The claim that a strange chemical signal in dinosaur teeth came from the deep sea is not verified by the sources located for this topic. The related deep-sea fossil study that can be identified examined conodonts—fossils from extinct marine animals—not dinosaurs. Without the original dinosaur-tooth study or a reliable report identifying it, the signal and its proposed origin cannot be confirmed.

What is known about the dinosaur-teeth claim?

No matching primary study or original report was identified that establishes what the alleged signal was, which dinosaur teeth were analyzed, or why a deep-sea origin was proposed. That leaves the headline’s central claim unverified: it should not be presented as a confirmed discovery or as an explanation accepted by researchers.

To assess the claim, readers would need the original paper or a reliable report that identifies it and describes its samples, chemical measurements, results, and limitations. Without those details, it is not possible to determine whether the signal was measured in the teeth themselves, introduced during burial, or interpreted in another way.

What does the related deep-sea fossil study actually show?

A 2023 study examined rare-earth elements (REEs) in conodont fossils found in Triassic deep-sea pelagic rocks. Conodonts are tooth-like structures belonging to extinct marine animals; they are not dinosaur teeth. The authors reported REE-rich layers and concluded that the fossils’ REE signatures were acquired from surrounding siliceous material during diagenesis—the chemical and physical changes that occur as sediment becomes rock and fossils are buried. [c001]

This is an example of how a fossil’s chemical record can reflect its burial environment. It does not identify a chemical signal in dinosaur teeth or show that dinosaur teeth acquired one from the deep sea.

Why does fossil chemistry need careful interpretation?

Chemical imaging can map compounds and help researchers characterize fossil preservation, trace elements, isotopes, and biomarkers. But different techniques have different limits, and a chemical pattern alone does not establish when or how a substance entered a fossil. Interpretation depends on the method, the sample, and evidence that distinguishes original biological chemistry from changes after burial. [c002]

That distinction matters to the claim in the headline. A deep-sea explanation would need to be supported by the study’s actual measurements and geological context; the conodont result cannot substitute for that evidence.

Does research on shark teeth support the dinosaur claim?

No. A separate 2020 study used modern and fossil shark teeth to investigate seawater calcium-isotope composition and strontium over geological time. Shark teeth are from marine vertebrates, and that work concerns ancient seawater chemistry; it is not evidence about dinosaur teeth or the unidentified signal described in the headline. [c003]

What would verify the proposed deep-sea origin?

A useful account of the claim would need to name the study and establish at least the following:

  • Which dinosaur teeth were analyzed and where they were found.
  • What chemical signal was measured and which analytical methods were used.
  • What evidence links the signal to a deep-sea setting, rather than to other stages of preservation or contamination.
  • Which alternative explanations the researchers tested and what limitations they reported.

Until such a source is identified, the defensible conclusion is limited: the deep-sea conodont study demonstrates that burial can shape fossil chemistry, but it does not verify the claim about dinosaur teeth.
