I used Screen Time and Live Activities side by side for two weeks, and only one changed my habits. That is my experience—not proof that either feature will have the same effect for someone else. The two tools also do different jobs: Screen Time reports usage and offers optional controls, while Live Activities put current, app-provided information where it is easy to see.

What changed—and what this comparison can tell you

“Changed my habits” can mean several things: opening an app less often, checking the phone less, or noticing a behavior sooner. Without a defined behavior and records from before and during the two weeks, the result is a personal impression rather than a measured outcome. Apple’s documentation explains what the features do; it does not establish that either one changes habits.

This is also a comparison of unlike tools, not a controlled test of equivalent interventions. Screen Time can show reports and enforce limits you choose. Live Activities surface information from supported apps while something is in progress. Any difference in how often you encounter them—or what you do with that information—could shape your experience.

What Screen Time does

Screen Time provides reports on app and website use, device pickups, and notifications. You can view daily or weekly summaries. It also includes optional controls such as schedules and app limits, so it can be more than a record of what happened: depending on your settings, it can restrict when or how long you use apps. Apple’s Screen Time guide describes these reports and controls.

Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

If Share Across Devices is enabled, Screen Time settings and reports can include activity from the same Apple Account on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. That matters when interpreting a report: it may reflect more than the iPhone you carried. Check that setting before treating a summary as an iPhone-only record. Apple Support explains Screen Time setup and device sharing.

What Live Activities do

Live Activities show current information supplied by supporting apps in visible places, including the Lock Screen and, on supported iPhone models, the Dynamic Island. Examples include a Voice Memo recording, an AirDrop connection, and directions in Maps. Some include quick actions related to the information on screen. As Apple puts it, they “display your app’s current data” and let people access it at a glance. Apple Developer’s Live Activities documentation describes their purpose and behavior.

The Dynamic Island is not available on every iPhone. Apple’s guide to viewing Live Activities in the Dynamic Island covers that location specifically. Apple says a Live Activity can remain active for up to eight hours and may stay on the Lock Screen for up to four additional hours; those are platform time limits, not evidence of a habit effect. Apple Developer documents these duration limits.

How the two features differ

Question Screen Time Live Activities
What it shows App and website use, pickups, and notifications in reports. Current information provided by a supporting app while an activity is in progress.
Can it restrict use? Yes. Optional schedules and app limits can control app use. It surfaces information and may offer related quick actions; it is not documented as an app-use limit.
Where you encounter it In daily or weekly reports and any controls you configure. On the Lock Screen and, on supported iPhone models, in the Dynamic Island; Apple also documents other system locations.
What can affect the information? Whether activity and controls are configured, plus whether Share Across Devices includes other Apple devices. Whether an app supports a Live Activity and what information it supplies.

How to tell whether a habit actually changed

For a more grounded personal comparison, define the behavior first. “I used my phone less” is broad; “I opened a particular app fewer times after dinner” is easier to check. Record a baseline, keep track of what changed during the two weeks, and look for a matching outcome afterward. Screen Time’s daily and weekly summaries can help with app use, pickups, and notifications, but they cannot by themselves explain why a behavior changed.

  • Emergency SOS via satellite. Crash Detection. Roadside Assistance via satellite
  • Up to 26 hours video playback. USB C, Supports USB 2. Face ID
  • Note the iPhone model and iOS version, and which apps and Live Activities were enabled.
  • Record whether Screen Time’s App & Website Activity and App Limits were on, and whether Share Across Devices was enabled.
  • Write down the specific behavior and a baseline before the comparison, then check the same measure during or after it.
  • Keep track of other changes—such as notification settings or routines—that could also explain a difference.

Without those details and records, the defensible conclusion is limited to the author’s reported experience: one feature seemed to affect a habit during those two weeks. The available Apple documentation does not identify which feature did so or establish a general effect.
