A 2026 study mapped 539 lipid-defined clusters, which its authors call “lipizones,” across adult mouse brains. The map reveals a chemical layer of brain organization that can complement anatomical and gene-based maps. These are not 539 newly discovered anatomical compartments in humans: the atlas is specific to mice, and the clusters are defined by lipid patterns.

What are the 539 lipizones?

Lipizones are regions identified by combinations and spatial distributions of lipids—molecules that include fats and other compounds with structural and signaling roles. The researchers grouped spatial lipid patterns into 539 clusters. Many partly aligned with known brain regions and cell types, while the map also captured lipid patterns in distant axon terminals.

The study therefore adds a chemical dimension to brain maps; it does not redraw the brain’s gross anatomy. EPFL professor Giovanni D’Angelo described lipids as working “like postal codes,” giving distant but related brain areas the same chemical address. That is a metaphor for shared patterns, not a claim that lipids literally route messages between regions.

How the mouse-brain atlas was built

Luca Fusar Bassini and colleagues used matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry imaging (MALDI–MSI) to map lipids in brain tissue. The Nature paper reports 172 mapped lipids across 109 sections from 11 mice. Across those samples, the team mapped 26,874 peaks over 7.2 million pixels, computationally grouped the spatial patterns, and aligned the data to the Allen Brain Atlas Common Coordinate Framework to create a three-dimensional mouse-brain atlas.

The paper, “The lipidomic architecture of the mouse brain,” was published in Nature on 23 September 2026 (volume 658, pages 205–217; DOI 10.1038/s41586-026-11050-0). Read the study in Nature.

What the lipid map adds to existing brain maps

Brain maps can describe different kinds of organization. An anatomical atlas locates structures; a gene-expression map describes where particular genes are active. This atlas maps lipid distributions. Its value is not that one signal replaces the others, but that lipid patterns can reveal chemical differences that may not be apparent from anatomy or gene-based maps alone.

White matter is chemically patchy

The team found a patchwork of chemically distinct territories in white matter, where nerve fibers are insulated by myelin. The result suggests that white matter is not chemically uniform. Study author Luca Fusar Bassini told EPFL: “This shows that the cells which make myelin are far more varied in their chemistry than their genes alone would suggest.”

Other mapped territories

The researchers also reported biochemical zonation in the choroid plexus and along ventricular walls. The map captured lipid patterns associated with distal axon terminals as well as patterns that partly corresponded to known regions and cell types.

What changed in pregnant mice

The study compared lipid patterns in pregnant mice and reported changes across brain regions. It describes white-matter metabolic activation and lipizone-specific remodeling in the cortex, especially in layer 4. EPFL’s summary also reports increased galactosyl ceramide across much of the white matter. Study author Gioele La Manno said: “Together, these shifts suggest the brain retunes its own wiring to meet the demands of pregnancy.”

These are observations in mice, not evidence that the same changes occur in pregnant people. The study does not establish that the lipid shifts cause a particular outcome, nor does it demonstrate a pregnancy-related diagnostic test or treatment.

What the discovery does—and does not—mean for people

The “539 compartments” phrasing can give the wrong impression. The number refers to analysis-defined lipid clusters in an adult mouse-brain atlas, not 539 new anatomical parts discovered in humans. The study does not show that lipizones cause disease or provide a clinical intervention.

The method may inform future research on brain development, physiology, and pathology, but the mouse map cannot simply be transferred to people. Fusar Bassini told EPFL: “What transfers to humans isn’t the map, it’s the method, and the fact that we now know that a healthy brain has a very organized lipid map at all.”
