To lock your screen, use your device’s lock command or wait for its automatic lock—but first make sure a passcode, password, PIN, or other sign-in method is required to get back in. Here are the built-in steps for Windows 10 and 11, Android, iPhone and iPad, and Mac, plus the privacy settings worth checking afterward.
What makes a screen lock protect your device?
A lock screen is useful only if returning to the device requires authentication. Microsoft puts it plainly: “Just as you probably lock the door to your home or car when you leave, your devices should have to be unlocked to be accessed too.” Microsoft Support’s device-security guidance recommends requiring authentication. Google likewise notes that turning off an Android screen lock leaves the device unprotected, and Apple’s passcode settings protect access to iPhone and iPad.
Think of setup as three separate choices: how to lock immediately, what authentication is required to unlock, and how long the device may remain idle before it locks. A fourth choice—what remains visible or usable while locked—affects privacy without changing the unlock method.
Lock your screen immediately
Windows 10 and Windows 11
Press Windows key + L. Alternatively, open Start, select the user or account control, and choose Lock. Microsoft’s Windows instructions document both routes.

Set up authentication and automatic locking
Windows 10 and Windows 11
- Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
- Configure Require sign-in so Windows asks you to sign in when waking from sleep. Wording and available choices can vary by Windows version and device configuration.
- Choose a sign-in method available on your device. Windows Hello may offer face recognition, fingerprint, or a PIN; availability depends on the device hardware and setup. See Microsoft’s Windows Hello overview.
For another automatic-lock option, Windows Dynamic lock can use a paired phone’s Bluetooth proximity. Microsoft says the PC locks within about a minute after the phone moves out of Bluetooth range. Treat it as a backup convenience, not a replacement for locking before you leave: proximity and connection conditions can affect when it triggers. Details are in Microsoft’s Dynamic lock guidance.

If Security or Screen lock is missing, search Settings for “screen lock” or consult the device manufacturer’s support information. Menu names and available options vary across Android versions and manufacturers.

- Resistance to guessing: On Android, Google recommends a PIN with at least six digits and describes a strong password as the most secure option among PIN, pattern, and password. Avoid shortcuts such as Android Auto-confirm unlock if the reduced security is not worth the convenience.
- Convenience and accessibility: A shorter unlock action may be easier to use, while biometrics can make returning to the device faster where supported. Windows Hello face or fingerprint sign-in depends on the device; Apple’s Face ID or Touch ID options depend on the model.
- Automatic-lock delay: A shorter idle interval reduces the time an unattended device stays accessible, but may interrupt tasks. Pick the shortest interval that works for how you use the device, then lock manually whenever you step away.
- Information visible while locked: Notifications, widgets, and other permitted features can expose information even when the device requires authentication to unlock. Review the relevant locked-screen controls separately from your passcode or password.
Limit what people can see on a locked screen
On iPhone and iPad, open Settings > Face ID & Passcode or Touch ID & Passcode, then review Allow Access When Locked. Apple lists features such as Control Center and widgets among the options that may be accessible from the Lock Screen. Turning off access to a feature can prevent someone holding the device from viewing related personal information, but you also lose that quick access yourself. Apple describes these controls in its passcode guide.
On other platforms, review lock-screen notification and privacy settings if you do not want message previews or other details visible while locked. Available controls differ by operating-system version, device maker, and app. Hiding previews can protect private content at a glance, though it may make notifications less useful until you unlock.
Quick Recap
If the settings path does not match
- Search Settings for lock, screen lock, or sign-in; names and paths change between versions.
- On Android, if Security is absent, use the manufacturer’s help because device makers can reorganize or rename these controls.
- On iPhone or iPad, look for Face ID & Passcode or Touch ID & Passcode, as appropriate for the model.
- On Mac, look under System Settings > Lock Screen; available timing and password controls depend on macOS.
- On Windows, verify both the sign-in method and the requirement to sign in after sleep; setting a PIN or biometric alone does not establish the idle-lock interval.
