The short answer: the PC version of Satisfactory is a first-person, open-world factory-building video game built for solo play or online co-op. Satisfactory: The Board Game keeps the planet, resources, production chains, energy management, technology progression and Space Elevator theme, but turns them into a competitive tabletop engine-building game for one to four players. The digital game lets you build and automate continuously in a large 3D world; the tabletop adaptation abstracts that long-form experience into a structured race for milestones and the Space Elevator.

The board game’s campaign was announced for Gamefound on October 13, 2026. That date describes a crowdfunding launch, not confirmed retail availability, and the publisher’s preview rulebook was still marked as a work in progress in October. Treat announced components, rules, pledge prices and playtime as provisional until the final campaign and production information are available.

What the PC game actually offers

Coffee Stain’s official description calls Satisfactory a “first-person open-world factory building game, with a dash of exploration and combat.” You land on an alien planet, search for materials, establish a production site and progressively turn raw resources into more complex parts. The first-person perspective means construction is spatial: you walk or drive through your own factory, inspect machines and physically route infrastructure.

Open-ended construction

Factories can be placed where you choose. Terrain, distance from deposits, elevation and transport routes all affect the design. You may build a compact starter line, spread production across several sites or repeatedly demolish and rebuild as your requirements grow. There is no single board edge or turn limit forcing a particular layout.

Automation and logistics

Automation is the central loop. Conveyor belts move items between machines; trucks and trains handle longer routes; and pipes carry fluids. As recipes become more involved, the challenge shifts from simply placing a machine to balancing throughput, storage, power and transport. The game’s systems continue operating while you expand, so a successful design is one that remains supplied and powered as demand increases.

Exploration, vehicles and combat

Exploration is not just a way to reveal a map. It exposes new resource locations and lets you find materials needed for later production. Coffee Stain also lists vehicles and traversal tools alongside exploration and combat. These elements make the PC version an active world to move through rather than a purely menu-driven production simulator.

Solo and online play

Steam lists single-player, online co-op and cross-platform multiplayer features. You can therefore play privately at your own pace or coordinate a shared factory with friends. The PC game does not require a winner: a group can pursue its own construction goals, redesign a bottleneck or simply continue expanding.

What the announced board game is designed to do

MOOD Publishing’s July 29, 2026 announcement describes a competitive sandbox tabletop game for one to four players. Its announced activities mirror the digital game at a higher level: explore the world to locate resources, place a factory, optimize production lines with machines and conveyor belts, balance energy production, complete projects and milestones, and finish the Space Elevator.

Engine building instead of first-person building

On the table, “building a factory” means developing an engine of cards, tiles, machines or other components according to the final rules. The preview material indicates that players will arrange production and improve their ability to make increasingly complex parts, but the work-in-progress rulebook does not establish every final component, icon or action. It is safer to think of the adaptation as a planning and optimization puzzle than as a literal miniature version of the PC construction interface.

A race with a defined endpoint

The publisher frames the experience around completing the Space Elevator and earning Employee of the Month. That gives the tabletop game a clear competitive endpoint. In contrast, the PC version can continue after any milestone, and players can set their own stopping point. A tabletop session must make progress measurable so that one player can win; the final scoring and tie-break details depend on the finished rules.

Solo is available, but the design is not announced as co-op

The announced player range is one to four, so a solo mode is planned. However, the publisher describes the game as competitive and does not present it as a cooperative campaign. Do not assume that four players share a single factory or that everyone wins together. The likely experience is several players pursuing their own production and milestone plans while competing for the same finish line, subject to changes in the final rulebook.

How exploration and resources change

In the PC game

You physically travel through the 3D environment, locate nodes and decide where extraction and manufacturing should happen. The Steam store description gives the world a 30 km² figure; that is Steam’s stated description, not an independently measured map area. Distance has practical consequences because belts, trucks, trains and pipes must connect sites, and a remote deposit may justify a new outpost.

On the tabletop

The board game announcement says players explore to identify resource locations. Exploration therefore becomes a decision represented by turns, tiles, cards or another tabletop system rather than walking through a continuous landscape. The available preview information does not establish the final map layout, discovery deck, fog-of-war rules or whether players can contest the same location. Those details should be checked against the final rules before treating any preview setup as definitive.

The important continuity is strategic: both versions ask you to discover what materials are available and then plan production around those materials. The difference is physical scale. The PC version makes distance and navigation part of the lived experience; the board game must express discovery and location through discrete tabletop choices.

How factories and automation are represented

Continuous logistics on PC

In the video game, belts, trucks, trains and pipes are infrastructure you lay into the world. You can watch items move, find a backed-up belt, increase machine capacity or reroute a line. Production is visible and persistent, and mistakes can be corrected by rebuilding the factory.

Abstract production lines on the table

The tabletop design keeps machines and conveyor belts as recognizable concepts, but they function as an engine-building system rather than real-time logistics. A production line may be represented by a combination of components that improve inputs, outputs or efficiency. Because the preview rulebook is explicitly unfinished, the final number of machine types, belt rules, recipes and upgrade effects is not established.

This abstraction is deliberate. In a September 30, 2026 community update, MOOD Publishing wrote that Satisfactory can “easily be 200 hours of building, optimizing, and rebuilding” and that the tabletop version had to abstract that experience into something playable “in around two hours.” That is the publisher’s design framing, not a verified final playtime or a promise that every game will finish in two hours.

Energy, technology and milestones

Both versions make progress more complicated than simply collecting ore. The board game announcement specifically calls out balancing energy production, developing technologies, completing projects and reaching milestones. These are the tabletop equivalents of the escalating constraints that appear as a PC factory grows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Energy as a planning constraint

On PC, power is part of the factory’s operating infrastructure: insufficient generation can halt production, while additional generators require their own resources and logistics. The tabletop game is announced to include energy management, so players should expect production decisions to involve an energy cost or capacity trade-off. The preview material does not confirm the final power-generation list, outage procedure or exact calculations.

