Self-host if you already have an always-on 64-bit Windows or Linux machine and are comfortable with router, firewall, backups, and updates. Rent if you want deployment, public reachability, and hardware management handled for you. The right choice depends on CPU performance, RAM, storage, network location, file access, mod policy, recovery tools, support, and the total cost over the period you will play.

What a Satisfactory dedicated server provides

Satisfactory’s dedicated-server tool runs the game world independently of any player’s game session. Coffee Stain Studios’ 2021 Epic Games Store listing describes it this way: “Our Dedicated Server tool gives players the ability to host their own dedicated servers, meaning you can keep building your factory even if your friends aren’t online!” Players connect to that persistent world rather than relying on one person to remain in-game.

You can run the server on a computer at home or pay a third-party hosting company to run it in a data center. The game software is the same broad concept in both cases; the difference is who owns the machine, controls the operating system and files, handles networking, performs backups, and responds when the process stops.

Self-hosted or rented: the decision in one minute

Choose self-hosting when

  • You already own a 64-bit Windows or Linux machine that can remain powered on.
  • You want direct access to save files, configuration, logs, and the server installation.
  • Your group needs unrestricted or unusual mod workflows.
  • You can configure inbound firewall and router rules, or can provide access through a suitable VPN.
  • You are willing to maintain the operating system, game server, backups, and restart process.

Choose a rented server when

  • You do not want a home computer running continuously.
  • Your internet connection, carrier-grade NAT, router, or local network makes inbound hosting difficult.
  • You want a provider to supply a public address, deployment controls, and basic recovery tools.
  • Your group values a data-center location closer to most players.
  • You accept a recurring bill and the provider’s limits on files, mods, versions, and configuration.

Neither option is universally faster or cheaper. A provider’s CPU generation, storage, location, and support can differ substantially, while a home host’s performance and electricity cost depend on equipment you already own. Treat “best” as a fit decision, not a benchmark result.

Hardware and connection requirements

The published Windows requirements below come from Coffee Stain Studios’ 2021 Epic Games Store listing. They are a baseline, not a promise that every large factory or player count will perform identically.

Item Minimum listed configuration Recommended listed configuration
Operating system Windows 10, 64-bit Windows 11, 64-bit
Processor Intel Core i5-3570-class, four cores AMD Ryzen 5 5600X or Intel Core i5-12400-class, six physical cores
Memory 8 GB RAM 16 GB RAM
Storage 20 GB available space 20 GB SSD space

The Satisfactory Wiki’s current dedicated-server guidance (accessed October 18, 2026) likewise calls for a recent x86-64 CPU and 8 GB of RAM, with 16 GB advisable for larger saves or more than four players. It also requires broadband internet. The listing’s 20 GB figure is the space for the listed installation; leave additional free capacity for updates, logs, temporary files, and multiple backups.

CPU matters more than a simple core count

Compare processor generation and single-thread performance rather than accepting a host’s headline core number. A six-core allocation on an older or heavily shared processor may be less useful than fewer modern, consistently available cores. Ask a provider whether the advertised CPU is dedicated, shared, or subject to throttling; no universal performance ranking is established here.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan memory for the save, not only the player list

Use 8 GB as the published floor and 16 GB as the safer target for a substantial factory or a group exceeding four players. The operating system and management panel also consume memory, so a machine with exactly the server requirement has little headroom. Watch memory usage while the save is loaded and during autosaves rather than judging from an idle process.

  • DO MORE WITH DASHBOARD. Ensure your drive is optimized for prime performance with the downloadable WD_BLACK Dashboard (Windows only).

Use fast, reliable storage

An SSD is part of the recommended listing. It helps the server load saves and access files consistently, but it does not replace backups. Keep the active save and its backup copies on storage that is healthy and monitored. A separate disk or separate machine for backup copies reduces the chance that one disk failure destroys both the live world and its recovery data.

Bandwidth and reachability

A broadband connection is required for a home server. Your practical limit is not only download and upload speed: latency, packet loss, connection stability, and whether your internet service permits inbound traffic all matter. A home host behind carrier-grade NAT may be unable to receive a normal port-forwarded connection; in that case, a VPN-based approach or a rented server may be more realistic.

How to self-host

1. Prepare the machine

  1. Use a 64-bit Windows or Linux installation on a machine that can remain powered on.
  2. Install operating-system updates, enable automatic security updates where practical, and use a separate account or restricted permissions for routine administration.
  3. Install the Satisfactory dedicated-server tool through the distribution method you intend to maintain. Keep the installation path, save location, logs, and backup directory documented.
  4. Confirm that the machine has at least the published baseline and additional free storage for updates and backups.

