A Scag mower that will not start falls into one of two useful diagnostic branches: the engine does not crank at all, or it cranks but never fires. Identify that symptom first, then check the model’s starting controls, fuel and choke settings, battery connections, wiring and safety interlocks before replacing parts. Scag’s troubleshooting table for its Field and Brush Mower lists these as possible causes, but the exact procedure and parts depend on your mower’s model, serial range and engine.
Start with the symptom: no crank or no ignition?
Turn the key or use the starting control only long enough to observe what happens. Do not repeatedly hold the control while you are still diagnosing. The sound determines which checks make sense:
| What you observe | Likely diagnostic branch | Begin with |
|---|---|---|
| No sound and no engine movement | No-crank electrical, control or interlock problem | Correct starting positions, battery terminals, battery state, visible wiring and interlock conditions |
| A click or very slow cranking | Battery, connection, wiring, solenoid or starter possibility | Battery and terminal inspection, then model-specific electrical diagnosis |
| Normal cranking but no combustion | Fuel, choke, fuel filter or ignition possibility | Fuel condition and level, choke and fuel-valve position, then the engine manual’s plug and filter checks |
| Starts and then stops | Operating-condition or fuel-supply issue | Use the exact model manual; the Field and Brush manual lists the safety bar, choke, low fuel and fuel valve for this symptom |
These are troubleshooting categories, not a diagnosis. Scag has several mower families and engines, so a check that applies to a Field and Brush Mower may not match a zero-turn, walk-behind or stand-on model.

Make the mower safe before inspecting anything
Do not work around a running or recently moving mower. Before touching a terminal, wire, plug or fuel component:
- Park on a stable, level surface and disengage the cutting system.
- Stop the engine, remove the key and wait until all movement has stopped.
- Follow the safety and starting instructions in the manual for your model and engine.
- For repair work, follow Scag’s maintenance precaution: “Disconnect battery or remove spark-plug wire before making any repairs.”
- If disconnecting the battery, remove the negative terminal first and the positive terminal last. Reconnect the positive terminal first and the negative terminal last.
Keep hands, clothing and tools away from belts, blades and moving linkages. Never defeat, jumper or otherwise bypass an operator-presence or other safety interlock to make the engine run. If you cannot identify a safe isolation procedure for your model, stop and use a Scag dealer or qualified small-engine technician.
Fuel work needs additional care. Work outdoors or in a well-ventilated area, keep fuel away from flames, sparks and hot surfaces, and clean any spill before attempting a start. Do not remove a fuel line or filter until the engine manual explains how to shut off or contain fuel on that engine. Dispose of old or contaminated fuel through an approved local route rather than pouring it on the ground.
Confirm the model before changing a part
Find the mower’s model and serial information and identify the engine model. Scag’s official Product Manuals & Parts List lookup is organized by product and serial or model ranges. Use the matching operator’s manual and parts list before buying a battery, fuel filter or spark plug. The available troubleshooting information does not establish one plug, gap, filter, battery specification or part number that fits every Scag mower.
Write down the exact symptoms, whether the machine was stored with fuel, and any recent maintenance. That information helps a dealer distinguish a control or interlock issue from an engine or fuel-system fault. Keep the engine brand and model with the mower identification; the engine manufacturer’s manual controls spark-plug specifications, gap and many fuel-system procedures.
If the engine does not crank
Scag’s Field and Brush Mower troubleshooting table lists a discharged or dead battery, dirty battery terminals, loose or broken wiring, a faulty solenoid or starter, and a faulty safety interlock among the possible causes of an engine that will not turn over or start.
1. Recheck the required starting conditions
Set the controls exactly as your model manual shows. The same table identifies an engaged PTO as a possible reason for a no-start condition and lists disengaging the PTO as the remedy. Check that the cutting-system control is fully disengaged and that any seat, brake, neutral or operator-presence requirements specified for your model are satisfied. Do not assume the positions are identical across Scag product families.
