Build power in repeatable blocks, not as a single oversized plant. Use Biomass Burners only as a temporary bridge, move to coal as soon as coal and water are available, switch to fuel after oil processing is reliable, and reserve nuclear for a stable late-game factory. Size every block for its full input demand, leave a spare connection for expansion, and keep a reserve of generation capacity so a new production line does not cause a brownout.
Satisfactory has six generator types, but they do not behave identically. Biomass Burners scale fuel consumption and output with grid demand; Coal-Powered and Fuel-Powered Generators run as designed for their clock speed; Nuclear Power Plants add fuel logistics, cooling water and waste handling; Geothermal Generators and Alien Power Augmenters are valuable but location- or resource-dependent supplements. The practical details below show how to scale each stage without repeatedly rebuilding your grid.

How Satisfactory power actually scales
The game’s six generator types are Biomass Burners, Coal-Powered Generators, Fuel-Powered Generators, Nuclear Power Plants, Geothermal Generators and Alien Power Augmenters. The electricity system reports available capacity, current consumption and production from connected generators. A factory remains stable only when generation can cover the highest instantaneous demand, including machines that start after a production-line change.
Biomass Burners are the exception to the usual generator behavior: they adjust output and fuel use to match demand. That makes them forgiving for a small starter factory, but it also means they are a poor foundation for a large, continuously expanding grid. The electricity reference documents the distinction between generators and consumers in its clock-speed section: generator clock speed and consumer clock speed follow different efficiency rules.

For every expansion, record four numbers before placing buildings:
- Current grid draw in megawatts (MW).
- Total generator capacity at the planned clock speeds.
- Coal, fuel or fuel-rod throughput available to the generators.
- Water throughput available to the generators that require cooling.
Keep a reserve margin rather than operating exactly at the displayed demand. A factory that appears balanced while every machine is running can still trip when a new belt, train station, refinery or manufacturer starts. A spare connection on the main power bus lets you add a complete module without cutting the existing grid.
Use Biomass Burners as a bridge, not a backbone
What Biomass Burners do well
Biomass Burners are useful while you are hand-feeding early machines and unlocking the first permanent power technology. Because they follow demand, they do not continuously consume fuel when the connected factory is idle. That behavior buys time to gather biomass and learn the layout of your first production lines.
Why to leave them behind quickly
Manual collection and processing become the bottleneck as soon as your factory runs several machines continuously. A burner-only grid also gives you no convenient, repeatable block to copy for the next expansion. Treat the burners as an emergency reserve after coal is online, or remove them from the primary grid once a dependable base load is established.

Transition checklist
- Unlock coal power and identify a coal source that can be belted or piped to a dedicated power site.
- Find a water source close enough for a practical pipe route; plan the extraction and distribution before placing generators.
- Build the first coal module while the Biomass Burners keep the factory alive.
- Start the coal module, verify that its water and coal inputs remain supplied, then move production machines to the permanent grid.
- Keep at least one burner disconnected but fueled for recovery if a belt or pipe failure shuts down the main plant.
Coal power: the first dependable scale step
Core specifications
A Coal-Powered Generator supplies 75 MW at 100% clock speed and uses 45 m³ of water per minute at that speed. These figures are listed in the Satisfactory electricity reference and the Coal-Powered Generator reference. Clocking a generator changes both values proportionally, so the water requirement for a block is 45 m³/min multiplied by the number of generators at 100% clock speed.
| Coal generators at 100% | Generation capacity | Water requirement |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 75 MW | 45 m³/min |
| 4 | 300 MW | 180 m³/min |
| 8 | 600 MW | 360 m³/min |
| 12 | 900 MW | 540 m³/min |
The table is arithmetic from the per-generator specifications; actual delivery still depends on your extractor, pipe and head-lift arrangement. Do not treat a theoretical total as proof that the farthest generator will receive water.
Build a repeatable coal block
- Choose the site. Put coal generators near water when possible. A short, straight pipe network is easier to prime and troubleshoot than a long loop crossing the factory.
- Reserve the footprint. Lay out parallel generator foundations with a service corridor for pipes, belts and power poles. Leave one additional row or connection point for the next block.
- Separate inputs. Give coal and water their own manifolds or clearly labeled branches. Avoid sharing a pipe with unrelated factory consumers until the power plant has been proven stable.
- Size water first. Multiply 45 m³/min by the number of generators at 100% clock speed, then provide practical head lift and buffer capacity. A block that starts dry can make the entire grid oscillate between on and off.
- Connect the power bus last. Start the generators, watch their input buildings and pipe flow, and only then tie the completed module into the main grid.
Manifold versus balanced distribution
A manifold is easy to extend: feed a main pipe and branch to each generator in sequence. The first machines may fill before the last, so allow time for the line to prime and check the far end under continuous load. A balanced layout splits flow into equal branches and can start more evenly, but it uses more fittings and is less convenient when you add a second block. For most factories, a clear manifold with a spare branch is the better expansion pattern.
When fuel power becomes the right move
Fuel generator capacity and behavior
The current Fuel-Powered Generator reference lists 250 MW per generator. It burns fuel at its maximum rate for its clock speed instead of throttling fuel consumption to match grid demand; see the Fuel-Powered Generator reference. Consequently, a fuel plant needs a refinery chain, pipe throughput and buffer sized for the complete generator block, not merely for the factory’s present average draw.

