Copy an optional trainer there only if the mod or your planned workflow requires it.
- Start single-player and verify that the game still launches before adding another script.
Do not treat an old loader as permanently compatible. A Rockstar update can change the executable and make a previously working Script Hook V release fail.
4. Install OpenIV’s GTA 5 support
- Install and open OpenIV, then select the appropriate GTA 5 installation.
- Open Tools → ASI Manager.
- Install the ASI Loader and OpenIV.ASI when the mod uses archive edits or the
modsfolder. - Allow OpenIV to create or use the parallel
modsdirectory.
OpenIV.ASI is the component that provides GTA 5 mods support. Keep it updated through ASI Manager when OpenIV or a mod README requires a newer version.
5. Mirror the original archive into mods
- In OpenIV, navigate to the archive named by the mod’s instructions.
- Copy that original archive, preserving the same relative path under
mods. - Open and edit the copy in
mods, not the original archive in the live game path. - Import the supplied model, texture, metadata, or DLC files exactly where the README specifies.
Never skip the archive-copy step just because OpenIV can display the original file. Direct edits risk forcing a repair or redownload when a mistake is made.

6. Add DLC vehicles exactly as documented
An add-on vehicle commonly requires a new DLC folder plus an entry in dlclist.xml. Both the archive path and the XML entry must match the package’s naming and folder structure. Do not copy a replacement-vehicle procedure onto an add-on mod; they use different file layouts.

7. Test one change at a time
Launch single-player after each major change. If the game works, add the next dependency or vehicle. This isolates a bad archive, duplicate filename, unsupported script, or malformed configuration instead of leaving several possible causes to investigate at once.
Compatibility: build, edition, and updates
Compatibility is volatile. Script Hook V, OpenIV components, and individual vehicle mods can stop working after a GTA 5 update. Current Enhanced and Legacy editions may also have different support, paths, or instructions. Do not assume that a Legacy installation guide applies unchanged to Enhanced.
- Check the current Script Hook V release notes before copying loader DLLs.
- Check the vehicle author’s stated game version and edition.
- Confirm whether the package expects OpenIV.ASI, ScriptHookVDotNet, a trainer, or another framework.
- Read the README for the exact archive path; paths can differ by mod and edition.
There is no single complete compatibility matrix covering every combination of game edition, build, loader, OpenIV component, and vehicle package. When documentation conflicts, prefer the current tool release information and the vehicle author’s latest instructions.
Keeping modded files away from GTA Online
Script Hook V and OpenIV modifications are intended for single-player use. A secondary guide from PC Gamer advises disabling mods or playing offline before going online, and Rockstar’s current policy should be checked for the definitive warning because policies can change.

The practical rule is simple: do not enter GTA Online with modified files or active script loaders. Keep a clean installation available, remove or disable the mods setup before launching the online mode, and verify the game starts normally in its unmodified state.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The vehicle appears unchanged
- Confirm that the edited archive is under
mods, not the original game path. - Check that the replacement filename and folder match the vehicle’s definition.
- Verify that OpenIV.ASI and the ASI Loader are installed in ASI Manager.
- Remove duplicate copies that may cause the game to load a different asset.
The spawner or trainer does nothing
- Confirm that
dinput8.dllandScriptHookV.dllare besideGTA5.exe. - Check that the installed Script Hook V release supports the current game build.
- Install any explicitly required framework or trainer dependency.
- Test with only the one script enabled to identify conflicts.
The game crashes during startup
- Undo the most recent archive or XML change.
- Check for a mismatched Enhanced/Legacy procedure.
- Remove newly added ASI files and launch a clean single-player session.
- Restore the untouched archive or temporarily remove the
modsfolder to determine whether the problem is in the modded files.
A game update broke an existing setup
Stop adding more mods. Check for an updated Script Hook V release, OpenIV component update, and vehicle package revision. Until compatible versions are available, use the clean installation or wait rather than mixing old loaders with a newly updated executable.

Recommended decision checklist
- Only a model, texture, handling file, or metadata: start with OpenIV.
- A DLC archive and
dlclist.xmlentry: use OpenIV and follow the add-on README. - A spawner, trainer, garage, menu, or scripted behavior: install Script Hook V if the stated build supports it.
- Assets plus a scripted feature: install and configure both, in the order documented by the mod author.
- An
.oivinstaller: use OpenIV’s package workflow and confirm what the package changes. - Any uncertainty: inspect the README’s dependency list instead of installing both tools by default.
The Bottom Line
OpenIV is the vehicle-file tool; Script Hook V is the vehicle-script loader. Choose OpenIV for replacements and add-ons, Script Hook V for spawners and gameplay behavior, and both when one mod includes assets and scripts. Verify build and edition compatibility before every installation, and keep the entire setup out of GTA Online.
