Choose HEIC if your devices and apps support it and you want to save storage; choose JPG when you need a photo to open reliably on devices or software you don’t control. Apple says HEIF/HEVC images can use less storage than JPEG while preserving the same visual quality, but that is Apple’s qualitative guidance—not a guaranteed file-size saving for every photo. Compatibility depends on the receiving device, operating system, and app.
What HEIC and JPG mean
HEIF is the broader High Efficiency Image File Format family. HEIC is Apple’s file type for HEIF images compressed using HEVC. HEVC is the compression method; in this comparison, HEIC refers to still-image files, not video.
JPG and JPEG refer to the same widely used photo format. JPG is a common file extension for JPEG/JFIF images. Apple describes HEIF/HEVC as offering better compression than JPEG/H.264 while preserving the same visual quality. That comparison describes Apple’s guidance for its supported media workflows, not a universal independent benchmark.

HEIC vs JPG at a glance
| What matters | HEIC | JPG |
|---|---|---|
| Storage | Apple says HEIF/HEVC can use less storage than JPEG/H.264 at the same visual quality. No fixed saving applies to every image. | Typically less storage-efficient than HEIC under Apple’s stated comparison, but the actual file size depends on the image and encoding. |
| Compatibility | Supported by Apple platforms starting with iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra 10.13, as well as iPadOS and visionOS. Third-party apps and other platforms may require additional support. | Broader compatibility makes it the safer choice when you don’t know what software will receive the image. |
| Best fit | Capture and editing workflows where the devices, apps, and sharing route support HEIF. | Sending, uploading, or archiving images for recipients or services with uncertain format support. |
| Conversion | Can be exported to JPEG or PNG on a Mac using Photos or Preview. Some Apple sharing routes may convert automatically when the destination does not support HEIF. | Often needs no conversion for everyday sharing, though a workflow may still require another format. |
Apple’s listed minimum platform versions indicate when HEIF support was introduced; they do not guarantee that every app on those systems can open every HEIC file. Apple’s developer guidance also describes HEIF/HEVC capture on supported devices as offering improved image quality at smaller file sizes, but does not establish a universal file-size ratio.

Choose based on where the photo needs to go
Use HEIC for a supported Apple workflow
If you capture and manage photos on supported Apple devices and the apps you use can open HEIC, it is a reasonable default when storage efficiency matters. Check the entire path—not just the camera: the editing app, cloud service, computer, and recipient’s software all need to handle the file or convert it.
Use JPG when compatibility is uncertain
JPG is the practical choice for sending a photo to someone whose device or software you do not know, or for uploading to a service whose HEIC support is unclear. Apple characterizes JPEG as an older format with broader compatibility. Some sharing or transfer routes can convert a HEIC image automatically, but behavior depends on the device settings and the route used.

Keep HEIC when the original matters
If you need to preserve the original image file, check what a transfer or sharing action does before sending. An automatic conversion may produce a JPEG rather than pass along the HEIC original. When the format matters, export or share deliberately and verify the resulting file.
Set iPhone or iPad camera capture to HEIC or JPG
On supported iPhone and iPad devices, the camera format is controlled in Settings. The option is available only on devices that can capture in HEIF/HEVC.

Convert HEIC to JPG when a destination needs it
Export from Photos or Preview on a Mac
Apple documents exporting an HEIF image from Photos or Preview to a format such as JPEG or PNG. Open the image in either app and use its export option to choose JPEG. The exported file is a converted copy; retain the original HEIC if you need it.

Check automatic conversion when sharing
Apple says non-iCloud sharing methods such as AirDrop, Messages, or email may automatically send a JPEG when the destination does not support HEIF. Microsoft also notes that many devices automatically convert HEIC images to a more common format when transferring or emailing them. Whether conversion occurs depends on the device, settings, and sharing workflow, so verify the file format if preserving the original is important.
Why HEIC may not open on Windows
Windows support depends on the app and available format support. Microsoft’s Photos troubleshooting guidance says the app may display a message that an extension is needed to use HEIF files. Microsoft also notes that downloaded HEIF files on non-Apple devices may require additional apps or codecs.

OneDrive can preview HEIF files on its website, according to Microsoft, but that does not mean a downloaded file will open in every Windows app. If a file will not open, try viewing it in a service or app that supports HEIF, add the required format support as directed by Microsoft, or convert/export it to JPEG on a device with HEIF support.
The practical rule
Use HEIC when your complete workflow supports it and storage efficiency matters; use JPG when compatibility is uncertain.
