Usually, yes—if you are installing a 3.5-inch SATA hard drive or a 2.5-inch SATA SSD in a desktop, you need a 7-pin SATA data cable connecting the drive to a motherboard SATA port (or a compatible host adapter). You also need a separate SATA power lead from the power supply. The data cable carries information; it cannot power the drive. An SSD installed in an M.2 slot uses the slot’s connector instead of a SATA data cable. If a suitable data cable is already connected, buying another one will not help.
What a SATA cable actually does
“SATA cable” can mean two different cable paths in a computer, and confusing them is the most common reason people buy the wrong accessory.
SATA data cable
The data cable links the drive’s 7-pin SATA data connector to a SATA port on the motherboard or to a compatible SATA host-adapter card. It carries commands and data between the storage device and the computer. A data cable does not supply electrical power.
SATA power lead
The separate power lead comes from the power supply unit (PSU) and plugs into the drive’s wider SATA power connector. A drive with a data cable but no power lead will not spin up or initialize. Never plug a PSU SATA power connector into a motherboard SATA data port; the connectors are different and are intended for different jobs.

| Drive or connection | Data connection | Power connection |
|---|---|---|
| 3.5-inch SATA hard drive | 7-pin SATA data cable to a motherboard SATA port or host adapter | Separate SATA power lead from the PSU |
| 2.5-inch SATA SSD | 7-pin SATA data cable to a motherboard SATA port or host adapter | Separate SATA power lead from the PSU |
| M.2 SSD | Installs in a compatible motherboard M.2 slot; no SATA data cable for that slot connection | Provided through the M.2 slot |
The table describes the physical connection. An M.2 slot can support different protocols, so verify the exact SSD and motherboard specifications before assuming that every M.2 drive works in every M.2 socket.
When you need to buy a SATA data cable
You are adding a SATA drive to a desktop
Plan on one SATA data cable per SATA drive unless a cable is already installed and long enough to reach the new drive. Seagate’s installation guidance lists a SATA interface cable among the requirements and notes that it may be sold separately. Package contents differ, so check the drive box and the computer before ordering anything.
The computer has an unused motherboard SATA port
Look at the motherboard manual or the labels printed beside the connectors. A free SATA port is necessary for a direct connection. Also check whether another device or a port-sharing rule already uses that connector; the board documentation is the authoritative source for the available layout.

The motherboard has no SATA connector
A compatible SATA host adapter or controller card can provide a port, but it is a conditional solution rather than a universal fix. Confirm that the computer has a suitable expansion slot and that the adapter supports the operating system and the drive you intend to use. Sony’s installation guidance also warns that not all computers support SATA drives, so check the model specifications before purchasing hardware.
You already have a suitable cable
If a cable is plugged into the drive and a motherboard SATA port, there is no performance benefit from replacing it solely because it is already in use. Replace or reseat it when it is damaged, too short, does not latch securely, or troubleshooting indicates a cable fault.

When you do not need a SATA data cable
An SSD is going into an M.2 slot
An M.2 SSD is secured directly to the motherboard’s M.2 socket, normally with a small screw or retention mechanism. That installation does not use a separate SATA data cable or a conventional SATA power lead. Read the motherboard and SSD manuals together: slot support, keying, and supported drive types vary by board.
You are replacing a drive with an existing cable
When the old SATA drive is being removed and the replacement uses the same SATA interface, you can normally reuse the existing data cable if its connectors and length are suitable. You still need to connect the replacement drive’s power lead.
You are working with an external drive enclosure
An enclosure may expose USB, Thunderbolt, or another external interface instead of a motherboard SATA port. In that setup, follow the enclosure’s specified cable and power arrangement rather than buying an internal SATA data cable by default.
How to install a SATA hard drive or 2.5-inch SATA SSD
- Confirm the interface. Check the label, manual, or product specification for “SATA.” Do not use this procedure for an M.2-only drive.
- Shut the computer down. Turn it off completely, disconnect AC power, and follow the case and motherboard maker’s safety instructions before opening the chassis.
- Find a mounting position. Secure a 3.5-inch hard drive in its intended bay or a 2.5-inch SSD in a compatible bracket. Keep the drive fixed so cable tension cannot pull on its connectors.
- Locate a motherboard SATA port. Use the board manual to identify an unused connector. If no connector exists, stop and verify a host-adapter option, expansion slot, and operating-system support before proceeding.
- Connect the data cable. Push one keyed 7-pin connector into the drive and the other into the motherboard SATA port or host adapter. The keyed shape prevents reverse insertion; do not force it.
- Connect SATA power. Attach a PSU SATA power plug to the drive’s wider power socket. A data connection without this lead will not make the drive operational.
- Route and secure the cable. Leave enough slack for the case layout, avoid sharp bends and fan blades, and close any latch if the cable has one.
- Close the case and test. Reconnect AC power, start the computer, and check the firmware or operating system’s storage list. A newly installed drive may still need partitioning and formatting before it appears as usable space.
If the drive is replacing a boot device, follow the computer’s documented cloning or operating-system installation procedure separately. Connecting the hardware does not automatically copy data or make the new drive bootable.
Choosing the right SATA data cable
The defensible product description is a 7-pin SATA data cable. SATA data cables perform the same basic signaling role; the practical differences are fit, retention, and reach.