Conditions to switch from coal
- Oil processing is unlocked and producing the fuel product your generators require.
- Refineries, by-product handling and transport can run continuously without starving the power site.
- Pipes can deliver the required liquid flow to every generator, including the highest or most distant branch.
- Storage or a buffer gives the plant time to recover from a short production interruption.
- You have a tested coal or biomass backup while the fuel chain is being commissioned.
Build complete fuel-fed modules
- Determine how many 250 MW generators the next module will contain.
- Work backward from that count to the refinery recipes, raw-oil supply, by-products and pipe routes.
- Install the fuel buffer and distribution manifold before adding the final generators.
- Run the refineries and confirm that the buffer remains stable while all generators operate.
- Add the module to the main bus only after its inputs sustain the full planned load.
Do not place extra fuel generators merely because the building footprint is available. A generator that receives intermittent fuel can destabilize the whole grid, while a smaller complete block is predictable and easier to duplicate.
Nuclear power for large, stable late-game demand
Fuel rods and water requirement
The Nuclear Power Plant reference states that the building burns Uranium Fuel Rods, Plutonium Fuel Rods or Ficsonium Fuel Rods. At 100% clock speed, one plant uses 240 m³ of water per minute. Two plants therefore require 480 m³/min before any additional cooling demand or clock-speed changes are considered.

Nuclear generation is a logistics project rather than a simple generator upgrade. Build and test the fuel-rod production chain, water extraction and distribution, waste routing and storage as separate systems. Keep the reactor hall on an expandable power bus, but do not connect a reactor until its fuel and water inputs have been demonstrated at sustained throughput.
- Fuel production: provide a dedicated chain for the selected rod type and enough transport capacity to keep reactors supplied.
- Cooling water: calculate 240 m³/min per plant at 100% clock speed and verify head lift at the reactor manifold.
- Waste handling: reserve a permanent route and storage or processing capacity before the first reactor starts.
- Isolation: keep pumps, refineries and waste machines on a dependable supply so a reactor cannot be stranded by its own support equipment.
Choose nuclear when the factory has a predictable, large base load and you can operate these support chains continuously. It is not a convenient emergency source for a small or frequently changing grid.

Geothermal Generators and Alien Power Augmenters
Geothermal Generators and Alien Power Augmenters can supplement a grid where the required sites or resources are available. Their output is not a substitute for a deliberately expandable coal, fuel or nuclear backbone: geothermal placement is tied to world locations, and augmenters depend on their own resource and progression requirements.
Connect supplemental generation through the same monitored main bus, but keep the primary plant sized for the factory’s long-term demand. If a site-specific source is temporarily carrying the grid, continue building the next permanent module so an expansion or relocation does not create a sudden deficit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOverclocking: save space, not fuel
Generator clock speed
Generator overclocking scales output and fuel consumption together. A 1% increase in clock speed produces 1% more power and consumes 1% more fuel; it improves neither energy obtained per unit of fuel nor the input required per megawatt. The advanced clock-speed guide explains this relationship at Satisfactory’s advanced clock-speed tutorial.
Use generator overclocking when the limiting resource is construction footprint, travel distance or the number of available foundations. The maximum clock speed with Power Shards is 250%, but the associated input and fuel requirements rise with it. A 250% coal generator therefore provides 187.5 MW and requires 112.5 m³/min of water, calculated from the 75 MW and 45 m³/min base values; confirm that your pipe and fuel network can deliver those rates before applying the setting.

