Scream is overdue for a video game that makes its central tension playable: deciding whom to trust when anyone could be hiding something. The franchise has appeared in a mobile game before, but that is not the same as a full-scale adaptation built around investigation, survival, and the series’ signature reversals. No official Scream video game announcement surfaced in the Paramount materials reviewed here.

Why a Scream game makes sense now

Scream is unusually well suited to interactive storytelling because its suspense depends on concealed motives, competing explanations, and characters who know the rules of horror movies but cannot be sure how those rules apply to them. A player can do more than watch a suspicious character behave strangely: they can decide whether to investigate, warn someone, share evidence, or risk an accusation.

The franchise also remains active. In a May 21, 2026 release, Paramount called Scream 7 the latest chapter and reported that it had earned over $214 million worldwide, making it the franchise’s highest-grossing installment at that point. That is Paramount’s own box-office figure, not an independent analysis. The same release said the film would arrive on Paramount+ in the United States and Canada on May 28, 2026; streaming availability can vary by territory and change over time. Paramount’s release does not announce a game.

What a Scream video game should let you do

The strongest adaptation would make suspicion an action rather than a mood. The player should gather clues, compare alibis, choose whom to trust, and decide how to protect people who may be in danger. Those choices need consequences: an accusation might expose a threat, alienate an ally, or send the investigation in the wrong direction. The point is not to let players solve the mystery immediately, but to make them feel the cost of acting with incomplete information.

Keep the mystery fair, not obvious

Clues should support more than one plausible interpretation until the story is ready to reveal what is happening. A changing evidence trail, conflicting accounts, and carefully timed reversals could reward attention without turning the game into a checklist where the culprit is obvious as soon as the player finds the right object. A reveal should reframe earlier events, not invalidate the player’s choices as meaningless.

Make survival and investigation work together

Chases and danger belong in a Scream game, but they should not crowd out the decisions that make the franchise distinctive. A player might have to choose between helping a character, pursuing a lead, or reaching a safer location. The game can make that choice tense without reducing every encounter to combat or a generic pursuit sequence.

Give the ensemble distinct motives

Suspicion is only compelling when characters feel like people rather than interchangeable suspects. Different relationships, access to information, and willingness to cooperate could shape what the player learns. The resulting drama should come from both the danger of being wrong and the consequences of deciding who deserves trust.

Which game format fits the premise?

Several formats could work, but each would emphasize a different part of the franchise. These are design possibilities, not descriptions of a game in development.

Format What it could emphasize Main risk
Single-player interactive thriller Investigation, character relationships, and decisions that shape what the player knows. Choices may feel cosmetic if they do not meaningfully affect information or outcomes.
Ensemble survival game Group decisions, competing priorities, and the possibility of different survivors or endings. Multiple outcomes can weaken the impact of a carefully staged reveal if the mystery changes too freely.
Asymmetrical online chase game The recognizable mask, pursuit, and the pressure of escaping as a group. Chase-focused play could make the experience feel interchangeable with other licensed horror games while leaving little room for mystery.
Hybrid story and multiplayer modes A narrative campaign alongside repeatable play with friends. The extra scope could pull resources away from the story and character work that make the adaptation distinctive.

The best choice is the format that preserves surprise while giving players agency, making characters distinct, and supporting replay without turning the reveal into a routine optimization problem. A multiplayer mode could complement the story, but it should not displace it.

Scream has had a game before, but not this adaptation

Scre4m was cataloged by MobyGames as a 2011 iPhone release from TWC Games, developed by Codeglue. Its description identifies it as a stealth-horror game in which the player takes the role of Ghost Face. A contemporaneous trade report also documented TWC Games’ plans to develop games using Dimension Films properties, including Scream. That history means it would be inaccurate to say the franchise has never appeared in a game; it does not establish a current console or PC adaptation. MobyGames’ Scre4m entry and the 2011 Post Magazine report document that earlier tie-in.

The rights question is more complicated than the mask

The Ghost Face mask is a familiar symbol, but the rights to the mask and the Scream film franchise are distinct. GameSpot reports that the franchise licensor is not the same as the mask licensor. A 2017 interview with a proposed game’s lead developer also described the need at that time to negotiate with Dimension Films and affiliates while working with mask creator R.J. Torbert. Those accounts explain why a recognizable character design alone would not settle the permissions required for a game; they do not provide a current map of ownership, contracts, or an active developer’s license. GameSpot’s rights reporting and the 2017 developer interview describe the issue from their respective reporting periods.

Paramount Games is a possible route, not an announcement

Paramount Games introduced itself on June 18, 2026, as an operation unifying Skydance games groups and Paramount intellectual-property work, with development, publishing, and interactive licensing across its portfolio. Its introduction says the studio aims to make “the games that define franchises — the ones fans return to for years.” That is studio marketing language, not evidence of a Scream project. Paramount’s current Scream release information and the Paramount Games announcement name no such game, and they do not establish that a particular developer is pursuing a license. Paramount Games is a plausible route to investigate for a future project, subject to the rights coordination a Scream adaptation may require. Paramount Games’ introduction
