For a Satisfactory dedicated server, start with 8 GB of RAM. Allocate 16 GB if the save is large or more than four players will connect. Use a recent x86-64 processor with good single-core performance—community guidance gives an Intel Core i5-3570-or-better or AMD Ryzen 5 3600-or-better as examples. These are starting recommendations, not guarantees: player count, factory complexity and save size change the workload.
Satisfactory supports dedicated servers for PC players. Console players cannot join them. Hosting at home requires a router and firewall setup that can support port forwarding, or a suitable VPN. A managed host avoids much of that administration, but you still need to verify memory, CPU exposure, architecture, backups, region and player limits.
What a Satisfactory dedicated server does
A dedicated server keeps the game world running independently of a player’s local game session. Players connect to that persistent world from compatible PC clients, so the host machine needs resources for simulation, saves and network connections rather than for rendering the game scene.

It describes that wiki as being “updated and maintained by our community and have a ton of information on how to set up dedicated servers.” Because the hardware figures come from community documentation rather than a formal developer benchmark, treat them as practical starting points and leave headroom where possible.

How much RAM does a Satisfactory server need?

Memory usage is affected by the world itself, not only by the number of people online. A mature factory with extensive conveyor networks, vehicles, machines and stored objects can be more demanding than a new save with the same player count. A four-player limit is therefore not a precise memory threshold; it is a useful point at which to consider moving from the baseline toward 16 GB.
When renting a server, check whether the advertised RAM is dedicated to your instance or shared with other workloads. Confirm whether the provider counts the operating system and management software inside the allocation. If you host on a home PC, leave memory for the operating system and any other applications rather than assigning every installed gigabyte to the server.
What CPU is required?
Use a compatible 64-bit architecture
The community server guidance specifies x86-64. It does not support 32-bit x86 or ARM. This matters with inexpensive virtual machines: a provider may advertise several virtual CPUs while exposing an incompatible emulated model. The page specifically warns that a kvm64 CPU will not work. Ask a VPS provider which CPU model and instruction features are exposed instead of judging compatibility from the vCPU count alone.
Prioritize single-core performance
The server uses multiple CPU cores, but the documentation says strong single-core performance is especially important. Its examples are an Intel Core i5-3570 or better and an AMD Ryzen 5 3600 or better. Those examples are not a modern benchmark, a promise of a particular player capacity or a recommendation to buy one of those exact processors. They are reference points showing the general class of x86-64 hardware intended by the guide.

A processor with many slow or heavily contended virtual cores can perform worse than a machine with fewer, faster cores. For a VPS, ask whether CPU resources are dedicated, what processor generation backs the host node and whether throttling applies. For a home machine, check that sustained CPU load from the server will not compete with another demanding workload.

The listed versions describe supported options in the community documentation, not a guarantee that every future game branch or installer behaves identically on every release. Before deploying, check the current dedicated-server instructions for the branch you intend to run and for any package or runtime prerequisites.
Home hosting requirements
Running the server on your own PC or a machine in your home is possible, but the network must allow incoming connections. The server page identifies port forwarding or a VPN as the necessary home-hosting capability. Your router, firewall and internet service all affect whether outside players can reach the process.
Home-hosting checklist
- Use a machine that meets the memory, CPU and x86-64 guidance, with additional headroom for the operating system.
- Install the dedicated-server software according to the current Satisfactory instructions.
- Reserve a stable local address for the host so a router rule does not point to a changing device.
- Configure only the ports and protocols specified by the current server guide, then create matching firewall rules on the host.
- Test from an external connection rather than assuming that a successful local connection proves internet reachability.
- Keep the machine powered on whenever the world needs to remain available.
- Back up the save files before upgrades or configuration changes. The developer FAQ specifically recommends save backups.
The developer FAQ also provides multiplayer port and firewall troubleshooting. Use that current guidance when a server works for people on the same network but not for remote players. Router menus and internet-service restrictions differ, so an exact rule that works on one home network may not apply to another.

Home server or rented hosting?
A rented dedicated-server instance can provide a persistent session without leaving a home computer running. It does not remove the need to choose adequate resources or maintain the game installation. Compare the practical responsibilities rather than assuming that any plan labeled “game server” is suitable.

