To scan a QR code with Google, open a new tab in Chrome, tap Google Lens in the search bar, aim the camera at the code, then tap the link that appears. On a Pixel phone, you can also scan with the Camera app or the QR scanner in Quick Settings.
Scan a QR code with Google Lens in Chrome
Google documents this method for Chrome on Android, iPhone, and iPad. It uses the camera to recognize the code; you do not need to take a photo first.
Android
- Open Chrome and start a new tab.
- Tap Google Lens in the search bar, then choose Search with your camera.
- Position the complete QR code inside the on-screen box.
- When the link appears, tap it to open the destination.
These steps are for QR codes. Google gives separate instructions for barcodes: after framing a barcode, tap Search and swipe up to see results. A QR code should not be expected to produce the same product-search results.
iPhone or iPad
- Open Chrome and start a new tab.
- Tap Google Lens in the search bar.
- Place the QR code inside the highlighted box.
- Tap the link displayed when Chrome recognizes the code.
Google’s note about making Google the default search engine on iPhone or iPad relates to searching a page’s contents; it is not presented as a requirement for scanning a QR code with the camera.

Scan a QR code with a Pixel phone
On Pixel, the Camera app can recognize a QR code and show a link without taking a picture. Google also provides a dedicated QR scanner in Quick Settings.
Use the Camera app
- Open Camera and make sure Camera scan suggestions is enabled in Camera settings.
- Point the camera at the full QR code and hold the phone steady.
- Wait for the bubble or link to appear, then tap it.
Use Quick Settings
- Open Quick Settings.
- Tap Scan QR code.
- If the button is not visible, check the additional buttons or use the edit control to add it.
- Frame the code and tap the displayed link.
Which scanning method should you use?

Google’s documented Camera and Quick Settings instructions here are Pixel-specific. Other phone makers may offer camera scanning, but these instructions do not establish the steps or availability on every Android device.

Fix a QR code that will not scan
For Pixel Camera scanning, Google recommends checking the framing and camera conditions:

- Improve the lighting and avoid shadows or glare.
- Clean a smudged camera lens with a soft cloth.
- Move closer while keeping the entire code visible.
For a QR code shown during Google Account sign-in, Google also suggests increasing the brightness of the screen displaying the code, holding the phone upright, and trying a closer or farther distance while keeping the code in the viewfinder. These are sign-in troubleshooting steps, not universal OS requirements for all QR scanners.

For that Google Account sign-in flow specifically, Google’s guidance says built-in Camera scanning requires Android 9 or higher, or iOS 11 or higher on an iPhone or iPad. If scanning a sign-in code still fails, use Try another way or the account-verification link from a device where you are already signed in, as applicable to the sign-in screen.
