Samsung’s 27-inch Odyssey G8 G80HF pairs a 5K (5120 × 2880) IPS panel with a 180Hz refresh rate—and can switch to QHD at up to 360Hz. That combination is the source of the generational whiplash: ultra-high-resolution gaming and genuinely high refresh rates are being presented in the same mainstream monitor announcement.
What Samsung announced
The Odyssey G8 G80HF is a 27-inch gaming monitor with 5K resolution and a quoted pixel density of 218 pixels per inch (PPI). Samsung announced global availability on May 19, 2026, in its U.S. newsroom, saying the monitors could be ordered through Samsung.com and select retailers. A U.K. newsroom release dated May 22 repeated the G80HF’s headline specifications.
Those are manufacturer specifications and launch claims, not independent test results. The announcement does not establish input-lag measurements, response-time behavior, image-quality results, or a minimum graphics-card requirement.

How fast is the 5K Samsung monitor?
5K mode: 180Hz
At its native 5120 × 2880 resolution, Samsung rates the G80HF for up to 180Hz. This is the mode for users who want the monitor’s full spatial detail: small text, fine game geometry and desktop applications benefit from the higher pixel count.

QHD mode: 360Hz
Through Samsung’s Dual Mode feature, the display can switch to QHD (2560 × 1440) and reach up to 360Hz. QHD renders fewer pixels, reducing the workload compared with 5K and allowing a much higher refresh ceiling. It is a choice between detail and motion headroom, not a way to run 5K at 360Hz.
Whether a particular game reaches either limit depends on the PC, graphics card, game engine, settings and connection configuration. Samsung’s launch material does not report independent frame-rate or latency testing, so the mode’s practical benefit should be judged against the hardware driving it.

What Dual Mode changes
Dual Mode is a resolution-and-refresh-rate switch. In 5K mode, you get the panel’s native 218-PPI image and a maximum of 180Hz. In QHD mode, you give up pixels for a maximum of 360Hz. Samsung Canada presents this as a way to choose high resolution for slower, visually rich games and higher refresh for fast competitive play; that is a use-case explanation from the manufacturer, not an independently verified competitive advantage.

How it compares with Samsung’s other 2026 Odyssey displays
The closest resolution-focused alternative in Samsung’s announcement is the 32-inch Odyssey G8 G80HS, described as the company’s 6K gaming monitor. Samsung rates that model for 165Hz at 6K and up to 330Hz at 3K through its own Dual Mode approach. It uses an IPS panel and has a quoted density of 224 PPI.
Samsung also announced 4K OLED Odyssey models: an OLED G8 rated up to 240Hz and an OLED G7 rated up to 165Hz. OLED changes the panel technology and therefore the image characteristics; resolution, refresh rate and panel type are separate buying decisions.

| Model | Size | Panel | Native resolution / refresh | Alternate mode | Pixel density |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Odyssey G8 G80HF | 27 inches | IPS | 5K at up to 180Hz | QHD at up to 360Hz | 218 PPI |
| Odyssey G8 G80HS | 32 inches | IPS | 6K at up to 165Hz | 3K at up to 330Hz | 224 PPI |

| Odyssey G7 OLED | Not stated in the cited announcement | OLED | 4K at up to 165Hz | Not stated | Not stated |
The 6K G80HS is not automatically “better.” It offers a larger screen and more pixels but a lower native refresh ceiling than the G80HF. The G80HF reaches 360Hz in QHD, while the G80HS reaches 330Hz in 3K. An OLED model may appeal if panel characteristics are more important to you than IPS-based 5K or 6K detail. Select based on the games you play, desk distance, graphics hardware and tolerance for each panel technology’s trade-offs.

Why the announcement feels unusually futuristic
For years, buyers commonly had to choose between very high resolution and very high refresh rates. The G80HF puts both options in one 27-inch panel: 5K at 180Hz for dense detail, or QHD at 360Hz for speed. That does not make 5K gaming universal, and it does not guarantee that a typical gaming PC can exploit either maximum. It does make the choice visible in a single mainstream product, which is enough to make anyone who remembers 60Hz 1080p monitors feel suddenly ancient.
Samsung Executive Vice President of Visual Display Hun Lee described the 2026 range as “our most advanced display technologies yet” and said the company was expanding access to its innovations. That is Samsung’s launch positioning, not an independent assessment of the G80HF’s performance.
