On Windows, connect the SD card, open File Explorer, right-click its drive, and choose Scan or Scan with Microsoft Defender. On a Mac, built-in malware protections work automatically, but Apple’s documentation does not describe a manual command that scans every file on an SD card.
Scan an SD card on Windows
- Insert the card into your computer. If it does not have a compatible SD slot, you can connect the card with a USB SD card reader. The reader provides a connection, not malware protection.
- Open File Explorer and locate the SD card under This PC or in the navigation pane.
- Right-click the card’s drive and select Scan or Scan with [your security software’s name]. Microsoft documents scanning removable drives this way: Microsoft’s antivirus and antimalware FAQ.
- Wait for the scan to finish. If the security software reports a threat, follow its instructions to quarantine or remove the detected item.
If the menu does not offer a scan command, scan a selected file or folder with Windows Security. In Windows 11, you may need to choose Show more options in the right-click menu to see Scan with Microsoft Defender. See Microsoft’s instructions for scanning an item with Windows Security.
Microsoft also documents a full-scan setting to include removable drives. The location of that setting can vary with Windows and security-software versions, so use the current Windows Security interface or your security product’s help if you need to locate it.
What to do on a Mac
macOS includes Gatekeeper, notarization, and XProtect. Apple says XProtect automatically detects and blocks known malware, including checks when an app is first launched, when it changes in the file system, or when XProtect signatures are updated. That is not the same as a user-started manual scan of every file on an SD card. Apple explains these protections in Protecting against malware in macOS.

Keep macOS up to date, use trusted sources for software, and avoid opening unexpected files or apps. Apple’s practical guidance is in Ways to avoid malware and harmful apps on Mac.
Disk Utility’s First Aid checks and repairs certain disk-formatting or directory-structure problems; it is not a malware scanner. On some Mac laptops with Apple silicon, connecting a new or unknown SD card may prompt you to approve the accessory before the Mac recognizes it. Handle an unfamiliar card carefully
Do not open unfamiliar files before scanning the card. Microsoft warns that malware can spread through removable drives and advises scanning an unknown removable device that has been connected to a PC: How malware can infect your PC.
A clean scan does not prove that a card is free of malware. Detection depends on the security product, its definitions, permissions, and supported file types; no perfect detection guarantee is established by the cited guidance.

If the scan finds a threat or cannot finish
- Use the security software’s quarantine or removal instructions. Do not disable protection or open a flagged file to investigate.
- If important files remain and the scanner cannot clean the card, preserve a backup if it is safe to do so and seek trusted technical help before formatting.
- Formatting erases the card’s contents. It is not a malware diagnosis, so do not use it as a substitute for scanning or for deciding whether a detection is genuine.
