Start with what’s available at your exact address. If fiber or cable is offered, compare its plan-level upload and download speeds, latency, full price, data terms, and equipment against eligible 5G Home and satellite plans. Satellite can be an important option where wired or fixed-wireless service is unavailable or inadequate, but it is not automatically the best fit; performance and cost depend on the plan and location.

How to choose: check your address, then compare plans

Internet technology labels are a starting point, not a performance guarantee. Availability, plan details, and local network conditions can differ from one address to the next. The FCC says its National Broadband Map shows provider-reported availability and maximum advertised speeds—not actual performance, affordability, or adoption. The agency also lets users challenge map data.

  1. Check the FCC National Broadband Map: enter your address to see reported providers, technologies, and advertised speeds.
  2. Confirm with each provider: use its address-eligibility checker and verify the precise plan offered. Map listings are based on provider-submitted data, so they are not a final confirmation of service.
  3. Compare each eligible plan’s Broadband Facts label: review download and upload speeds, latency, monthly price, one-time charges, equipment charges, and data allowance or other data terms.
  4. Choose for your household’s needs: prioritize upload performance for frequent video calls, large file transfers, or sending backups; download capacity for streaming and downloads; and latency for responsive online activities. Consider the full ongoing cost and any installation or equipment requirements.

A mobile 5G coverage map does not establish that 5G Home is available at your address. For example, Verizon says its 5G Home eligibility is address-specific.

How the four internet types differ

Option What it is and when to consider it What to verify
Fiber An optical connection to the home or, in some multi-dwelling buildings, to a unit. A strong candidate where available if your household needs high capacity and upload performance. Address availability, plan upload and download speeds, installation, total price, and equipment.
Cable Wired broadband over a provider’s physical cable network. It can be a practical high-capacity choice where fiber is absent. The specific plan’s label, upload and download rates, latency, promotional and ongoing prices, fees, and data terms.
5G Home Fixed wireless: a receiver in the home connects to cellular infrastructure. It may be convenient where the provider qualifies the address. Address eligibility, local plan-specific speeds and latency, possible network variability, equipment, and terms.
Satellite A dish or user terminal connects to satellites. It is especially relevant where terrestrial options are unavailable or do not meet household needs. Clear view of the sky, obstructions, weather, congestion, plan priority, latency, equipment, and installation costs.

What performance figures can—and cannot—tell you

Published ranges help set expectations, but the numbers below come from different sources and measurement approaches. They are examples, not promises for a particular home, and should not be averaged or treated as directly comparable.

Satellite

Starlink’s current specifications list typical land-service downloads of 25–220 Mbps, uploads of 5–20 Mbps, and latency of 25–60 ms. Starlink notes that performance can vary with location, time of day, weather, obstructions, and network congestion; it says remote locations may have higher latency. These are provider specifications, not guaranteed speeds.

Separately, the FCC’s 2026 report, discussing 2025 data, says satellite users in its analysis typically experienced downloads between 45 and 280 Mbps and uploads between 10 and 30 Mbps. The FCC also found that fewer than half of satellite broadband users experienced speeds of 100/20 Mbps in 2025, and satellite users in fewer than half of states achieved median upload speeds of 20 Mbps. These FCC figures describe its cited analysis; they do not predict an individual subscriber’s service. The FCC and Starlink figures use different sources and measurement bases.

The FCC reports that satellite performance trails major fiber and cable operators. That comparison does not mean satellite is unsuitable for every household: where terrestrial service is unavailable or inadequate, satellite may provide an otherwise missing broadband option.

5G Home

Verizon’s 2025 disclosure gives one mid-band 5G Home plan tier as an example: 25–85 Mbps download, 5–10 Mbps upload, and 50–70 ms latency. Verizon says these ranges are based on network tests for the six-month period ending August 31, 2025. They apply to that disclosed plan and measurement period—not every Verizon plan, every address, or every 5G Home provider.

5G Home uses a receiver in the home to connect to nearby cellular infrastructure. Because performance depends on the plan, address, equipment, network connection, and cellular conditions, check the local disclosure and eligible plan rather than relying on a general mobile-network coverage display.

Fiber and cable

The available source material does not establish one speed or latency range for all fiber or cable service. Providers offer different plans, and the plan label is the relevant place to check the actual upload and download rates, latency, and other terms for the service offered at your address. AT&T describes fiber as an optical connection to the premises or certain multi-dwelling units; Xfinity describes its broadband service as using the same physical network as its cable service.

Which option may fit your household?

Choose fiber when it is available and its plan suits your budget

Fiber is a strong candidate when your household needs substantial upload and download capacity, but the technology name alone does not establish the speeds, price, or installation conditions at your address. Check the exact plan label and total cost.

Consider cable where fiber is not offered

Cable can provide a wired broadband alternative. Compare the advertised upload rate as carefully as the download rate, and distinguish any introductory price from the ongoing charge. Check the plan’s data terms, fees, and equipment requirements.

Consider 5G Home if you qualify and local terms work

Fixed wireless may be worth comparing when a provider qualifies your address and the plan’s disclosed speeds, latency, equipment, and terms meet your needs. Cellular conditions and the home receiver’s connection can affect performance, so do not infer home-service eligibility or performance from mobile coverage alone.

Consider satellite when terrestrial service does not meet the need

Satellite can extend broadband choices to households without suitable wired or fixed-wireless options. Before signing up, check whether the installation can get a suitable view of the sky and understand how obstructions, weather, congestion, location, time of day, and plan priority may affect the service. Starlink identifies permanent mounts as an accessory option for avoiding obstructions; check that any mount is compatible with your terminal and installation surface.

What to check before switching

  • Availability: confirm that the exact service and plan are offered at the service address.
  • Speed and latency: compare plan-level download and upload figures and latency disclosures, noting their scope and measurement period.
  • Total cost: account for the recurring price, one-time charges, equipment, and installation. For cable, distinguish introductory pricing from the ongoing price.
  • Data terms: read the plan label and provider terms for any allowance or other data conditions.
  • Installation and equipment: establish what is included, what costs extra, and whether the home or building needs a particular connection, receiver, or unobstructed satellite view.
  • Plan documentation: use the Broadband Facts label for the specific plan rather than relying on a technology-wide speed claim.
