To scan using your printer’s flatbed or document feeder, the printer must be a scanner-equipped multifunction printer and have an Android-compatible scan method. Start with the printer maker’s official Android app for your exact model; if the device is Mopria Scan certified, Mopria Scan can discover it when the tablet and printer are on the same Wi-Fi network.

If your printer has no supported Android scan route, use the Galaxy tablet’s Camera app instead. That captures the paper with the tablet camera, saves it in Gallery, and can be exported as a PDF through Samsung Notes—it does not use the printer’s scanner.

First decide which scanner you mean

“Scan from my printer to my Samsung tablet” can describe two different workflows:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Printer scan: the paper goes on the printer’s flatbed or into its automatic document feeder. The printer digitizes it and sends the result to the tablet through a compatible Android app.
  • Tablet-camera scan: the Galaxy tablet photographs the paper with its Camera app. No scanner-equipped printer or printer app is required.

The first workflow generally gives better results for multi-page jobs and uses the printer’s feeder. It is also model-dependent: having Wi-Fi printing enabled does not prove that scanning is supported. The second workflow is the reliable fallback when your printer cannot scan to Android.

What you need for a printer-to-tablet scan

  • A multifunction printer (MFP) or other printer with a working flatbed or document feeder. A print-only model cannot create a scan.
  • A Samsung Galaxy tablet running a compatible Android/One UI version.
  • Either the printer manufacturer’s Android app with a Scan function for your exact model, or a scanner/MFP certified for Mopria Scan.
  • For the Mopria method, the tablet and scanner must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Guest networks that isolate devices can prevent discovery.
  • Paper positioned correctly on the glass or in the feeder, with the printer powered on and not showing an error.

App names, permissions, supported file types and menu labels vary by manufacturer, model, region and Android version. Use the current manual for the exact printer when an app’s screen differs from the instructions below.

Route 1: use the printer manufacturer’s Android app

This is the best first attempt because the manufacturer can expose model-specific settings such as feeder selection, duplex scanning, resolution and destination. Do not install a random print plug-in and assume it can receive scans; printing and scanning are separate features.

  1. Find the exact model number. Read the label on the printer or its control-panel information page. Include suffixes such as regional or wireless variants when searching the manufacturer’s support site.
  2. Check scan support for Android. The current support page or manual should explicitly mention scanning from Android, a mobile app, or a supported scan protocol. Confirm that your model—not merely the product family—appears in the compatibility list.
  3. Install or open the named app. Grant the app the nearby-device, local-network or storage permissions it requests. The label may be “Scan,” “Scan document” or similar.
  4. Add the printer. Select the discovered printer or follow the app’s manual-add procedure. If the app asks for the printer’s address, use the address shown in the printer’s network settings.
  5. Prepare the original. Put one page face down on the marked corner of the flatbed, or load the pages into the feeder according to the printer’s diagram. Remove staples and keep the stack within the feeder’s limit.
  6. Open Scan and choose available options. Depending on the model, you may be able to choose color or black-and-white, paper size, resolution, one- or two-sided scanning, and the feeder or glass.
  7. Start the scan. Wait until the printer finishes before moving the page. If the app offers a preview, check orientation, cropping and legibility, then rescan or adjust before saving.
  8. Save or share the result. Use the app’s Save, Share or Export control and select a location such as tablet storage or a cloud service offered by the app. The exact formats and destination choices are model-specific.

If the app can print but has no Scan command, that usually means the model’s Android integration is print-only or the wrong app was installed. Recheck the model-specific support page rather than changing Samsung print settings.

Route 2: scan with Mopria Scan

Mopria Scan is an Android option for compatible scanners and MFPs. Its app listing describes automatic discovery of scanners on the same Wi-Fi network and instructs users to verify that the scanner or MFP is Mopria Scan certified. Manufacturer documentation from Canon and Epson also describes importing scans to Android with compatible products.

  1. Verify certification first. Check the printer’s specifications or the manufacturer’s compatibility information for Mopria Scan support. A printer that supports Mopria printing is not automatically confirmed to support Mopria scanning.
  2. Put both devices on one network. Connect the Galaxy tablet and the printer to the same home or office Wi-Fi network. Do not use a guest SSID that blocks device-to-device communication.
  3. Open Mopria Scan. Allow nearby-device or local-network access if Android requests it. The app should search for compatible scanners and MFPs.
  4. Select the printer. Tap the discovered device. If several scanners appear, match the displayed model name with the label on your printer.
  5. Set the available scan options. Options depend on the device and app version; choose the paper source, color mode or resolution only when those controls are offered.
  6. Start the scan and review it. Place the original on the glass or in the feeder, start the job, and use any preview or adjustment controls provided by the app.
  7. Save, share or export. Store the resulting file on the tablet or send it to another app using the controls shown. Mopria documentation establishes Android importing, but it does not define one universal set of file formats or button names for every printer.

If no device appears, the same-network check is the first thing to repeat. Then verify power, scanner capability and Mopria certification before changing tablet settings.