Recommended Free Tools
Make one deliberate starting attempt after correcting the control positions. If the engine is still completely silent, continue with electrical and interlock checks rather than repeatedly cycling the key. A control that feels in position can still have a loose linkage or switch, which requires the model’s wiring diagram and service procedure.
2. Inspect the battery terminals and visible cables
With the mower safely isolated, look for terminals that are dirty, loose or visibly damaged. Check the accessible cable ends and wiring for a loose connection, broken conductor or obvious abrasion. Clean and tighten only according to the mower manual; do not pull on a cable to test it. Scag’s table calls for battery maintenance and checking and tightening wiring when these conditions are found.

Look at both ends of each accessible cable, not just the battery post. Corrosion or looseness at a ground connection can produce the same symptom as a weak battery. Do not remove protective covers or disturb harnesses you cannot identify. Photographing the routing before any approved disconnection can help prevent an incorrect reconnection.
3. Consider battery charge and condition
A discharged or dead battery can produce silence, a click or slow cranking. The listed remedies are recharging or replacing the battery, but the correct battery type and charging procedure are model-specific. Follow the battery and charger instructions in your manual rather than applying a generic voltage threshold. If the battery repeatedly loses charge after an appropriate recharge, have the charging and starting circuits tested instead of repeatedly replacing batteries.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA charger is not a substitute for diagnosis. If the battery becomes hot, swollen, cracked or leaks, stop using it and follow the manufacturer’s replacement and disposal guidance. Do not connect a charger or jump source in a way the mower or battery manual does not approve.
4. Treat a solenoid, starter or interlock fault as an escalation
A failed starter or solenoid and a faulty safety interlock are explicitly listed possibilities. The Field and Brush manual directs the owner to a dealer for those faults. Electrical diagnosis can require a wiring diagram and model-specific tests; do not bridge the solenoid or bypass an interlock as a shortcut. A qualified technician can verify the circuit without defeating the safety system.
If the mower clicks once but the battery and terminals are in the condition specified by the manual, or if it cranks only intermittently, stop guessing at parts. A technician can distinguish a control signal problem from a solenoid, starter or cable fault using the correct diagram. The cited Scag material does not provide one universal test voltage or resistance value, so generic online thresholds should not be treated as a fit for every model.
If the engine cranks but will not start
When the starter turns the engine at a normal speed but it never catches, move to fuel and ignition checks. Scag’s troubleshooting table names no fuel, flooding, a clogged fuel filter, water in fuel, stale gas, and a faulty, fouled or incorrectly gapped spark plug as possible causes.

Separate a fuel-supply clue from an ignition clue without dismantling unnecessary components. A machine that was recently refueled or stored for a long period raises fuel-condition questions; a plug that is visibly fouled raises an ignition or fueling question. Neither observation proves the failed part, so use the engine manual’s next test rather than replacing several components at once.
Check fuel quantity, age and contamination
Verify that there is fuel in the tank. If the machine has a fuel valve, confirm that it is in the position specified by the manual. Scag’s table recommends refilling after the engine has cooled when fuel is empty, and draining affected fuel and adding fresh fuel when water or old gas is suspected.
Do not diagnose contaminated fuel by adding more fuel on top of it. If you see water or the fuel is clearly stale, follow the engine manual’s draining and disposal procedure. Work outdoors or in a well-ventilated area, keep fuel away from ignition sources, and use only the fuel grade and storage guidance specified for that engine.

If the tank has fuel but the engine behaves as though it is empty, do not assume the tank itself is the problem. A closed fuel valve, restricted filter or contaminated fuel can prevent delivery. Check only the components and shutoff steps that your model and engine manuals describe.
Correct a flooded engine without guessing
The Field and Brush table lists flooding and recommends disengaging the choke. Use the starting and choke sequence in your engine manual; different engines can require different throttle or choke positions. Allow the engine to clear according to those instructions rather than repeatedly pumping controls or continuing long cranking attempts.
