Yes—Argentine ants in San Diego have repeatedly fought lethal battles along borders between rival supercolonies. A six-month field study recorded severe aggression and estimated at least 15 million worker deaths at one Lake Hodges boundary. But “millions of ants dying every month” is a historical summary published by Scientific American in 2011, not a verified 2026 rate. The San Diego front lines have not received a comparable academic reassessment for roughly two decades.
What is fighting in San Diego?
The combatants are Argentine ants (Linepithema humile), a species native to South America that became invasive in California. They do not form one peaceful population across the region. Instead, workers belong to enormous networks of nests called supercolonies.
Workers from the same supercolony generally tolerate one another, even when they come from different nests. At boundaries between genetically distinct supercolonies, however, workers recognize outsiders as enemies. They bite, grapple and kill one another in repeated clashes.

How many ants were documented dying?
The strongest San Diego figures come from a finite field study rather than a region-wide census. Researchers visited Argentine-ant contact zones weekly for six months. The observations found abrupt behavioral boundaries, frequent fighting and mortality that varied substantially by site.

The study also reported that borders shifted back and forth without sustained expansion during the observation period. That combination—repeated combat and little net movement—created the visual impression of trench warfare.

Why researchers call it a “forever war”
“Forever war” is an analogy, not a claim that ants reproduce human military institutions. The measured pattern was a persistent boundary where encounters repeatedly became violent, while neither side steadily conquered the other during the study.
Published work reported abrupt, well-defined behavioral boundaries at 16 contact zones involving three pairs of supercolonies. At those boundaries, workers from opposing groups behaved differently from nestmates inside their own group. The borders could move locally, but they did not disappear into one unified colony.

What makes a supercolony possible?
Unusually broad nestmate tolerance
A supercolony is a network of nests whose workers share enough recognition cues to avoid attacking one another. That lets colonies cooperate across an area far larger than a typical ant nest, with workers moving and resources circulating among many sites.
Low genetic diversity in introduced populations
Introduced Argentine ants in California have reduced genetic variation compared with many native populations. That similarity helps workers from distant nests accept one another. Across a boundary, genetic differentiation is higher and gene flow is limited, so the recognition system instead identifies outsiders as hostile.

The pattern is not unique to San Diego
A 2002 study of Argentine-ant supercolonies in southern Europe found severe aggression between supercolonies and no aggression within one. Worker death occurred in 98% of inter-supercolony trials—235 of 241. Those results show that the social mechanism is a broader feature of invasive Argentine ants, not proof that every San Diego border has the same death rate.

It has not been established. The monthly wording traces to a 2011 Scientific American synthesis based on earlier observations. A 2026 feature noted that the original San Diego conflict had not been academically reassessed for about 20 years and explicitly raised the question of whether the war is still raging at its former intensity.

That evidence gap matters. Ant populations, rainfall, habitat, pesticides and the locations of colony boundaries can all change. The six-month Lake Hodges estimate demonstrates that mortality can be enormous at a particular border; it does not measure all ants across San Diego, and it cannot be converted into a confirmed present-day monthly rate without new fieldwork.

- Workers from rival supercolonies repeatedly fought when they met.
- Contact zones were sharply defined rather than diffuse.
- Mortality was often large but differed among locations and visits.
- Within-supercolony genetic differentiation was lower than between-supercolony differentiation.
- Little gene flow across borders helped preserve the divisions.
These findings support a regional map of competing cooperative networks, not a single battle involving every Argentine ant in the county.
Can household ant control stop the regional conflict?
No. A household infestation is a local branch of a much larger invasive-ant system. Baits can reduce activity around a building, while residual liquid insecticides and granules are other control categories used in management programs. Products must be placed according to their labels, especially around children, pets, food and drains.

Practical response to ants indoors
- Remove food and water sources, seal obvious entry points and clean trails so new workers are less likely to follow the same route.
- Use an appropriately labeled bait where ants are active, allowing workers to carry it back instead of immediately spraying over the trail.
- Monitor activity for several days and replace or reposition bait if ants avoid it.
- Expect reinfestation to be possible; regional Argentine-ant populations can refill treated areas quickly.
- Contact a licensed professional when activity persists across rooms, returns after treatment or involves inaccessible nests.
Those measures address a property-level infestation. They do not reunite supercolonies or end fighting along San Diego’s regional borders.
What can be said with confidence?
San Diego’s Argentine ants have documented rival supercolonies, lethal contact zones and very high worker mortality. The best-known numbers—roughly 15,000 deaths in an average observed battle and at least 15 million at one Lake Hodges border over six months—belong to an older, limited study. “Millions every month” remains a historical description, not a confirmed 2026 census.
