The SANDISK Optimus 5100 is positioned for creators and everyday use; the Optimus GX 7100 is positioned for gaming. Both are PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 2280 drives, but they use different NAND and have different capacity-specific performance figures. Check that your device supports the drive’s size and interface before choosing. The available official specifications cover these two models; a January 2026 report also describes a GX Pro tier, but its detailed specifications are not established here.
Which SANDISK Optimus SSD should you buy?
Choose by fit, capacity, and workload—not by the tier name alone. The 5100 offers capacities from 500GB to 4TB and uses QLC NAND. The GX 7100 uses TLC NAND and is marketed for gaming, with advertised peak figures applying to its 1TB and 2TB models. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent comparative test results.
- Choose the Optimus 5100 if you want a broadly positioned creator/everyday drive and need the documented 500GB, 1TB, 2TB, or 4TB options.
- Consider the Optimus GX 7100 if you want the gaming-positioned model and its documented TLC NAND, especially at 1TB or 2TB.
- Do not choose from speed figures alone: actual performance can vary with the host, usage conditions, and capacity, as SanDisk notes.
How the Optimus tiers are described
SanDisk’s official specifications retrieved for this comparison cover the Optimus 5100 and Optimus GX 7100. A January 5, 2026 Tom’s Hardware report describes a broader consumer naming scheme of Optimus, Optimus GX, and Optimus GX Pro, mapping the 5100, GX 7100, and GX Pro 8100 respectively to earlier WD Blue SN5100, WD Black SN7100, and WD Black SN8100 names. That is reported naming and predecessor context, not proof that every specification or hardware revision is identical. The available official material does not establish detailed GX Pro 8100 specifications or a complete current catalog.

The 5100 figures and features above are from SanDisk’s 2025 Optimus 5100 data sheet. The GX 7100 figures and features are from its 2025 data sheet. Maximum sequential transfer rates are manufacturer figures under stated test conditions, not promises of typical results; SanDisk says performance can vary with host, usage conditions, and capacity. The specifications do not establish an independent gaming advantage or a full real-world endurance comparison between the models.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What the capacity and NAND differences mean
Match capacity to your library and workload
Estimate the space needed for your operating system, applications, active projects, and game library, then leave room for growth. Compare the figures for the exact capacity you are considering: the 5100’s 1TB and 2TB models have higher advertised sequential read maxima than its 4TB model. A larger capacity does not automatically mean a higher listed peak speed.
Understand what the NAND labels establish
The official sheets identify QLC NAND in the 5100 and TLC NAND in the GX 7100. That documents a material difference in the drives’ stated memory types and helps explain their product positioning. It does not, by itself, establish which drive will be faster or last longer in your particular workload; the cited material does not provide a complete sustained-workload or real-world endurance comparison.

Check compatibility before ordering
Both documented models use the M.2 2280 form factor and PCIe 4.0 NVMe. Those labels alone do not guarantee fit or support in every laptop, handheld, console, or motherboard. Check your device’s manual or manufacturer specifications for all of the following:

- An M.2 slot that accepts the 2280 length and has enough physical clearance.
- Support for NVMe drives over PCIe in that slot; an M.2 connector can support a different protocol.
- Any platform-specific capacity, thermal, or installation restrictions.
If the device’s documentation does not clearly establish NVMe/PCIe support and physical fit, verify with its manufacturer before buying.

SanDisk lists Dashboard software for Windows on the 5100 and Dashboard Game Mode for Windows on the GX 7100. The GX 7100 data sheet also lists Acronis True Image for SanDisk for migration. SanDisk says a separate cable or enclosure may be required for migration, depending on your setup; it is not stated as a required purchase for every installation. The cited data sheets list a five-year limited warranty for both models. Check the warranty terms applicable to your region and seller.