Repeated attempts with the choke engaged can worsen flooding and drain the battery. If the manual gives a specific clearing sequence, follow it exactly. If it does not, do not invent one or hold the throttle in an unsafe position; have the engine serviced.
Inspect the fuel filter only as the manual permits
A clogged fuel filter is one of the source-listed possibilities, with replacement given as the remedy. The filter’s location, shutoff procedure and replacement part vary by engine. Replace it only after confirming the engine and part number in the matching Scag parts list or engine manual. Prevent dirt from entering an open fuel line and dispose of spilled fuel safely.
A new filter cannot correct stale fuel, a closed valve or a wiring problem. Keep the old part and note the direction of flow if the manual asks you to replace it; do not rely on a universal appearance or size to identify the correct filter.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Check the spark plug against the engine manual
Scag identifies a faulty, fouled or incorrectly gapped plug as another possible cause. Remove or inspect it only after disconnecting the battery or spark-plug wire as directed for repair. Clean and gap it, or replace it, according to the engine manufacturer’s specification. The correct plug and gap are not universal across Scag mowers, so a search for a “Scag mower replacement spark plug” is only a starting category; confirm the engine model and exact specification before ordering.
If the plug is wet, heavily fouled or repeatedly becomes so, do not assume the plug alone is the root cause. Follow the engine manual’s further fuel and ignition tests or seek professional service. Do not perform a spark test unless the engine manual gives a safe procedure and you can isolate fuel vapors and moving parts.
When it starts and then stalls
A start-then-stop symptom is different from a starter that never turns. The Field and Brush manual separately lists releasing the safety bar, incorrect choke position, low fuel and fuel-valve position for an engine that will not stay running while operating. Those entries apply to that manual’s mower category, not automatically to every Scag model.
Check that you are maintaining the operator-presence control and other positions required by your model, that fuel is available, and that the choke is set as the engine manual directs after starting. If the engine stops when a control is released, do not tie or hold that control down; have the safety system inspected.

If it stalls after warming up, note the timing and whether moving a control triggers the stop. That observation is useful to a technician, but it does not establish a universal cause. Use the model-specific manual rather than borrowing a procedure from a different Scag family.
Use the troubleshooting sequence in this order
This sequence limits unnecessary part replacement while keeping the checks within the information established by Scag’s manuals:
- Identify the mower and engine model, serial range and the exact sound or symptom.
- Make the mower safe: stop the engine, remove the key, wait for movement to stop and isolate the battery or spark-plug wire before repair.
- Set PTO, brake, neutral, seat and operator-presence controls as the model manual requires.
- Verify fuel level, fuel-valve position if fitted, and choke position.
- If there is no crank or only a click, inspect battery terminals, visible wiring and battery charge condition.
- If it cranks but does not fire, evaluate stale or water-contaminated fuel, then use the engine manual for filter and spark-plug inspection.
- Use the matching parts list before ordering any replacement.
- Stop and arrange qualified service when the suspected cause is an interlock, starter, solenoid, wiring fault or an internal engine problem that the manual does not explain.
After each permitted correction, make only one controlled starting attempt and record the result. A change from silence to clicking, or from cranking to briefly firing, is useful evidence. Avoid changing fuel, plug, battery and wiring at the same time because you will lose track of which action affected the symptom.
Cranking time: follow your own manual
One older Scag operator’s manual says not to hold the key in START for more than 15 seconds and to return it to OFF for at least 60 seconds before trying again. That instruction is model- and manual-specific and comes from an older document. Apply it only when your mower’s own manual gives the same limit; do not treat it as a universal current rule for every Scag machine. Excessive repeated cranking can drain the battery and complicate diagnosis.