2. Configure the server before exposing it

  1. Start the server locally and confirm that it creates its configuration and save directories.
  2. Set the server name, administrative credentials, save selection, and any gameplay settings in the supported configuration interface.
  3. Stop the process cleanly before copying or replacing save files. Keep an untouched backup of the original save before making changes.

3. Open the required network paths

Current Satisfactory server guidance identifies game port 7777 and reliable-messaging port 8888. The exact protocol selection and syntax depend on your operating system and router, so follow the current server guide for those details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Assign the host a stable address on your local network, preferably with a DHCP reservation in the router.
  2. Create operating-system firewall rules allowing the server’s required traffic on ports 7777 and 8888.
  3. Create matching router port-forwarding rules from the public interface to the host’s stable local address.
  4. Test from outside your home network. A test made only from the same LAN can appear successful even when internet forwarding is broken.
  5. Give friends the correct public address or connection method, and avoid publishing administrative credentials.

If your provider blocks inbound traffic or uses carrier-grade NAT, ordinary forwarding will not solve the problem. Use a suitable VPN arrangement that every player can reach, or move the server to a host with a publicly reachable network.

Sandisk 1TB Portable SSD, Up to 800MB/s Read Speeds, Black (Old Model) | External Solid State Drive, Compatible with Laptops & Tablets, Up to 2M Drop Protection, USB 3.2 Gen 2, USB-C to USB-A Cable
  • Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
  • Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
  • Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
  • From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.

4. Make startup and recovery automatic

Do not rely on manually opening a terminal after every reboot. On Windows, configure Task Scheduler or an equivalent service wrapper to start the dedicated-server process at boot and restart it after an unexpected exit. On Linux, use a systemd service with automatic restart, a dedicated user, and an explicit working directory. Test both a normal reboot and a forced process stop while you are present.

5. Back up saves and test restoration

  • Back up before game or server updates, mod changes, and major factory work.
  • Keep several dated generations rather than overwriting one file.
  • Copy at least one generation off the server machine.
  • Periodically restore a copy to a separate test location so you know the backup is usable.
  • Record which server build and mod set produced each backup.

6. Maintain the host

Apply operating-system and server updates during an announced maintenance window. Watch disk capacity, memory, CPU load, temperature, and unexpected restarts. Restrict administrative access, use strong unique credentials, and avoid exposing unrelated services from the same home network. If friends need file access, provide only the least privilege and remove it when it is no longer required.

What renting changes

A third-party host places the machine and network in a provider’s environment. You normally select a plan, location, server branch, and storage allocation from a control panel, then receive a connection address. This removes the need to keep a home computer online and usually avoids home-router forwarding, but it does not remove all administration: you still choose updates, manage saves, control access, and diagnose game-specific problems.

The Satisfactory guidance warns that provider setups can limit options or add settings that are not obvious. Modding documentation is more direct: “Third-party server hosts often restrict how you can access and modify files on the system, complicating the mod setup process.” Treat every plan as a particular product rather than assuming all rented servers expose the same controls.

Questions to answer before paying

  • CPU: Which processor generation is used, and is performance shared or throttled?
  • Memory: How much RAM is actually allocated to your instance, and can it be increased without migrating?
  • Storage: Is the disk SSD-backed, and is the stated capacity available to your server rather than shared by a quota?
  • Location: Is there a data-center region close to most players? A location label alone is not a measured latency guarantee.
  • Files: Do you receive a file manager or SFTP access to saves, configuration, logs, and mods?
  • Backups: How often are backups made, how many generations are retained, and can you download and restore them yourself?
  • Version control: Can you select the supported server branch and delay an update until clients are ready?
  • Mods: Is the required mod manager or manual file workflow allowed, and does support cover it?
  • Recovery: Can you restart, reinstall, or roll back without opening a ticket?
  • Support: What are the support hours, response expectations, and escalation process?
  • Exit: Can you download the complete save and configuration if you cancel?

Prices, locations, allocations, and policies change. Check each provider’s current first-party plan page and terms immediately before purchase; there is no defensible universal monthly price from the available evidence.

Self-hosted versus rented: practical comparison

Decision axis Self-hosted tendency Rented tendency
Setup time Longer: install software, configure firewall and router, and build recovery procedures. Shorter initial deployment, subject to the provider’s panel and policies.
Recurring cost No universal figure; account for equipment ownership, electricity, connectivity, and your time. Predictable recurring charge, plus any upgrade, backup, or transfer fees in the plan.
Existing hardware and electricity Uses your machine and power; cheapest when suitable hardware is already available. Provider supplies the machine and power; no always-on home computer required.
CPU, RAM, and storage allocation Under your control, limited by the machine you own. Defined by the plan and potentially affected by sharing or upgrade limits.
Network and geographic latency Depends on your broadband route and home location. Depends on the selected data center and provider network.
Save backups You design, store, and test them. Tools may be included, but retention, download, and restore rights vary.
File and SFTP access Full local access, subject to your own permissions. May be available, restricted, or absent.
Mod compatibility Most flexible because you control required files. Depends on allowed files, manager workflow, and provider support.
Update control You choose when to update, but you must perform the work. Panel controls may simplify updates but can impose provider timing or branches.
Restart and recovery Requires your service manager, monitoring, and restore plan. Often available through a panel, with provider-specific limits.
Provider support You are responsible for hardware, network, and software troubleshooting. Support can help with the platform, but game mods and custom files may be excluded.

