Google Play is offering selected retailer gift cards at a discount through October 19, 2026, according to The Verge’s October 14 report. The advertised examples are 20% off a $50 Barnes & Noble gift card, 20% off a $100 REI gift card and 10% off a $100 GameStop gift card. You need a Google Play account, but you do not need an Android phone or tablet.
What the promotion discounts
This is not a storewide sale on merchandise at REI, Barnes & Noble or GameStop. The discount applies to specific gift-card products purchased through the Google Play store. The reported offers are:

These are the examples reported on October 14, 2026; Google Play can change or remove inventory before the stated end date. A 20% discount is the headline saving for the Barnes & Noble and REI denominations, while the listed GameStop offer is 10%.

How to claim a discounted card
- Sign in to a Google Play account. The account requirement applies even if you are shopping from a computer or another non-Android device.
- Open the Google Play gift-card section and locate the retailer card. Check the denomination and discount shown at checkout rather than assuming every value qualifies.
- Confirm the country and currency. Google says gift cards are country- and currency-specific. Your Google Play account region and the purchase region must match the market for which the card was issued.
- Pay the discounted amount and keep the delivery details. Depending on the market, the product may be a digital gift code or a physical card. Follow the redemption instructions supplied with the purchase.
- Redeem with the retailer under its own terms. A Google Play account gets you the discounted purchase; it does not replace the retailer’s rules for using the resulting card.
Do you need an Android phone?
No. The promotion report says an Android phone or tablet is not required. You do need a Google Play account, and Google’s gift-card documentation says availability and redemption depend on the card’s country and currency. If the offer does not appear, check that your account region, payment setup and purchase location correspond to the market where the card is sold.

What to know about each retailer card
REI gift card
REI states that its gift cards do not expire and do not carry fees. They can be purchased through REI.com, REI stores nationwide, by phone and from select authorized resellers. The card cannot be used for a previous purchase, an exchange, a return label, passes or tickets, or another gift card. Buying a gift card also does not earn the REI Co-op Member Reward. Those restrictions still apply when the card was obtained through a discounted channel.
Barnes & Noble gift card
Barnes & Noble’s app catalog includes books, children’s books, magazines, manga, CDs, vinyl, DVDs, Blu-ray, toys, games, home and gift items, and gift cards. The promotion concerns the gift card’s purchase price; verify the card’s delivery method and redemption instructions at checkout before paying.

GameStop gift card
The reported GameStop example is a $100 card discounted by 10%, not 20%. Because retailer terms can differ, review the card’s conditions and any regional limitations before completing the order.

Deadline and availability
The reported promotion runs through October 19, 2026. That is a stated end date, not a guarantee that every denomination will remain in stock until then. If you want one of the 20%-off cards, check the listing and final price before purchasing rather than waiting until the last day.

Checks to make before paying
- Correct denomination: The reported 20% examples are $50 for Barnes & Noble and $100 for REI; other values may not receive the same discount.
- Correct currency and region: Google says a card must be redeemed in the country and currency where it was purchased.
- Final checkout total: Make sure the reduction is visible before submitting payment.
- Retailer exclusions: For REI, the card cannot purchase another gift card and does not generate the Co-op Member Reward.
- Timing: Save the digital code or physical-card information securely and use it according to the retailer’s instructions.
Is the deal worthwhile?
If you already plan to spend at one of the participating retailers, the REI and Barnes & Noble examples reduce the cost by one-fifth, making them the strongest reported offers. The GameStop example saves one-tenth. The practical trade-off is flexibility: you exchange cash for a retailer-specific balance, and regional rules can prevent redemption outside the issuing market. Buy only an amount you expect to use before the promotion or your own spending plans change.