| Variant | When it helps | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Straight connector | Works when there is clear space directly in front of the drive and motherboard port. | It does not establish a higher transfer speed. |
| Right-angle connector | Helps when a side-facing exit clears the drive cage or improves cable routing. | The angle is a fit choice, not evidence of faster data transfer. |
| Latching connector | Reduces the chance of accidental unplugging when the cable or case is moved. | A latch does not change the interface’s rated performance. |
| Longer cable | Useful when the drive bay and motherboard port are far apart. | Extra length is not automatically better; excess cable complicates airflow and routing. |
Seagate’s installation material states a maximum SATA interface-cable length of 39 inches (1 meter). That is the manufacturer’s installation guidance, not a universal purchasing recommendation for every chassis. Choose the shortest length that reaches without strain, while staying within the guidance for the hardware involved.

- Both ends must be standard SATA data connectors, not a SATA power plug or another storage interface.
- The motherboard or host adapter must have an unused, compatible SATA port.
- The connector orientation must clear the drive cage, side panel, and nearby cables.
- The cable must reach without pulling on either connector or crossing moving fans.
- If the computer is unusually old, verify SATA support in its model documentation before assuming a new drive will work.
What to do when the drive is not recognized
Work from physical connections to compatibility rather than buying parts at random. MSI’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking both ends of the data cable, checking SATA power, consulting compatibility information, and trying another data cable to isolate a cable problem.
1. Check the data connection at both ends
Power the computer down and reseat the connector at the drive and at the motherboard or host adapter. A partially inserted plug can look connected while failing to make reliable contact. Inspect the cable for crushed sections or damaged plastic.
2. Check SATA power separately
Confirm that the PSU plug is fully seated in the drive’s wider power socket. If the drive shows no sign of operation, the data cable alone cannot correct the missing power connection.
3. Try a known-good data cable or port
Move the data cable to another compatible motherboard SATA port, if the manual permits, or substitute a cable known to work. This separates a cable or port issue from a drive issue. Do not disconnect a storage device that contains the active operating system unless you understand the boot implications.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
4. Verify hardware compatibility
Check the motherboard manual, the drive specifications, and any host-adapter documentation. Confirm that the board supports the drive’s interface and that an adapter has operating-system support. Sony specifically advises checking the computer model because not every computer supports SATA drives.
5. Check firmware and operating-system detection
If the drive is visible in firmware but not in the operating system, the physical connection is probably present and the remaining work may involve storage initialization, partitioning, or formatting. Use the operating system’s documented disk-management tools and be certain you have selected the new drive before making changes; formatting destroys existing data.
6. Isolate the failed component
If a drive remains absent after checking power, reseating both ends, trying another cable and port, and confirming compatibility, test the drive in a compatible computer or adapter when possible. A repeatable failure across known-good connections points away from the original cable and toward the drive, port, adapter, or system configuration.

Do all SSDs need SATA cables?
No. SATA-form-factor SSDs do; M.2 SSDs install in a compatible M.2 slot instead. Confirm the exact drive and motherboard interface before buying a cable.
Will a right-angle or latching cable make the drive faster?
There is no substantiated speed advantage in the supplied installation guidance. Choose the angle for clearance and a latch for retention.
How long can the cable be?
Seagate states a maximum SATA interface-cable length of 39 inches (1 meter) in its installation guidance. Treat that as the cited manufacturer limit for the guidance, and avoid unnecessary extra length.

The Bottom Line
Buy a SATA data cable only when your drive is SATA, your motherboard or compatible host adapter has a free SATA port, and no suitable cable is already installed. Connect that 7-pin data cable separately from the PSU’s SATA power lead. For an M.2 SSD, use the motherboard’s compatible M.2 slot instead.