Printer app versus Mopria Scan

Route Uses Compatibility check Network requirement Output controls
Manufacturer Android app Printer’s flatbed or feeder Exact printer model must be supported by that app Follow the manufacturer’s instructions; requirements vary Model-specific settings and save/share options
Mopria Scan Printer’s flatbed or feeder Scanner or MFP must be Mopria Scan certified Tablet and scanner on the same Wi-Fi network Options and formats vary by device and app version
Galaxy Camera app Tablet camera pointed at the paper No printer compatibility required No printer network connection required Image saved to Gallery; Samsung Notes can export it as PDF

Fallback: scan the paper with the Galaxy tablet camera

Use this route when the printer is print-only, the model has no Android scan support, or network discovery cannot be made to work. It is also convenient for a single page when speed matters more than feeder operation.

  1. Open the Camera app on the Galaxy tablet.
  2. Lay the page flat in good, even light. Keep the tablet parallel to the page and include all four edges in the viewfinder.
  3. Point the camera at the document. When Samsung’s document-detection control appears, tap Scan.
  4. Review the captured page and save it. Samsung’s instructions place the saved image in Gallery.
  5. For editing, open the image in Samsung Notes or import it into a note. Use Samsung Notes’ PDF export command to create a PDF for filing or sharing.

This method is an optical photograph, not a scan made by the printer. Reflections, shadows, a skewed camera angle or low light can reduce readability, so retake the image if text near an edge is cut off or blurred.

Why Galaxy printing settings do not solve scanning

Galaxy tablets can enable print services and manufacturer plug-ins so that content on the tablet is sent to a printer. Samsung documents a Default Print Service for many printers, with manual setup for some models. Those settings control the outward direction—tablet to printer.

A scan travels in the opposite direction, from the printer to the tablet. It requires an explicit scan feature in the manufacturer’s app or a compatible scanning protocol such as Mopria Scan. Seeing a printer in the tablet’s print list therefore does not establish that its scanner can send a file back.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The app cannot find any scanner

  • Confirm the printer is an MFP or has a scanner, not a print-only model.
  • Check that it is powered on, idle and free of paper or cover errors.
  • For Mopria Scan, connect the tablet and printer to the same Wi-Fi network and disable any guest-network isolation.
  • Verify Mopria Scan certification or the manufacturer’s Android scan support for the exact model.
  • Restart the printer, tablet and Wi-Fi router, then reopen the app and search again.

The printer appears for printing but not scanning

Printing and scanning support are independent. Look for the manufacturer’s scan-capable app or Mopria Scan certification. Do not assume the Samsung print service or a generic print plug-in includes scanner controls.

The app is installed but has no Scan option

  • Check that the selected model is the scanner-equipped variant.
  • Install the app named in the printer’s current manual rather than an older or print-only companion.
  • Review Android permissions for nearby devices and local network access.
  • Check whether the printer requires a firmware update or a direct network connection instead of a guest network.

Mopria Scan lists the printer but the job fails

  • Move the tablet and printer to the same non-guest Wi-Fi network.
  • Cancel any queued print or scan job and clear an error shown on the printer.
  • Reload the original, close and reopen Mopria Scan, then try one page from the flatbed before using the feeder.
  • If the printer remains unreliable, use the manufacturer’s app, whose controls may better match that model.

Older instructions mention Samsung Mobile Print

HP-hosted documentation describes Samsung Mobile Print scanning and faxing for supported Samsung network-printer series. That is a model-specific workflow, and current app-store availability and compatibility can vary by region and device. Verify both before relying on those instructions. A historical Samsung announcement that described wireless printing, copying, faxing and scanning does not establish current support for your tablet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The camera scan looks poor

  • Use brighter, diffuse lighting and avoid glare from the page.
  • Hold the tablet directly above the document and keep the entire page inside the frame.
  • Place the page on a contrasting, uncluttered surface.
  • Retake the image before exporting to PDF; PDF conversion cannot restore text that was out of focus or cropped.

Choosing the right route for common situations

Your situation Recommended action Reason
You have a supported MFP and need several pages Use the manufacturer app or Mopria Scan with the feeder The printer handles page alignment and multi-page input more efficiently
Your MFP is Mopria certified but the maker app is unavailable Use Mopria Scan on the same Wi-Fi network It provides a vendor-independent Android discovery path for compatible devices
The printer is visible for printing only Check for a separate scan app; otherwise use Camera Print discovery does not imply scan support
You need one page immediately Use Camera, then Gallery or Samsung Notes No printer setup is needed
You need a PDF for email or records Use the printer app’s export controls, or export a Camera image through Samsung Notes The available format depends on the app; Samsung documents PDF export through Notes for the camera workflow

Practical quality and privacy checks

  • Preview every page before sending it. Check that signatures, small type and page edges are legible.
  • For a multi-page document, maintain a consistent orientation and naming scheme so pages remain in order.
  • Delete temporary photos or scans from Gallery or the app when the document contains personal, financial or medical information and you no longer need the copies.
  • On a shared office network, confirm that the intended printer is selected before scanning confidential pages.
  • Keep the printer and tablet on trusted networks and install app updates from the official app store or manufacturer support channel.

Bottom line

For a true printer scan, identify the exact scanner model, install its supported Android app, and use its Scan function; Mopria Scan is an alternative when the MFP is certified and both devices share Wi-Fi. If no compatible route exists, the Galaxy tablet’s Camera app can capture the document, save it in Gallery and export it as a PDF through Samsung Notes.