Parts and tools: what is justified by the symptom?
| Item | Why it may be relevant | What must be confirmed first |
|---|---|---|
| Battery | The troubleshooting table lists a discharged or dead battery. | Battery type, capacity, terminal arrangement and charging procedure for the exact model |
| Battery-terminal service | Dirty terminals are listed as a possible no-crank cause. | Safe disconnect order and the model’s cleaning instructions |
| Fuel filter | A clogged filter is listed when the engine cranks but does not start. | Engine model, filter part number and fuel-line shutoff procedure |
| Spark plug | A faulty, fouled or incorrectly gapped plug is listed as a possible ignition cause. | Engine manufacturer’s plug specification and gap |
| Multimeter | Could assist a trained person with electrical diagnosis. | A model-specific test procedure; the cited Scag material does not provide universal test thresholds |
Buying a generic replacement before confirming compatibility can create a second fault or mask the original one. The manual and parts lookup are the authority for fit; the troubleshooting table supplies possibilities, not proof that a particular component has failed.
Compare any replacement by the engine or mower compatibility, the OEM part number in the matching parts list, and the evidence supporting replacement. A battery that physically fits may still have the wrong specification or terminal arrangement. A plug that threads into the engine may still have the wrong heat range or gap. A filter that looks similar may not match the fuel system.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When professional service is the right fix
Arrange a Scag dealer or qualified small-engine technician when the mower still will not crank after the documented operating, terminal and battery checks; when a safety interlock appears faulty; when starter, solenoid or wiring diagnosis is required; or when fuel and plug checks do not resolve a cranks-but-will-not-start condition. Bring the model and serial information, engine model, symptom branch, and the checks already completed.
Professional escalation is also appropriate when you smell spilled fuel, see damaged wiring, cannot safely isolate the electrical system, or are unsure how to remove a plug or fuel component. A dealer can use the correct wiring diagram and service procedure instead of relying on a generic test or an unsafe bypass.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Scag mower make no sound when I turn the key?
Start with the model’s required PTO, brake, neutral, seat and operator-presence positions. Then safely inspect dirty or loose battery terminals, battery condition and visible wiring. A failed safety interlock, solenoid or starter is also possible; do not bypass it, and use a dealer when model-specific electrical testing is needed.
What if the Scag engine clicks but does not turn over?
A discharged battery, poor terminal connection, wiring fault, solenoid or starter can produce clicking or slow cranking. Follow the battery and charger instructions for your model, inspect accessible connections safely, and stop before bridging the solenoid or applying generic test thresholds.
My Scag cranks normally but will not fire. What should I check?
Verify fuel level, fuel-valve position if fitted and choke position. Scag’s Field and Brush troubleshooting table also lists stale or water-contaminated fuel, a clogged filter and a faulty, fouled or incorrectly gapped spark plug. Use the engine manual for inspection, draining and replacement procedures.
Can I use any spark plug labeled for a Scag mower?
No. Scag mowers use different engines. Confirm the engine model, exact plug specification and gap in the engine manual or matching Scag parts list before cleaning, gapping or ordering a plug.
How do I fix a flooded Scag mower?
The Field and Brush table lists disengaging the choke as the remedy. Follow your own engine manual’s clearing and starting sequence; do not repeatedly pump controls or continue long cranking attempts.
Why does my mower start and then stop?
For the Field and Brush category, Scag lists releasing the safety bar, incorrect choke position, low fuel and fuel-valve position. Check the exact model manual. Never tie down or defeat an operator-presence control to keep the engine running.
Should I replace the battery first?
Not automatically. Confirm the symptom, inspect terminals and visible wiring, and follow the model’s charging instructions. Replacing a battery without checking a loose cable, charging fault or interlock can leave the original problem unresolved.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →When should I call a Scag dealer?
Call when an interlock, starter, solenoid or wiring fault is suspected; when safe isolation or fuel work is unclear; or when documented fuel, terminal, battery, filter and plug checks do not resolve the problem. Provide the mower and engine identification and your observations.
The Bottom Line
First decide whether the Scag mower is not cranking or is cranking without firing. Make it safe, follow the model-specific starting positions, then check fuel, choke, battery connections and the engine manual’s filter and plug guidance. Do not bypass safety interlocks or buy a universal part; use the matching Scag manual and parts list, and escalate electrical or unresolved engine faults to a qualified technician.
