A SATA-to-USB adapter or enclosure can help diagnose an internal SATA drive that is not detected by giving it a different connection path. If it appears over USB, that suggests the original cable, port, power path, or computer may be involved—but it does not prove the drive is healthy or restore its files. An adapter is a troubleshooting aid, not a drive repair or data-recovery tool.
What a SATA-to-USB adapter can—and cannot—tell you
Seagate Support recommends connecting a SATA drive to a SATA-USB enclosure or similar device as one troubleshooting step when the BIOS does not detect it. The test bypasses the drive’s usual internal data connection and uses a USB port instead. If the drive is detected on another computer through USB, the result points toward the original connection path or computer as a possible source of the problem.
That result is not a clean bill of health: a drive can appear intermittently or be detected while still having file-system, media, or other hardware problems. Nor does detection mean the files have been recovered. The adapter only changes how the computer connects to the drive.

First identify the drive’s interface and physical form factor, then confirm that the adapter or enclosure supports them. Also check how the device supplies power. Seagate lists a drive that does not spin up as one possible reason it may not be detected, so a connection that lacks the power the drive requires may not provide a useful test. The cited manufacturer guidance does not certify particular consumer adapters or guarantee universal compatibility.
#1 Best Overall
- 2.5" SATA Drives Only — SSD & HDD: Compatible with 2.5" SATA I/II/III SSDs and laptop HDDs. NOT compatible with: M.2 NVMe drives, M.2 SATA drives, 3.5" desktop HDDs, or slim SATA optical drives. Verify your drive has a standard 2.5" SATA connector before purchasing.
- USB Bus-Powered — No Adapter Needed for Most Drives: Powers most 2.5" SATA SSDs and laptop HDDs directly from USB. Note: Some older or high-capacity 2.5" mechanical HDDs may draw more current than a single USB port provides — if a drive fails to spin up, try a powered USB hub or a different USB 3.0 port.
- USB 3.0 (USB-A) — 5Gbps with UASP: Host connection is USB Type-A (USB-A). Computers with only USB-C ports require a separate USB-C to USB-A adapter (not included). UASP support for faster transfers on compatible systems.
- Plug & Play: No drivers required; hot-swappable design for quick access to drives on Windows, macOS, and Linux
- Usage Note: Not intended for all configurations such as system boot drives or certain embedded systems; compatibility may vary by device
Handle an internal drive carefully. Western Digital warns that excessive physical force and electrostatic discharge can damage drives. If the contents are valuable or irreplaceable, avoid forcing connectors or repeatedly experimenting with a drive that may have a physical problem.
Try a different connection path methodically
- Inspect the existing connection. With the computer powered down as appropriate for the system, check that the data cable is seated and not visibly damaged. Check the drive’s power connection as well.
- Check system configuration. Seagate lists several possible BIOS detection causes: the drive may be disabled in BIOS, SATA drivers may not be installed properly, the data cable may be faulty or unplugged, the drive may not spin up, jumper settings may be incorrect, or the drive may be faulty. These are possible causes, not a ranking of how often each occurs. See Seagate’s SATA drive detection troubleshooting.
- Test another port or computer. If practical, connect the drive to another compatible port or computer. This helps distinguish a problem with the original computer or connection from one that follows the drive.
- Use a compatible SATA-to-USB adapter or enclosure. Connect the drive only after checking interface, form factor, and power requirements. Note whether the computer detects it; do not treat detection alone as proof that the drive or its contents are sound.
If the drive appears as RAW or unallocated, protect the data first
A drive can be visible to the computer without its files being accessible. If it appears as RAW or unallocated and the data matters, do not format it or treat a destructive repair attempt as a recovery step. Seagate’s USB External Troubleshooter advises considering data recovery in that situation after basic connection, port, cable, and computer checks. It also cautions against repair attempts when the files are not backed up elsewhere.

When to stop troubleshooting
If the drive remains inaccessible, changing the adapter cannot resolve an underlying media error, file-system or partition-table damage, or drive failure. Western Digital identifies these among possible reasons an internal drive may not be detected. When the data is important and the drive still cannot be accessed, professional data recovery is a different path from testing another connection: it is intended to address access to the data, not simply to diagnose the cable or port. See Western Digital’s internal-drive troubleshooting guidance.

- SATA DRIVES ONLY — 2.5in & 3.5in: Works with SATA I/II/III hard drives and SSDs. Does NOT support IDE/PATA, M.2 NVMe, M.2 SATA, SAS, or drives already in a USB enclosure. Check your drive's connector before ordering — a bare SATA drive has a wide flat L-shaped edge connector, not a ribbon cable or a small M.2 gold-finger card.
- USB TYPE-A HOST CABLE — NOT A USB-C PORT: The included host cable ends in USB Type-A and plugs into a USB 3.0 Type-A port. If your computer has only USB-C ports, you will need a USB-C to USB-A adapter, which is not included. For stable operation plug directly into the computer — USB hubs and USB 2.0 ports may cause intermittent disconnections.
- REAL-WORLD SPEED, NOT INTERFACE MATH: USB 3.0 with UASP support (UASP-capable host required). Typical mechanical HDD transfer speeds are 100-160 MB/s, which is the drive's own limit, not the port's; SSD speeds vary up to the USB interface maximum. Backward compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1.
- 12V POWER ADAPTER INCLUDED — REQUIRED FOR 3.5in DRIVES: A 12V/2A AC power adapter is in the box and a wall outlet is needed. 3.5in HDDs cannot run on USB power alone — without the adapter the drive will fail to spin up or drop out during use. 2.5in drives are generally bus-powered, but the adapter is recommended for stability.
- PLUG AND PLAY, TOOL-FREE, HOT-SWAP: No drivers on Windows 10/11, macOS, or Linux. Lay-flat bay accepts a bare drive without tools, swaps without rebooting, and an LED shows power and activity. Note: S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics are not passed through the USB bridge, and on macOS a drive may need remounting after sleep. Drive not included.
