Often, yes: screen ghosting can be reduced by changing the monitor’s response-time or overdrive setting. If the problem persists, test the signal path and distinguish a moving trail from a static after-image. There is no universal best setting, and the fastest option can make the picture look worse.
What screen ghosting looks like
Monitor ghosting usually means a visible trail or shadow behind an object as it moves. It is associated with how the display responds to motion. A bright or opposite-color halo can point to a different issue: excessive overdrive, which can make a monitor’s pixels change too aggressively.
Manufacturers describe these effects differently, and menu labels vary by model. Dell notes that the fastest response-time setting may create ghosting through excessive overdrive; Sony likewise warns that its Faster mode can cause ghosting or inverse ghosting. Faster is not automatically clearer.
How to troubleshoot motion ghosting
-
Try a less aggressive response-time mode
Open the monitor’s on-screen display and find its response-time, pixel-response, or overdrive control. If the trail began or worsened after selecting the fastest option, switch to a slower mode and compare moving content. Sony recommends Standard or Fast instead of Faster when ghosting or inverse ghosting appears. Dell advises experimenting with modes because the best choice depends on the setup and user. Use the visible trail and any halo to judge the result rather than assuming the highest speed is best.

-
Connect the monitor directly to the source
To check whether a dock or splitter is involved, connect the monitor directly to the computer or other source. Make sure both cable ends are clean and firmly seated. ViewSonic recommends these checks when troubleshooting shadowing or double images.
-
Swap the cable or source
Test another compatible cable, then another device if one is available. Note whether the symptom follows a particular cable, dock, source, or content path—or remains on the monitor across those changes. For a long connection run over 3 m/10 ft, ViewSonic recommends a Premium Certified HDMI cable or a high-quality shielded cable. That is a signal-path check, not a fix for ghosting caused by pixel response or overdrive.

Seek model-specific support if checks make no difference
If the symptom remains after changing response-time modes, connecting directly, and swapping cables or sources, consult the display maker’s support guidance or a qualified repair service. These checks do not establish that every persistent case is a hardware defect.

Tell motion ghosting from a static after-image
A moving trail appears behind objects in motion. A faint image that remains on a still screen is a different symptom, described in some LCD guidance as an after-image or ghost image. Philips says a static after-image may fade after the display is switched off and recommends a moving screensaver or periodic screen refresh when displaying static content. Do not assume a persistent mark is motion ghosting based only on a brief description.

What the troubleshooting results suggest
- If changing overdrive or response-time mode changes the trail or halo, the monitor’s motion settings are a likely factor.
- If the symptom appears only with one source, cable, dock, or content path, investigate that part of the setup.
- If it remains on the monitor across sources and cables, use the model’s support guidance; the result alone does not prove a hardware failure.
