The Schlage Sense Pro can unlock as you approach, but only when paired with a supported Apple device and a compatible Thread-enabled home hub. Schlage’s UWB-based Converge feature is designed to judge whether your movement shows intent to enter; a Tom’s Guide reviewer reported that it worked in their home, alongside a battery-drain issue tied to one particular setup. The lock launched in 2026 at a US MSRP of $399.

What UWB adds to Apple Home Key

Ordinary NFC-based Home Key access requires you to bring a supported device close to the lock and tap. With the Sense Pro, Schlage’s Converge feature uses Ultra Wideband (UWB) to assess your speed, trajectory and motion, then unlock when your approach suggests you intend to enter. That is the basis of hands-free Home Key access; it is not simply an unlock triggered whenever you are near the door.

Schlage says its UWB implementation uses IEEE 802.15.4z and the protocol’s Scrambled Timestamp Sequence to help resist eavesdropping and tampering. That is the manufacturer’s explanation of the security design, not independent verification. Schlage describes the approach and compatibility requirements on its Sense Pro technology and compatibility page.

Does the Sense Pro unlock automatically when you walk up?

It can, with the right setup and entrance mode. Schlage lists three hands-free modes: intuitive, touch and delay. Intuitive is intended to unlock as you reach the door; touch detects your approach but still requires a touch; delay waits briefly at the door before unlocking. The lock also supports NFC tap-to-unlock, keypad codes, app control and one-touch locking, so automatic approach unlocking is only one way to use it.

In a review published August 5, 2026, Tom’s Guide reported using the lock for more than two months. The reviewer said it unlocked while they approached with an iPhone in hand or pocket, and did not unlock when they merely lingered near the entrance. That is one reviewer’s experience in one home, not evidence that every installation will behave identically. Tom’s Guide’s Sense Pro review provides the account.

Apple devices, software and hub requirements

Schlage’s listed requirements for hands-free Apple Home Key are specific. The supported iPhone list starts at iPhone 11, with iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generations) and iPhone 16e excluded; the phone must run iOS 18.5 or later. Apple Watch support starts at Series 6, excludes Apple Watch SE, and requires watchOS 11.5 or later. A compatible Thread-enabled home hub is also required.

Pairing the lock with Apple Home commissions Home Key. The Schlage Home app is optional and adds Schlage-specific remote management and settings. Apple Home remote control and automations require a home hub, according to Schlage Residential Support. Android users should not assume they can use UWB wallet unlocking at launch: Schlage says Aliro wallet support is expected after certification, rather than confirmed as complete.

Connectivity, access codes and outage behavior

The Sense Pro supports Matter over Thread and has built-in Wi-Fi. Schlage says Thread can keep Matter-over-Thread devices working if Wi-Fi goes out, and its FAQ says hands-free unlocking, Bluetooth access through Schlage Home and keypad access remain available during power or Wi-Fi outages. Remote access and ecosystem-specific features still depend on the chosen setup, hub and network conditions; an outage does not mean every connected function remains available.

Schlage’s product page lists up to 250 custom access codes and configurable auto-lock settings. The company’s FAQ identifies the deadbolt as ANSI Grade 2. These are manufacturer-listed specifications, not comparative test results.

What the review says about battery drain

The same Tom’s Guide reviewer reported that the battery level fell to 51% after a couple of weeks in their tested configuration. They later attributed the rapid drain to connecting the lock to Apple Home over Thread and the Schlage app over Wi-Fi at the same time. The reviewer said Schlage did not recommend that combination and reported better battery behavior after resetting the lock to Thread alone.

This is a setup-specific observation from one review, not a universal battery-life finding or a manufacturer guarantee. The review also mentions an expected battery life of up to six months and recommends alkaline batteries; the cited Schlage product materials do not establish those figures, so they should be treated as review-reported guidance rather than verified product specifications.

Price, launch and a competing UWB lock

Schlage announced the Sense Pro at CES on January 6, 2025, initially targeting availability later that year. Its later June 16, 2026 launch announcement set retail availability for June 29, 2026 and gave a US MSRP of $399. Schlage named Amazon, Lowe’s and The Home Depot among national retailers. The MSRP is not a promise of the current price at any retailer.

Tom’s Guide compares the Sense Pro with the Aqara U400, describing that model as another UWB lock with a keypad and fingerprint reader. The available comparison does not establish current prices or a complete, current specification comparison, so it is not enough to declare one the better value. For a purchase decision, check each maker’s current device and hub requirements, alternative entry methods, physical-key design, security grade, availability and selling price.

Is the Schlage Sense Pro worth considering?

The Sense Pro’s clearest distinction is hands-free UWB unlocking that uses approach behavior, while retaining keypad, NFC and app access. The reported approach test is promising, but a single reviewer’s experience cannot establish reliability across homes, and the reported battery issue shows why the exact connection setup matters. At Schlage’s stated $399 US MSRP, it makes most sense to evaluate the lock against your Apple device and Thread hub compatibility, desired entry methods and the price available when you shop.
