Satellite-to-phone service can connect compatible phones in some places where a carrier has no cell-tower coverage, but it is a supplement to—not a universal replacement for—terrestrial mobile networks. Coverage depends on the service, carrier, phone, country, regulatory approval, and whether the handset has a usable path to the sky. Features and speeds also vary, so check what a specific service supports before relying on it.

How satellite-to-phone service differs from cellular service

A conventional mobile network connects a phone to nearby cell sites over terrestrial infrastructure. Direct-to-phone satellite service instead connects a compatible handset to satellites when terrestrial coverage is unavailable or insufficient. In the United States, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) calls this framework Supplemental Coverage from Space (SCS). The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) describes direct-to-device service as communication between a satellite and an end-user device without specialized hardware or a large ground antenna.

That distinction matters: satellite service is designed to add connectivity in coverage gaps, not to reproduce the experience of a dense network of nearby towers everywhere. A phone may use the carrier’s ordinary network where it is available and rely on a satellite feature only under supported conditions.

Which provides better coverage?

Cellular service is generally the practical choice where a usable terrestrial network exists. Satellite-to-phone service is most relevant beyond tower coverage, such as in remote areas, but advertised reach is not a guarantee of reception at every point. A participating carrier, compatible device, regulatory permission, satellite and spectrum availability, and local conditions all affect whether a connection is possible.

Satellites need a usable path to the handset. Terrain, buildings, foliage, and indoor conditions can block or weaken that path, so a satellite connection may be difficult indoors or in dense urban surroundings. The Wireless Infrastructure Association-commissioned 2025 white paper identifies line-of-sight and indoor or urban reception as limitations. A nearby cell site does not have the same sky-visibility requirement at the handset.

What you are comparing Terrestrial cellular network Satellite-to-phone service
Connection Phone connects to a nearby cell site. Compatible phone connects directly to a satellite when service conditions allow.
Where it helps Places covered by the carrier’s terrestrial network. Some places outside terrestrial coverage, subject to operator, device, regulatory, and local conditions.
Signal obstacles Signal and performance vary with location, device, network load, and other conditions. Needs a usable path to the sky; structures, terrain, foliage, and indoor conditions may weaken or block reception.
Capacity Depends on the local network and its load. Satellite capacity is shared across a coverage area and may not match the capacity of a dense terrestrial network; no universal user-level limit is established here.
Availability Depends on the carrier’s coverage and local network. Depends additionally on satellite service, carrier participation, device eligibility, and market authorization.

Is satellite-to-phone faster than cellular?

There is no established universal answer. The available figures describe different services and metrics, not an apples-to-apples test against a cellular network. The 2025 Wireless Infrastructure Association-commissioned Telecom, Media and Finance Associates white paper assessed then-current satellite direct-to-device download performance as below 1 Mbps. That is a dated industry assessment, not a specification for every service today.

AST SpaceMobile states that its next-generation BlueBird satellites have peak transmission capability above 150 Mbps per cell. This is a company-stated peak capability for satellite infrastructure, not an independently measured speed for a typical phone user. It should not be treated as directly comparable with the white paper’s assessment or as a consumer speed promise.

Terrestrial mobile speeds also vary with signal, network load, device, and location. The available sources do not establish a current, independently measured, like-for-like comparison of live satellite-to-phone services and terrestrial networks for download, upload, latency, or indoor and outdoor performance. For a specific location, a local measurement on the exact service and device is more informative than a general figure.

What can you do over a satellite connection?

Do not assume that every satellite-to-phone service supports the same activities. Messaging, emergency messaging, voice, and broadband data are distinct capabilities; a service may support only some of them, and its feature set can change as networks and devices evolve. Check the operator’s current feature list for your country and phone, and distinguish available commercial functions from planned, demonstrated, or vendor-stated future capabilities.

For example, T-Mobile presents T-Satellite as a way to stay connected where ordinary coverage is unavailable and provides service enrollment and device-eligibility information on its current service page. Its details apply to that service; they do not establish support across all carriers or phones.

Do you need a special phone?

Not necessarily a dedicated satellite phone or separate satellite antenna: direct-to-device service is designed to communicate with eligible end-user phones. But “works with regular phones” does not mean it works with every handset. Compatibility and eligibility are service-specific and may depend on the phone model, operating system or software, carrier, plan, country, and supported activity.

Before relying on a service, verify the exact handset and plan with the carrier, along with the functions available in your location. A satellite messenger or dedicated satellite phone is a separate product category for standalone satellite communications; it is not a required accessory for direct-to-phone service.

Why regulation and carrier partnerships affect availability

Direct-to-phone service needs market-specific regulatory permissions and spectrum rights, as well as arrangements with participating mobile operators. A technical demonstration or company announcement alone does not establish that customers can use a service in a particular country.

The FCC’s December 2024 order provides U.S. regulatory context: it records that the Commission authorized SpaceX to provide SCS in the United States on November 26, 2024, and discusses operator arrangements, including SpaceX and T-Mobile. The order is evidence of that authorization and its historical context, not a current catalog of every service, feature, or eligible customer.

How to compare services for your situation

  1. Start with the coverage gap. Identify where you lose terrestrial service and whether a satellite option is intended to serve that area. A footprint or coverage map cannot guarantee a usable signal at a specific spot.
  2. Confirm market and carrier support. Check that the service is authorized and offered in your country by your carrier, rather than relying on an announcement about a future plan.
  3. Check the exact phone and plan. Use the operator’s current eligibility information for your handset, software, plan, and enrollment terms.
  4. Match the feature to the need. Confirm whether the service supports the activity you need—such as messaging, emergency messaging, voice, or data—rather than assuming full mobile-broadband capability.
  5. Consider the surroundings. Think about sky visibility, buildings, terrain, and foliage along the places you expect to use the phone.
  6. Look for relevant performance evidence. For a speed or reliability comparison, seek independent measurements made on the same devices, in the same locations and time window, and for the same service type. The figures cited above are not such a comparison.
  7. Verify the cost directly with the carrier. Enrollment and plan terms vary, and current prices are not established here.