Technology and milestones as progression

The PC game’s long-term progression comes from unlocking more capable recipes and equipment. The board game translates that sense of advancement into technologies, projects and milestones. These give players reasons to change an early engine instead of repeating the same action each turn. Which technologies are available, how many milestones can be claimed and how they score are matters for the final rules.

Interaction: cooperative factory versus competitive table

This is the most consequential difference for PC players. Steam lists the digital game’s single-player and online co-op features. In co-op, players can divide construction, logistics and exploration inside one shared world. The objective is normally a collective factory rather than beating another participant to a finish line.

MOOD Publishing describes the board game as competitive for one to four players. Each participant is expected to make progress, optimize production and pursue milestones while trying to complete the Space Elevator first or score the best result under the final system. The tabletop game may still involve indirect interaction through shared resources, timing or contested opportunities, but no cooperative mode has been announced in the available material.

That distinction affects table talk. PC co-op rewards assigning jobs and solving a bottleneck together. The board game should reward comparing plans, anticipating opponents’ milestones and deciding when an efficient upgrade is worth giving up another opportunity. A solo player gets a dedicated one-player experience, but not evidence of the same open-ended co-op format offered on PC.

Scope, pace and the meaning of “sandbox”

The PC sandbox

The digital world is persistent and spatial. You can spend an evening improving one line, then return later to extend a train network or redesign an entire power grid. The absence of a fixed match length is part of the appeal: the factory itself becomes the project.

The tabletop sandbox

The board game is called a sandbox because it is expected to offer choices about exploration, factory placement, production and technology. It is still bounded by turns, available components and a victory condition. The publisher’s own comparison acknowledges the challenge of compressing a potential 200-hour digital activity into a tabletop session. Consequently, “sandbox” here means multiple viable development paths within a structured game, not an unlimited physical world.

Do not treat any duration shown in a preview video or community discussion as final. MOOD’s preview rulebook was marked as a work in progress on October 8, 2026, and the publisher warned that rules still needed changes and clarification.

What carries over from the PC game

  • Alien-planet premise: exploration and resource discovery remain central rather than being replaced by a generic economic theme.
  • Factory identity: players still place or develop factories and improve production lines.
  • Manufacturing chains: increasingly complex parts and technologies create the familiar progression from basic inputs to advanced outputs.
  • Infrastructure thinking: machines, conveyor belts and energy management preserve the planning mindset of the digital game.
  • Space Elevator goal: the tabletop race uses the Space Elevator as its announced end goal.
  • Room for optimization: the adaptation is intended to let players pursue different production and milestone strategies instead of following one scripted sequence.

What does not carry over literally is the first-person act of walking, the continuous 3D map, real-time item movement and the ability to keep a factory running indefinitely. Those are consequences of the PC format, not merely theme details.

Board-game status, campaign timing and price caveats

Campaign date

The publisher announced a Gamefound campaign for October 13, 2026. Because that date has passed, readers should verify the live campaign page to determine whether the campaign is active, ended or changed. An announced crowdfunding date does not establish that copies are shipping or that a normal retail edition exists.

Preview rules are not final rules

MOOD’s October 8 campaign update included a how-to-play video, a Tabletop Simulator preview and a work-in-progress rulebook. The publisher described the preview as “a small taste of the whole game” and cautioned that the rules still required changes and clarification. Preview components, setup, card effects and turn procedures should therefore not be quoted as final specifications.

Collector pledge

An October 9 pledge update listed a collector tier at €295 in the indexed campaign text. That is a campaign pledge price, not a confirmed retail price, and it may change with taxes, shipping, late pledges or revised tiers. The same update described miniatures, an additional biome, deluxe components, a Space Elevator miniature and more ways to play. Confirm the live campaign’s contents and total cost before backing; no retail or Amazon listing was established in the available announcement.

Which version should you choose?

Choose the PC game if you want

  • A first-person view and the satisfaction of physically walking through a factory you designed.
  • Solo play or online co-op, including the cross-platform multiplayer features listed by Steam.
  • Open-ended construction with no required winner or fixed session endpoint.
  • Real logistics using belts, trucks, trains and pipes across a large explorable world.
  • Freedom to pause, rebuild and continue a project over many sessions.

Watch the board game if you want

  • A competitive tabletop engine-builder for one to four players.
  • A defined race toward the Space Elevator and the publisher’s Employee of the Month objective.
  • Resource discovery, factory optimization, energy and technology decisions in a bounded session.
  • A physical game that captures the planning themes without requiring a gaming PC or a 3D world.
  • A solo mode that is separate from, rather than identical to, the PC game’s co-op experience.

Wait before deciding if you need final specifications

Wait for the completed rulebook and live campaign details if your decision depends on exact session length, component counts, solo scoring, cooperative rules, retail distribution, shipping or the final pledge price. Those facts were not fixed in the work-in-progress preview.

Bottom line for PC fans

Satisfactory: The Board Game is not a tabletop port that reproduces the PC interface. It is an adaptation of the same production fantasy: discover resources, build an increasingly capable factory, manage energy and climb a technology ladder toward the Space Elevator. The PC version expresses that fantasy through first-person exploration, continuous automation and optional co-op in a 30 km² world described by Steam. The board game expresses it through competitive engine building, discrete exploration and a race for milestones in a one-to-four-player format.

The announced campaign and preview materials show the direction, not a final product specification. The clearest practical test is your preferred social structure: choose PC for an ongoing shared construction project; consider the board game when you want a finite competitive challenge built around Satisfactory’s recognizable systems.
