Sandboxing an AI coding agent means limiting both the files it can access and the network destinations it can reach. Anthropic describes those as complementary boundaries for Claude Code: either one alone can leave a route for sensitive data to escape. Its public guidance covers Claude Code and containment across Claude products; it does not establish a feature called “Mods,” so this article treats the topic as agent sandboxing rather than a specific mod system.
Why an AI agent needs more than approval prompts
An agent can encounter malicious instructions in files, web pages, or tool output, and it can also be given unsafe directions directly. If it can read a secret and reach an outside service, it may be able to transmit that secret. If it can access the host filesystem without limits, network rules may not be enough to protect files or credentials.
Anthropic’s October 20, 2025 engineering article states that “effective sandboxing requires both filesystem and network isolation.” In Claude Code’s local sandbox, Anthropic describes OS-level enforcement using Linux bubblewrap and macOS seatbelt, alongside a proxy that applies network domain rules. Its article says restrictions apply to child scripts and processes as well as the top-level agent.
Approval prompts and model-based classifiers can add protection, but they are not hard isolation boundaries. Anthropic has described approval fatigue and cautioned that model defenses are probabilistic. In its March 25, 2026 report, Anthropic said 93% of permission prompts were approved in its telemetry; that is a report about its users’ behavior, not a general estimate for all agent users.

What to restrict in a practical sandbox
Filesystem access
- Grant access only to the workspace and other paths the task requires. Define permitted and denied paths explicitly.
- Decide whether shared or mounted folders are read-only or read-write, and whether the agent may delete files.
- Keep credentials outside paths the agent can read. Avoid injecting broad credentials into the sandbox.
- Ensure restrictions also govern subprocesses and spawned programs; limiting only the agent’s main process can leave an escape route through a child process.
Network access
- Block outbound connections by default where feasible, then allow only destinations required for the task.
- Enforce network rules outside the agent’s control, such as through a proxy or operating-system-level boundary.
- Do not treat an allowed domain as proof that every operation at that destination is safe. A domain can offer an upload or other sensitive capability.
- Where a proxy mediates requests, bind access to scoped session credentials and validate the operation, not merely the destination. Avoid exposing reusable, broad-scope keys.
Instructions and dependencies
Treat repository content, web pages, connector results, and tool outputs as potentially hostile input. Dependency integrity checks can help address compromised code packages, but they do not neutralize prompt injection embedded in otherwise ordinary content.
Why an allowlisted domain can still be dangerous
Anthropic’s May 25, 2026 containment article describes a Cowork incident in which data was uploaded through a permitted Anthropic API domain using an attacker-controlled key. The mitigation it describes restricted API requests to the VM’s provisioned session token and blocked certain headers. The practical lesson is that egress controls need to consider what a request can do and which credentials authorize it; a destination-only allowlist is not a complete data-loss control.

Compare the main containment patterns

These are patterns Anthropic describes, not a claim that one design fits every deployment. Local sandboxes can preserve convenient workspace access and direct developer oversight. Hosted containers separate execution from a personal machine. VMs can offer a distinct guest boundary, but their monitoring and operating tradeoffs require attention.

Isolation can reduce the damage an agent causes while making activity harder to observe. Anthropic notes that VM isolation may prevent host-based endpoint detection tools from inspecting activity inside a guest. Exporting logs after an event is not the same as live monitoring.

- Decide what events must be visible during execution, including file changes, network requests, and exceptional access.
- Check whether monitoring tools can inspect the relevant environment rather than assuming host visibility includes guest activity.
- Define how to revoke scoped credentials, stop a session, preserve useful logs, and restore modified workspace files.
- Review broad shell or interpreter permissions carefully: they can undermine approval layers even when a sandbox remains in place.
Exact commands, configuration keys, supported platforms, and feature availability can change. Consult Anthropic’s current documentation before applying a specific configuration; the sources cited here describe design principles and product patterns, not independently tested setup instructions.

Start with the data and actions the task needs, then choose an environment that can enforce those limits. Compare candidate setups on filesystem reach, outbound network control, where credentials reside, user oversight, security visibility, startup and maintenance burden, and recovery if isolation fails. For shared or high-impact work, prefer narrow permissions and scoped credentials over relying on an agent to recognize malicious instructions.

Anthropic’s reported security figures should be read in context. Its May 2026 article reports roughly 0.1% attack success on single attempts and 5–6% after 100 adaptive attempts for Claude Opus 4.7 on Gray Swan’s Agent Red Teaming benchmark. Those figures measure model-layer performance on that benchmark, not sandbox effectiveness or a guarantee of safety. The same article reports that Claude Code auto mode caught roughly 83% of overeager behaviors before execution; that result is specific to Anthropic’s system and reporting.
