ClamTk gives Linux users a graphical way to scan selected files and folders for malware at no cost. It is a frontend for the ClamAV scanning engine, not a promise of always-on protection—and whether it is the easiest option depends on your Linux distribution and what you need to scan.
What ClamTk does—and what it does not
ClamTk is a graphical frontend for ClamAV. You can select a file or directory and request an on-demand scan, rather than working at a terminal. The Ubuntu Jammy package manual describes it as a lightweight scanner and documents scanning a supplied file or directory: ClamTk manual for Ubuntu Jammy.
ClamTk’s project describes the app as a simple way to use ClamAV and directs users who need more extensive options to the command line: ClamTk project. The documented GUI workflow is a scan you start when needed; it does not establish that ClamTk continuously monitors your PC.
How to scan a file or folder
-
Install ClamTk and its ClamAV scanning engine using the package method for your distribution and release.
#1 Best Overall
-
Open ClamTk and choose the file or directory you want to check using the app’s scan controls.
-
Start the scan and review the result in the application. If you need command-line options or a workflow for repeated scanning, use ClamAV’s command-line tools or daemon instead.
ClamAV’s documentation describes scanning for viruses, worms, trojans and other malware, including some threats in documents and mobile malware. That is the project’s description of supported scope, not an independent measure of detection effectiveness: ClamAV documentation.
Installing it on Ubuntu
Ubuntu community guidance identifies clamav for manual scanning, clamav-daemon for automated use and clamtk as a graphical option. These package names and instructions are Ubuntu-specific; other distributions may use different names or availability. Consult the documentation or package manager for your release before installing: Ubuntu Community Help: ClamAV.
The Ubuntu Jammy manual lists ClamTk version 6.07-1 for that release. That version should not be assumed to apply to other Ubuntu releases or Linux distributions. The ClamAV project documentation recommends 5 GiB of free space for installation; treat that as the project’s recommendation, not a universal minimum for every distribution package or system.
When the command line or daemon makes more sense
| Option | How you use it | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| ClamTk | Graphical, on-demand scan of a selected file or directory | You want to start a scan without using terminal commands |
clamscan |
Command-line scan of files and directories | You prefer terminal use or need command-line options |
| ClamAV daemon | Daemon-based use for more regular scanning workflows | You need an automated workflow, such as scanning incoming email |
Ubuntu documents clamscan as a command-line scanner for files and directories: clamscan manual for Ubuntu Jammy. Its community guidance distinguishes a scanner launched for a requested scan from the daemon approach used for more regular work, and notes that database updates can be downloaded automatically: Ubuntu Community Help: ClamAV. A daemon workflow is a ClamAV option; it should not be confused with ClamTk’s documented on-demand GUI behavior.

Do you need antivirus on Linux?
Ubuntu’s user guide says antivirus software exists for Linux but most users probably do not need it: Ubuntu help: antivirus software. A scan can still be useful when you want to check a particular file, especially one you may pass to someone using another operating system. Ubuntu’s guidance recognizes that shared files can pose a risk to other people’s computers: Ubuntu help: antivirus software.

ClamTk is therefore a straightforward free option for occasional, user-started scans—not a substitute for a documented real-time protection setup, and not a guarantee that a file is safe. There is no basis here for ranking it above other scanners by detection rate or speed.
