A feedback between oxygen, ocean sulfate, microbial activity and phosphorus recycling may have helped Earth remain oxygenated after the Great Oxidation Event about 2.3 billion years ago. A 2026 study of ancient South African rocks argues that the crucial distinction is not how much phosphorus existed, but how much was actually available to organisms.
What happened after the Great Oxidation Event?
The Great Oxidation Event marks the point, around 2.3 billion years ago, when oxygen became a lasting component of Earth’s atmosphere. That transition was not necessarily a smooth climb to modern conditions. Oxygen levels could rise and fall substantially, and the oceans and atmosphere continued to change over tens of millions of years.
The new work proposes a mechanism that could have helped sustain oxygenation during those fluctuations. As oxygen entered the oceans, it altered seawater chemistry and increased the importance of sulfate. Microbes using sulfate while breaking down organic matter could have released phosphorus back into seawater. That phosphorus would have supported more biological growth, which in turn could have allowed more organic carbon to be buried in seafloor sediments instead of decomposed.
Decomposition consumes oxygen. When more organic carbon is buried, less of it is available for oxygen-consuming decay, so oxygen can accumulate more readily in the atmosphere. The proposed cycle is therefore a reinforcing feedback rather than a one-time event.

The proposed oxygen–sulfate–phosphorus feedback
- Oxygen changes ocean chemistry. Rising oxygen affects minerals and dissolved compounds, including sulfate in seawater.
- Sulfate-reducing microbes process organic matter. Their activity can return phosphorus to the water.
- Available phosphorus supports productivity. Phosphorus is an essential nutrient for cellular growth and ecosystem production.
- More organic carbon is buried. Carbon preserved in sediments is not immediately broken down by oxygen-consuming reactions.
- Oxygen accumulation is favored. Reduced oxygen consumption can help maintain atmospheric oxygen, although the overall level may still fluctuate.
Andrey Bekker, a geologist identified by the University of California, Riverside (UC Riverside), summarized the biological role of the nutrient: “Living things cannot grow or function properly without phosphorus.” He also said that greater phosphorus availability could allow more organic carbon to be buried, with “more oxygen continued to be released into the atmosphere” as a side effect.
What the South African rocks reveal
The researchers analyzed ancient rocks from South Africa using sequential dissolution. This procedure dissolves mineral components in stages so scientists can determine which minerals host the phosphorus. The goal is to separate phosphorus that could have been accessible to organisms from phosphorus locked inside mineral structures and effectively unavailable to life.

That distinction matters because a measurement of total phosphorus can overstate the nutrient supply an ancient ocean actually offered. Two samples may contain similar total amounts while differing greatly in the fraction microbes and other organisms could use. Bekker said the method means, “We can now separate the phosphorus that was available to organisms from phosphorus that was essentially locked away.” He added that this provides “a much clearer picture of nutrient levels in ancient oceans than we had before.”

What is established—and what remains an interpretation
The rocks provide geochemical evidence, while the oxygen–sulfate–microbe–phosphorus sequence is the researchers’ interpretation of how those signals may fit together. UC Riverside reported the study as “A nutrient control on oxygenation dynamics during Earth’s Great Oxidation Episode,” by Lewis J. Alcott, Benjamin J. W. Mills, Andrey Bekker, Zidong Peng and Simon W. Poulton, published in Nature Communications in 2026 (volume 17, article 1; DOI 10.1038/s41467-026-76597-y).

The journal article could not be independently accessed for this report, so detailed numerical results, datasets and the paper’s full discussion of limitations have not been checked here. The evidence supports a proposed feedback; it does not show that atmospheric oxygen stayed uniformly high or that phosphorus was the sole control on habitability.
Why oxygenation may have fluctuated
The feedback could have strengthened oxygenation when phosphorus was recycled into seawater, but changes in mineral chemistry, microbial communities, burial rates and ocean circulation could have interrupted it. The result is a picture of oxygen levels varying over long intervals rather than remaining permanently abundant after the Great Oxidation Event.

That possibility also bears on the long delay before complex organisms appeared. If oxygen was plentiful during some extended periods, oxygen scarcity alone may not explain why complex life emerged much later. Other environmental or biological constraints could have mattered, but this study does not resolve that question.
What the finding could mean today
UC Riverside connected the work to modern ocean oxygen loss. The ancient feedback may help scientists think about how nutrient recycling and oxygen-consuming decomposition interact, but the study does not predict the future of present-day ecosystems. Modern oceans differ in chemistry, circulation, temperature and biology, so an ancient mechanism cannot be applied as a direct forecast.

The same caution applies to astrobiology. Understanding how nutrients and oxygen co-evolved on Earth may guide the interpretation of ocean-bearing worlds, yet these rocks do not demonstrate life beyond Earth or establish a universal recipe for habitability.
The central takeaway
Earth’s oxygenation was likely a coupled process involving atmosphere, ocean chemistry, microbes and nutrient availability. The 2026 study’s key advance is a mineral-specific way to estimate biologically available phosphorus rather than relying only on total phosphorus. That evidence supports the possibility that phosphorus recycling helped reinforce oxygen accumulation after the Great Oxidation Event, while leaving open how large the effect was and why oxygen and complex life followed different timelines.