Consumer clock speed
Power consumers do not follow the same efficiency curve. Active consumer overclocking raises power use more than output, while underclocking can reduce operating power. The electricity clock-speed reference documents this distinction at the consumer and generator clock-speed section.
| Situation | Preferred adjustment | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Not enough floor space for another generator | Overclock the generator | Reduces building count while keeping the same energy-per-fuel relationship. |
| Machines frequently idle or a line is overproducing | Underclock consumers | Can lower operating power and match production to demand. |
| Need more product from an existing machine | Check the power and input cost first | Consumer overclocking increases power disproportionately, so another machine may be more efficient. |
A modular layout that survives expansion
Use measured blocks
Give every power site a defined input capacity, a main bus, appropriate storage and a reserved connection for the next module. Label belts, pipes and circuit branches with the intended generator count and clock speed. This turns expansion into a repeatable installation rather than a hunt for the one pipe or pole that was overloaded.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteKeep generation and production separate
Place the generation plant and its fuel or water infrastructure on a dedicated branch of the grid. If a factory machine trips, the power plant should continue running; if the power plant needs maintenance, production should have a controlled backup. This separation also makes it easier to test a new block before exposing the entire factory to it.
Plan a reserve margin
Reserve capacity for startup surges and the next production line. The exact margin depends on your build, but the principle is constant: do not schedule an expansion that consumes the last available megawatt. Finish and test the new power module before turning on the machines it is intended to supply.
Coal, fuel and nuclear compared
| Factor | Coal | Fuel | Nuclear |
|---|---|---|---|
| Output per generator or plant | 75 MW at 100% clock speed | 250 MW in the current reference | Not stated in the cited reference |
| Water at 100% clock speed | 45 m³/min | Not stated in the cited reference | 240 m³/min |
| Primary input | Coal and water | Fuel supplied by an oil-processing chain | Uranium, Plutonium or Ficsonium Fuel Rods and water |
| By-products or waste | Not stated in the cited reference | By-products depend on the selected refinery chain | Requires a planned waste system |
| Construction complexity | Low to moderate; repeatable water-and-coal blocks | Moderate; refineries, pipes, buffers and by-products | High; fuel production, cooling water, waste and isolation |
| Best role | First dependable expansion backbone | Large mid- to late-game modules after oil is stable | Large, predictable late-game base load |
| Ease of copying | High when laid out on a regular grid | High after the refinery and pipe module is proven | Possible, but each copy needs complete fuel and waste infrastructure |
Choose by logistics, not only by the headline MW figure. A lower apparent fuel burden can be outweighed by a difficult recipe chain, inadequate pipe capacity or an unmanaged by-product. The best generator is the one whose complete input and waste system your factory can sustain.
Brownout troubleshooting
The grid trips as soon as a new line starts
- Check current consumption and available capacity while the line is running, not while it is idle.
- Disconnect nonessential machines and bring them back in groups to identify the load that exhausts the reserve.
- Add a complete generator module rather than one un supplied generator.
The last generators in a block keep stopping
- Inspect the far end of the water or fuel manifold and allow time for pipes to prime.
- Check head lift, vertical routing and whether another consumer shares the same pipe.
- Verify that the upstream extractor, refinery or belt provides the full block requirement continuously.
Fuel generators consume the buffer while the factory is idle
This is expected behavior for Fuel-Powered Generators: they burn fuel at their maximum rate for the clock speed rather than matching demand. Reduce the generator count, lower clock speed, or improve fuel production and storage; do not assume an idle factory will stop fuel consumption.
Quick Recap
A reactor shuts down after an apparently successful startup
- Check that water delivery remains at the required rate for every plant, including the highest branch.
- Trace fuel-rod production and transport for intermittent shortages.
- Confirm that waste storage or processing has capacity and that its support machines still have power.
- Keep the reactor’s support systems on a stable branch so a separate factory fault cannot interrupt cooling or waste handling.
Practical decision sequence
- Early factory: run Biomass Burners and collect enough material to unlock permanent power without trying to scale the burner grid indefinitely.
- Coal available: build a measured coal-and-water block, connect it through a spare bus branch and make it the base load.
- Oil established: design a complete fuel module around refinery, pipe and buffer capacity, then add 250 MW generators in finished groups.
- Late-game demand is stable: design nuclear fuel, cooling and waste systems independently, prove their throughput, and only then connect reactors.
- Space is the bottleneck: overclock generators after confirming that every input system can scale by the same percentage; use consumer underclocking when balancing demand is more important than throughput.
