“Save a photo” can mean organizing a picture already on your Galaxy, downloading one from OneDrive, copying it to external storage, or backing up new photos automatically. Use Gallery to organize photos on the phone, My Files to copy or move files, and a cloud app to download or back up photos. Menu names and locations vary by Galaxy model and software version.
Put a photo in a Gallery album
Use Gallery when the image is already on your phone and you want to organize it. Copying keeps the original placement; moving relocates the photo to the album you choose.
- Open Gallery and find the image under Pictures.
- Touch and hold the photo to select it. Select more photos if needed.
- Tap More, then choose Copy to album to keep the original placement or Move to album to relocate the image.
- Choose a destination album. To create one, open Albums and use the add or create control.

Download a photo from OneDrive to your phone
Downloading puts a selected OneDrive file on the device; it is different from backing up new camera photos. You can use this method to retrieve images that were uploaded previously.

- Open the OneDrive app and open its Gallery tab or the folder containing the photo.
- Select the photo. To select several, touch and hold the first, then select the others.
- Tap Download. The downloaded item is available with the phone’s other photos.
Samsung says its Gallery–OneDrive sync service ended on September 30, 2026. Previously synced files remain in OneDrive and can still be downloaded; future photos no longer sync through that discontinued Gallery integration. Copy or move camera photos with My Files
Use My Files when you want to work with the actual file, such as copying it to a cloud destination or external storage. Samsung’s Galaxy S26 example uses the camera folder below; paths and available destinations may vary.

- Open My Files.
- Go to Internal storage > DCIM > Camera.
- Select the photo or photos, then choose Copy or Move.
- Choose the destination and confirm the action.
Copy leaves the phone original in place and creates another copy. Move relocates the file; in Samsung’s example, moving it to OneDrive removes it from internal storage. Choose Copy if you want to keep a phone copy as well as an off-device copy. Samsung My Files instructions for transferring photos.

For ongoing protection, enable backup in the app and account you intend to use. Samsung documents Camera Backup in OneDrive and a separate backup switch in Google Photos; neither is the same as the discontinued Gallery–OneDrive sync.

OneDrive Camera Backup
Open OneDrive and enable Camera Backup, grant access to photos and videos, and choose the upload options available in the app. Samsung’s guide describes Wi-Fi-only uploading and an option to include videos. Confirm the OneDrive account shown before enabling upload.
Google Photos backup
Open Google Photos, turn on backup, and confirm the Google account. Available settings include Original quality and Storage saver; Google Photos also provides mobile-data options. Video uploads use more storage than photos.

In either app, check the backup status and remaining cloud quota. Samsung warns that uploads can stop when the provider’s storage is full; additional storage may require payment. Choose backup rather than relying on sync alone
Sync keeps data on connected devices aligned, so changes made in one place can appear on the others. A backup is a safety copy intended to help protect data and restore it. Because synced changes or deletions can propagate, do not assume that syncing alone is an independent archive. Samsung explains the distinction in its guide to syncing and backup.

Use external storage when you need another copy
If you want an offline copy or need room to download photo originals, Samsung says a storage stick or hard drive can be connected as an alternative. Support depends on the exact Galaxy model, connector, and storage device, so check compatibility before buying an accessory; Samsung does not establish universal compatibility for every phone or drive. Recover a deleted OneDrive photo
Samsung says deleted Gallery files in the OneDrive Recycle bin remain there for 93 days. This period applies to the OneDrive recovery guidance for Gallery files and should not be assumed for Google Photos or every deletion scenario. Check the relevant service’s current recovery options before relying on a retention period. Samsung OneDrive recovery instructions.
