WhatsApp Web does not provide a built-in HTML, CSV, or Markdown export. To create one of those formats in a browser, use a third-party Chrome extension such as WA Folders: install it, open the conversation in WhatsApp Web, and export from the extension panel. The resulting file is built from messages currently visible in that open conversation, so it is not proof of a complete historical archive. WhatsApp’s supported export workflow is on Android and iOS and produces a text file, not HTML, CSV, or Markdown.
Which WhatsApp export method fits your goal?
There are two different workflows that are often confused. A browser extension can offer the exact file formats in this title, while WhatsApp’s own export feature is a mobile function with different output and limitations.

Choose the first method when you specifically need a readable web page, spreadsheet rows, or portable Markdown notes from a browser conversation. Choose the mobile export when you need WhatsApp’s own supported process or want to include media. Treat either file as an export, not as a restorable WhatsApp backup.
Export one WhatsApp Web chat with WA Folders
WA Folders is an independent Chrome extension. Its Chrome Web Store listing was version 1.0.2, updated September 9, 2026, when the listing was reviewed. Labels, available plans, and panel placement can change, so use the current wording shown in your installation.

Before you start
- Use a desktop Chrome browser with permission to install extensions.
- Sign in to WhatsApp Web and make sure the target conversation opens normally.
- Keep the chat window large enough to display the messages you intend to capture.
- If the conversation is long, plan time to load older messages before exporting; the extension’s listing says it uses messages currently visible in the conversation.
- Decide where the exported file may be stored and who is allowed to see it. Chat messages can contain other people’s personal information.
Step-by-step browser workflow
- Open the Chrome Web Store and install WA Folders. Review the extension’s current permissions and publisher information before confirming installation.
- Open WhatsApp Web in the same Chrome profile and complete device linking if WhatsApp requests it.
- Open the single conversation you want to save. Do not start from the chat list: the export is tied to the conversation currently open in the WhatsApp Web interface.
- Load the portion of the conversation you need. WhatsApp Web may render only a window of a long history at once; scroll through the chat and allow earlier messages to appear before exporting. This step improves coverage but does not establish that every historical message will be captured.
- Open the WA Folders extension panel from Chrome’s extensions menu or its toolbar icon. The exact icon location depends on whether you have pinned it.
- Choose the export command and select HTML, CSV, or Markdown.
- Save the downloaded file to a controlled folder. Give it a descriptive name containing the conversation name and export date, while avoiding sensitive names if the folder is shared.
- Open the file with an appropriate application and check that the conversation identity, sender names, dates, and a sample from the beginning and end of the visible range look correct.
The extension listing describes the data as staying in the browser’s chrome.storage.local, with no chat upload, account, or server. Those are disclosures from the developer, not an independent security audit. The same listing says the extension is not affiliated with WhatsApp. Keep Chrome, the extension, and the exported file protected even if no upload is claimed.
Why “visible messages” changes what your export means
A WhatsApp Web conversation is not necessarily loaded in full memory. Long chats commonly present a rendered window and load more content as you scroll. WA Folders explicitly says it exports messages currently visible in the open conversation. That wording is the central qualification for this method.
- Older history: Messages that have not been rendered in the open chat may not be included. Scroll upward in stages and wait for each batch to load before exporting.
- Chat length: A short conversation that is already fully displayed is more likely to fit the extension’s stated input than a years-long thread, but the listing does not provide a completeness test or maximum message count.
- Deleted or unavailable messages: The listing does not establish recovery of deleted messages, messages removed from the device, or content unavailable to your account.
- Media: The listing names HTML, CSV, and Markdown formats but does not promise that every image, video, document, voice note, sticker, or thumbnail is embedded or downloaded.
- Dynamic loading: Leaving the chat, refreshing the page, or changing devices can alter what is currently rendered. Treat each export as a capture of a particular browser state and time.
For a business record, research dataset, dispute, or preservation task, record the chat name, export date, browser profile, and the range you deliberately loaded. Keep the original download unchanged and make a working copy for cleaning or conversion. Do not describe the result as a complete server archive unless you have separate evidence that it is complete.

HTML, CSV, or Markdown: which output should you choose?
The Chrome Web Store listing specifies the three choices but does not publish a formal schema for each. The following descriptions are practical uses of the formats, not guarantees that every version of the extension will produce identical fields or markup.