For a small group with a suitable always-on machine and control of the router, home hosting can be practical. Renting is generally more convenient when nobody wants to manage port forwarding, power availability, operating-system maintenance or physical hardware. In either case, the decisive checks are compatible CPU architecture, enough memory for the save, a suitable region and a backup plan.

How to size a server before you deploy
- Count concurrent players. Record the largest number likely to be online at once, not only the usual number. More than four players is one of the situations for which the documentation says 16 GB may be appropriate.
- Assess the save. A new world and a long-running, complex factory should not be treated as equivalent workloads. Plan additional memory and CPU headroom for the latter.
- Confirm the CPU model. On physical hardware, verify x86-64 and sustained single-core capability. On a VPS, ask for the exposed model and avoid an instance reporting
kvm64. - Reserve system resources. Do not allocate all RAM or CPU capacity to the server if the host also runs a desktop, monitoring tools, backups or other services.
- Check the network path. For home hosting, confirm port-forwarding or VPN capability and firewall control. For rented hosting, confirm the available region, ports and external access policy.
- Test with the real save. Connect the expected number of players, load the largest save and watch for memory pressure, CPU saturation or connection failures before treating the setup as ready.
Common failure modes and fixes
The server will not start on a VPS
First check architecture and the exposed virtual CPU. A high vCPU count does not compensate for an unsupported architecture, and the community page explicitly identifies kvm64 as incompatible. Ask the provider for a different CPU model or instance type before changing unrelated settings.

Players experience simulation slowdowns
Compare the load against the CPU guidance, with particular attention to single-core performance and contention from other processes. Close competing workloads on a home host or move to a less-contended instance. If the problem appears only with a large, established save or a larger group, reassess memory as well as CPU rather than adding vCPUs blindly.
Remote players cannot connect
Confirm that the host is reachable from outside the local network, then check the router forwarding rule, the host firewall and the ports required by the current setup guide. A local connection test alone cannot validate remote access. Use the developer FAQ’s multiplayer port troubleshooting when the server is visible locally but not externally.
A console player cannot join
This is a platform limitation, not a port-setting error. The official FAQ says console players cannot join dedicated servers and explains: “No, to ensure that console players can rely on a stable, consistent factory experience, we decided to keep the two ecosystems (Console and PC) separate.” Plan the group around supported PC clients.
The world is lost after an update or mistake
Restore from a known-good save backup. Make backups before updates and configuration changes, keep more than one recovery point, and periodically verify that a backup can actually be opened. A hosting plan’s word “backup” is not enough; check its retention and restore process.

Do Steam’s system requirements apply to the server?
No. Steam’s current listing describes the player game client: 8 GB of RAM minimum and 16 GB recommended. Those figures concern the computer rendering and running the client, not the memory allocation for a headless dedicated server.

A player may therefore need a PC that meets the client requirements while the separate server needs its own allocation. If one computer runs both, budget resources for both workloads instead of adding the two numbers mechanically or assuming one table replaces the other.
What to verify before paying for hosting
- Memory allocation: Confirm the actual RAM assigned to the instance and whether it is shared.
- CPU details: Request the processor model or a meaningful performance description, not only a vCPU number.
- Architecture: Ensure x86-64 support and ask whether the virtual CPU is exposed as
kvm64or another incompatible model. - Player limit: Check that the plan permits the number of simultaneous players you expect.
- Save handling: Confirm upload, download, backup frequency, retention and restore controls.
- Settings and ports: Make sure you can configure the required server settings and access the necessary ports.
- Region: Select a location that keeps latency reasonable for the group.
- Operating-system and branch support: Verify that the host supports the current dedicated-server version and installation method.
- Total price: Check recurring charges, storage or backup add-ons and any limits that could force an upgrade.

Small PC group with a home machine
Start at the 8 GB baseline on compatible x86-64 hardware, provided the save is modest and the host has spare capacity. Confirm router forwarding or use a VPN, configure the firewall from the current guide and maintain independent save backups.

Plan around 16 GB rather than treating 8 GB as a promise. Pair it with a processor that has strong single-core performance and monitor the real save under the expected player load.
VPS or managed hosting
Choose by exposed CPU model, architecture, memory, region, backups and controls. Reject an instance that exposes kvm64, and do not infer suitability from vCPU count alone.
