NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has identified three recurring atmospheric states on SIMP 0136, an isolated planetary-mass object about 20 light-years away in Pisces. The object is unresolved in Webb’s images: it appears as one point of light. Astronomers detected its weather by tracking tiny brightness changes at different wavelengths as SIMP 0136 rotated.
The analysis found that most of the changing signal comes from two physical factors—temperature and the vertical structure of clouds. Those factors combine into hotter, thinner-cloud regions; cooler, higher, thicker-cloud regions; and transitional mixtures between them.
What SIMP 0136 is
SIMP 0136 is often described as a brown dwarf, but NASA classifies it more precisely as an isolated planetary-mass object. It does not orbit a star, so it is not technically an exoplanet. NASA’s object information gives it a mass of about 13 Jupiters and an atmospheric temperature near 1,100 kelvins (about 825°C). Its distance is approximately 20 light-years.

Because it is starless, SIMP 0136 can be observed without a nearby host star overwhelming its own infrared signal. That makes it a useful laboratory for studying the same broad atmospheric physics that operates on giant exoplanets.

How Webb detected weather from one unresolved point
Time-series spectroscopy during rotation
JWST’s NIRSpec and MIRI instruments monitored SIMP 0136 through two complete rotations in July 2023. They did not resolve a disk, cloud bands or individual storms. Instead, the instruments recorded how much light arrived at many wavelengths and how that spectrum changed with time.
As the object spun, different longitudes and latitudes rotated into view. A region with a different temperature, cloud altitude or chemistry altered the combined spectrum by a small amount. Repeating this measurement through a rotation turned those wavelength-specific changes into evidence of atmospheric structure.

Principal component analysis separates the dominant signals
The team applied principal component analysis (PCA), a statistical method that finds the few independent patterns responsible for most of the variation in a large set of measurements. In this case, two dominant components explained most of the atmospheric variability: temperature and the vertical organization of clouds.
PCA does not produce a photograph or label a particular longitude as a weather zone. It compresses changing spectra into physically interpretable patterns, giving researchers a fast way to identify which atmospheric processes deserve detailed modelling.

The three recurring weather states

These are recurring statistical states, not three clearly edged continents of weather. Every observed spectrum combines light from multiple longitudes and latitudes, so a single measurement generally contains a mixture of regimes. The labels describe the dominant atmospheric balance in the signal, not a claim that one pure state occupies one isolated patch.
Why “single pixel” is an accurate description
In an image, SIMP 0136 is unresolved. The telescope receives its total light without separating the object’s surface into independently imaged pixels. The weather map is therefore inferred indirectly from the spectrum: changes in brightness at one wavelength can trace a different atmospheric depth or chemical response than changes at another wavelength.

Lead author Merle Schrader, quoted by EarthSky, described the result as mapping weather interactions when “all we observe directly of these objects is a single pixel spread across the light spectrum.” That phrase refers to the information content of the time-varying spectrum, not to a literal visible photograph of three weather systems.
The pattern persists, even as details change
The study reports that the dominant temperature-and-cloud drivers remain detectable for more than a dozen rotations, while the detailed appearance of the atmosphere evolves. The two-rotation JWST monitoring sequence captured the object repeatedly, and the broader persistence result indicates that the underlying atmospheric organization is more stable than any one detailed pattern.

This persistence should not be confused with a daily forecast. It means that the main statistical components continue to describe the changing spectra over time; it does not specify the conditions at a particular longitude tomorrow or predict when a cloud feature will form or disappear.
Why the result matters for exoplanet science
Brown dwarfs and other isolated planetary-mass objects are directly observable test beds for giant-planet atmospheres. They emit their own infrared light, so astronomers can study temperature, clouds and chemistry without separating a faint planet from the glare of its star.
Applying the same PCA approach to additional brown dwarfs and giant exoplanets could test whether persistent temperature–cloud structures are common or specific to SIMP 0136. The method also provides an efficient first pass: researchers can identify the dominant components before committing time and computing resources to physics-heavy atmospheric models. Trinity College Dublin associate professor Johanna Vos said this rapid identification can guide the analysis of future JWST observations.

What the observations can—and cannot—tell us
- They can show: wavelength-dependent variability, the dominant temperature and cloud-structure components, recurring statistical states and their persistence across rotations.
- They cannot show directly: a resolved image of cloud boundaries, a unique weather map for each longitude, or an operational forecast of future conditions.
- They require qualification: the three states are mixed endmembers derived from unresolved spectra, so their boundaries and exact geographic locations are not measured.
The result is therefore a characterization technique rather than a weather service. It demonstrates that rotational spectroscopy can recover meaningful atmospheric organization from a distant object that never becomes more than a point of light in the telescope’s image.