If you need both human reading and later analysis, export twice from the same loaded chat—once as HTML and once as CSV or Markdown—and label both files with the same date and scope. Two formats do not create two independent captures; they represent the same currently visible browser content.
Use WhatsApp’s native export on Android or iPhone
WhatsApp’s Help Center documents a different path for the mobile apps. It does not document a native WhatsApp Web command that exports directly to HTML, CSV, or Markdown.
- Open the conversation in WhatsApp on Android or iOS.
- On Android, tap More options; on iPhone, use the chat’s available information or sharing controls.
- Choose More, then Export chat.
- Select Without media or Include media.
- Choose a share destination, such as a mail, files, or cloud-storage app offered by your phone.
The Help Center describes the result as a text file. Including media can add separate media files, but it does not turn the text into CSV, HTML, or Markdown. If you require one of those formats, you would need to transform the text yourself after export, and any conversion should be checked against the original.
WhatsApp also states: “Your chat history can’t be re-imported because it’s a text file and not a backup file.” Keep the native export for reading or reference; do not delete a working WhatsApp backup on the assumption that this file can restore the conversation.

What to do when WhatsApp blocks export
WhatsApp’s Advanced Chat Privacy setting can prevent other participants from exporting a chat. In its April 23, 2025 announcement, WhatsApp said: “When the setting is on, you can block others from exporting chats, auto-downloading media to their phone, and using messages for AI features.” The setting can apply to individual chats and groups.
When an export command is unavailable or fails consistently, ask the chat or group administrator whether Advanced Chat Privacy is enabled. In the conversation, tap the chat name and look for Advanced Chat Privacy. If the setting is on, a browser extension cannot legitimately override that restriction. Do not attempt to bypass it; obtain the necessary permission or use an allowed record supplied by an authorized participant.
An alternative browser exporter and its stated limits
The Chrome Web Store listing for WA Chat Backup & Exporter advertises HTML and CSV along with XLSX and JSON. It does not list Markdown. The listing, shown as version 1.0.0 updated June 23, 2026, says its free option is limited to 100 recent text messages per backup and places media downloads among paid features.

It should not be presented as a solution for a complete long-term history, and its claims have not been independently tested here. Compare the current listing, permissions, and privacy policy before installing any exporter.

Privacy, consent, and handling the exported file
A chat export copies someone else’s words, contact details, attachments, and possibly sensitive information into a new file. Store it with the same care as the original conversation.
- Export only chats you are authorized to access and retain.
- Tell participants when your organization’s policy or the situation requires notice or consent before sharing messages.
- Use access controls and encryption provided by your operating system or storage service, especially for CSV files that are easy to search and copy.
- Keep the untouched original separate from redacted or analyzed copies.
- Remove temporary downloads from shared computers and review cloud-sync folders.
- Before publishing or sending a file, inspect names, phone numbers, quoted messages, thumbnails, and metadata for information that should be removed.
WhatsApp’s Terms of Service require use of its services only for legal, authorized, and acceptable purposes and prohibit impermissible or unauthorized access and collection. Third-party extensions have their own terms and privacy policies. These requirements do not decide your particular legal obligation, so check your organization’s retention, discovery, privacy, and consent rules before exporting or distributing a conversation.

The file contains only recent messages
Return to the open conversation, scroll upward in smaller stages, wait for older messages to render, and export again. If the chat is very long, create dated segments rather than claiming that one capture contains the entire history. The extension does not promise a completeness indicator.
The extension panel is empty or cannot identify the chat
Confirm that WhatsApp Web is open in the same Chrome profile where the extension is installed, that a specific conversation—not the chat list—is active, and that the page has finished loading. Refreshing can change the rendered state, so reopen the target chat and load the intended range before trying again.

CSV columns look wrong
Open the file with an application that lets you choose UTF-8 encoding and the correct delimiter. Check a message containing a comma, quotation mark, emoji, or line break. The extension listing does not specify a fixed column schema, so preserve the original file before making corrections.
HTML or Markdown does not show attachments
Do not assume that a missing image or document can be recovered from the export. The WA Folders listing specifies formats and visible messages, but not complete media capture. Keep the original WhatsApp media where you are authorized to retain it and document which files were unavailable.
Native mobile export cannot be restored
This is expected. WhatsApp identifies its text export as non-reimportable and separate from a backup. Use WhatsApp’s supported backup features for restoration, and keep the exported text for reading or external records.

- Need exactly HTML, CSV, or Markdown from a browser? Use a current browser exporter, with WA Folders as the listing that names all three formats.
- Need WhatsApp’s own supported route or optional media from a phone? Use Export chat on Android or iOS.
- Need a guaranteed complete historical record? Neither cited browser listing establishes that guarantee; do not rely on a visible-message export without a separate preservation process.
- Is export disabled? Check Advanced Chat Privacy and obtain authorization rather than bypassing the setting.
- Will another person receive the file? Confirm consent, access rights, and your retention policy first.
The safest interpretation is simple: HTML, CSV, and Markdown are browser-extension outputs assembled from what WhatsApp Web has rendered, while WhatsApp’s native mobile export is a separate text-file workflow. Select the format for the next task, preserve the original, and describe the scope honestly.