These are decision tendencies, not measured benchmarks. A well-maintained home server can be more reliable than an overloaded rented instance, while a reputable data-center service can be easier to operate than an underpowered home computer.

Mods, saves, and version compatibility

Self-hosting is the safer choice when your group needs unrestricted access to server files. The Satisfactory Modding Documentation states: “Hosting a server yourself is the best way to ensure you can work with the files required to get modded a server working.” You control the installation, configuration, save files, and the timing of changes.

On a rented server, verify the file workflow before committing. You may need a provider-supported mod manager, SFTP, or a file manager capable of uploading the exact server files. A plan that advertises “mod support” without explaining access, restart behavior, and rollback is not enough evidence for a complex setup.

  • Keep server and client mod versions compatible. A mismatch can prevent connection or produce an unusable session.
  • Back up the unmodded save before adding, removing, or updating mods.
  • Change one mod or one version at a time so a failure has a clear cause.
  • Document the mod list and versions beside each save backup.
  • Confirm that every player uses the same required client-side content and configuration.

The modding documentation limits its support for third-party systems, so a provider may be unable to troubleshoot a custom mod installation even when the base server itself is running correctly.

Network and connection troubleshooting

Friends cannot see or join the server

  1. Confirm that the server process is running and listening on the intended ports.
  2. Check the operating-system firewall rules for ports 7777 and 8888.
  3. Verify that the router forwards both required ports to the host’s current local address.
  4. Test from an external network, not only from another device on the same home Wi-Fi.
  5. Check whether the internet service uses carrier-grade NAT or blocks inbound traffic.
  6. Confirm that friends are using the current public address and that the server has not changed location or branch.

Connections work but gameplay is unstable

  • Measure packet loss and latency at the home connection or selected data center rather than assuming bandwidth is the issue.
  • Check whether another upload, backup, or household device is saturating the connection.
  • Review CPU, memory, storage, and system temperature while the save is active.
  • On a rented instance, ask whether CPU contention or resource throttling is occurring and whether an upgrade changes the allocation.

The server fails after an update or mod change

  1. Stop making additional changes and preserve the current logs and save.
  2. Restore the last known-good server and mod versions.
  3. Test the save without the newest change, then reintroduce changes individually.
  4. Confirm that every client matches the server’s required versions.
  5. If the host restricts file access, request the exact logs and rollback options the plan provides; do not assume support can edit files it cannot access.

The server does not return after a reboot

For a self-hosted machine, inspect the service manager’s startup account, working directory, permissions, and log path. Run the process manually once to distinguish an application error from a service configuration error. For a rented server, use the panel’s console and restart history, then verify that the selected save and branch are still assigned.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Calculating the real cost

Compare both options over the period you actually expect to play. For self-hosting, include only costs that apply to your situation: new hardware or upgrades, electricity for the additional operating load, broadband changes, storage for backups, replacement risk, and the value of your maintenance time. If the machine already runs continuously for another purpose, its incremental electricity cost may be much lower than the full household power bill.

For renting, total the monthly charge, setup or migration fees, paid memory or storage upgrades, backup charges, and any cancellation or transfer limits. Downloading your saves before cancellation has practical value: it prevents a provider change from becoming a world reset.

Because no universal hosting price, electricity rate, hardware cost, or measured latency figure is established, calculate these items from your own equipment, location, plan, and usage instead of relying on a generic “cheap” or “expensive” label.

A decision checklist

  • Do you have a 64-bit machine meeting the published baseline, with headroom for your save?
  • Can your internet service accept inbound traffic, or can every player use a suitable VPN?
  • Will someone monitor updates, backups, disk space, and restarts?
  • Do you need unrestricted files or mods?
  • Which location gives most players the best route?
  • What CPU, RAM, SSD storage, backup retention, and file access does each rented plan actually provide?
  • Can you restore a save and roll back a server or mod update?
  • What is the total cost for the months you expect to play?

If the first three answers are yes and file control matters, self-hosting is usually the stronger fit. If networking, uptime, or maintenance is the obstacle and the provider answers the file, backup, and mod questions clearly, renting is usually the lower-effort fit.
