To save iPhone photos, choose the method that matches what you mean by “save”: turn on iCloud Photos to sync your library across devices, transfer or download files to a computer, or export originals to external storage for a separate archive. iCloud Photos is convenient, but a separate copy is the better choice if you want an archive independent of the synced library.
Choose the right way to save your photos
| Your goal | Best-fit method | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| See the same library on Apple devices | Turn on iCloud Photos on each device using your Apple Account | It uses iCloud storage, and changes sync across devices. Apple explains how to access and view iCloud Photos. |
| Keep selected original files on separate physical storage | Export Unmodified Original from Photos to external storage | You need compatible storage with enough free space. Apple’s archive guidance describes the export workflow. |
| Move photos into a Mac or Windows workflow | Connect the iPhone by cable and import the photos | For Windows import with iCloud Photos enabled, download the full-resolution originals to the iPhone first. Apple’s transfer instructions cover the steps. |
| Download a few items stored in iCloud | Download from iCloud.com or use Photos | Choose unmodified originals when preserving the captured or imported file format matters. Apple lists the download options. |
| Keep a photo from someone else’s Shared Album | Save it into your personal library | Resolution and retained details depend on the operating-system version and the Shared Album item. Apple describes Shared Album saving. |
Sync your library with iCloud Photos
iCloud Photos keeps your photo library available across Apple devices, iCloud.com, and Windows PC access. The originals are stored in iCloud, and edits or deletions made on one device are reflected on others. If you enable Optimize Storage, your iPhone can keep smaller versions locally while full-size originals remain in iCloud. With Download Originals, full-size files are retained locally too. Apple says iCloud Photos uses iCloud storage, and upload time depends on the size of your library and connection speed. See Apple’s iCloud Photos access guide and setup guidance.
Sync and an independent archive serve different purposes. Photos in iCloud Photos are not duplicated in iCloud Backup, so do not treat the synced library as a separate backup. For an additional copy, export the library or selected originals to storage outside iCloud. Apple recommends keeping copies of iCloud information and separately backing up an exported Photos library. Apple’s archive instructions explain options.
Export original files to external storage
Use this method when you want selected full originals on a physical drive or other compatible external storage. The exact connector and storage compatibility depend on your iPhone and the device you connect; Apple’s guidance does not endorse a particular drive model.

- Open Photos and select the photos or videos.
- Tap Share, then choose Export Unmodified Original.
- Choose the external device under Locations, then save.
Export Unmodified Original is the relevant choice when you want the original file rather than an edited or converted version. For a broader archive, keep another copy of the exported Photos library separately. Follow Apple’s archive or copy instructions.
Transfer photos to a Mac or Windows PC
A cable transfer puts photos into a computer workflow without relying on a web download. Apple documents cable import for both Mac and PC. On Windows, use the Apple Devices app and connect the iPhone by cable. If iCloud Photos is enabled, download the full-resolution originals to the iPhone before importing them to the PC; otherwise, the full files may not be available locally for transfer. Apple notes that iCloud Photos stores original, full-resolution photos in iCloud, while an iPhone using optimized storage may not keep every full-size original on the device. See Apple’s transfer guidance.

The available import or export labels may vary with operating-system version and region.
Download photos from iCloud.com
For a small selection of cloud-stored items, sign in to iCloud.com and download them, or use the download options in Photos. Apple offers choices including unmodified originals, highest resolution, and most compatible formats. Pick unmodified originals when file fidelity matters; a more compatible format may be useful when the destination app or device has limited format support. Do not assume a JPEG or MP4 download is the original format in every case. Review Apple’s iCloud download options.

Save Shared Album photos into your library
Shared Album content is not automatically saved into your personal library. To keep an item, save or import it to Photos. A copy is not always equivalent to the original: Apple says that on systems running version 27 or later, shared photos are stored in their original formats at full resolution. On version 26 or earlier, photos are reduced to 2048 pixels on the long edge, panoramas can be up to 5400 pixels wide, and videos are delivered at up to 720p. Comments and likes are not saved with a copied item. If full resolution matters, retain the original in the personal library rather than relying on an older-version Shared Album copy. Details are in Apple’s Shared Album saving guide.
