Samsung does not currently run Galaxy phones on a wholly independent operating system. Android remains the foundation, while Samsung builds One UI, Galaxy AI, its apps, privacy controls and hardware integration on top. That partnership gives Galaxy users faster access to advanced AI, but it also leaves important parts of Samsung’s roadmap dependent on Google’s software, models, services, policies and release schedule.
Android is still the foundation of Galaxy
Google’s 2025 and 2026 announcements describe Galaxy phones and wearables launching with Android and receiving Google services such as Gemini and Circle to Search. Android supplies the underlying platform, while Google controls major parts of the operating-system framework, service integrations and update cadence.
That means “Galaxy OS” is best understood as a layered experience rather than a separate Samsung operating system. A Galaxy phone can look and behave differently from another Android device, but it still depends on Android underneath.

What Google supplies
- The base operating system: Android provides the platform on which Galaxy phones and wearables run.
- AI models and services: Gemini and related Google capabilities are integrated into Galaxy experiences.
- Platform features: Circle to Search and other Android AI functions can arrive through Google’s platform releases.
- Developer and service infrastructure: Samsung benefits from Android’s established app and services ecosystem instead of having to recreate it independently.
What Samsung adds
- One UI: Samsung’s interface and system design shape how Android works on Galaxy hardware.
- Galaxy AI: Samsung-branded tools and workflows combine Samsung software with Google-powered capabilities.
- Personal Data Engine: Samsung’s S25 materials identify this as part of its own Galaxy AI and privacy-focused experience.
- Samsung apps and controls: Samsung decides how its applications, privacy settings and device features fit together.
- Hardware integration: Samsung can tune software for its phones, watches, foldables and other Galaxy products.
The partnership is expanding beyond phones
Google’s announcements increasingly present Samsung hardware as an early or prominent vehicle for new Android AI capabilities. The relationship now reaches across the Galaxy ecosystem rather than stopping at smartphones.

Foldables and Google AI Pro
Google says 2026 Samsung foldables include a six-month trial of Google AI Pro. The offer connects a Samsung hardware purchase with Google’s subscription AI service, showing how the two companies can use the same device launch to promote both Galaxy hardware and Google’s services.
Watches and intelligent eyewear
Google also describes collaboration extending to Galaxy Watch and intelligent eyewear. As more device categories share assistants, accounts and AI features, Samsung’s experience becomes more dependent on whether Google continues to provide compatible models, services and Android support.
The Galaxy S26 example
Google’s February 2026 announcement specifically documents Gemini-powered features and Scam Detection on the Samsung Galaxy S26 series. Some Scam Detection functionality is specified for English in the United States, and Google says availability varies. The example shows both sides of the arrangement: Samsung supplies the device and Galaxy integration, while Google supplies important AI capabilities and platform support.

Samsung’s own technology versus Google’s
Galaxy AI is not a single technology owned entirely by one company. Samsung owns the Galaxy-branded experience, its interface, device integration and parts of its software stack. Google supplies Android and major AI components such as Gemini. A feature’s branding therefore does not by itself identify where every model, service or processing step comes from.
Samsung’s Galaxy S25 announcement described the relationship as a shared Android-with-AI vision and said:
“It’s the starting point of a shared vision with Google to imagine Android with AI at the core, bringing together developers and partners from around the world.”

Gemini integrations can work across Samsung and Google apps, while Samsung controls how those capabilities are presented and connected to Galaxy hardware. The practical result is a hybrid system: Google’s platform and models underneath, Samsung’s product decisions on top.
What Samsung controls—and what it does not
| Area | Samsung’s role | Google’s role | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Interface | One UI design, settings and Galaxy workflows | Android platform requirements and releases | Samsung can differentiate the experience but cannot set the entire platform direction. |
| AI | Galaxy AI features, device integration and branding | Gemini models and Google AI services | Samsung can package AI quickly, but important capabilities depend on Google’s models and policies. |
| Apps and services | Samsung apps and Galaxy-specific functions | Google platform services and Android ecosystem | Users receive a combined Samsung-and-Google software stack. |
| Updates | Samsung’s delivery and support commitment | Android releases and underlying platform changes | Samsung promises support, but major platform changes originate outside Samsung. |
| Hardware integration | Phones, foldables, watches and eyewear integration | Compatibility with Android and Google services | The ecosystem works best when both companies maintain compatible roadmaps. |
The adoption numbers show why the relationship matters
Samsung Mobile Press reported several company-reported milestones in 2025:
Rank #4
- TYPE IT IN. TRANSFORM IT FAST: Enhance any shot in seconds on your smartphone by using Photo Assist¹ with Galaxy AI.² Add objects, restore details, or apply new styles by simply typing or tapping
- MAKE IT. EDIT IT. SHARE IT: Turn everyday moments into something personal with creative tools built right into your mobile whether it’s a special contact photo, custom wallpaper, an invitation or more³

| Claim | Qualification |
|---|---|
| More than 400 million Galaxy AI devices | Samsung’s goal for the end of 2025; this is a company target, not an independently verified installed-base count. |
| More than 70% of Galaxy S25 users using Samsung and Google AI tools | Samsung-reported usage among Galaxy S25 users. |
| Tripled Gemini usage on the latest Galaxy S series | Samsung-reported comparison; the announcement does not establish that the increase applies to every country, model or user. |
These figures explain the strategic value to both companies. Samsung can offer advanced AI without building every model and service alone. Google gains distribution through one of the world’s largest Android manufacturers, putting Gemini and other services in front of a large Galaxy user base.
Long support commitments deepen the ecosystem tie
Samsung’s Galaxy S25 announcement promises seven generations of operating-system upgrades and seven years of security updates for the series. That is a substantial longevity commitment, but delivering it requires ongoing compatibility between Samsung’s software work and Google’s Android releases.
The promise therefore strengthens both Samsung’s ecosystem and its dependence on the platform underneath. Samsung controls the customer-facing update process, while Google remains responsible for major parts of the Android foundation and associated services.

The strategic trade-off for Samsung
Using Google’s platform and AI investment is faster and less expensive than creating an entirely separate mobile stack. Samsung receives a mature developer ecosystem, established services and access to rapidly improving models. It can concentrate on hardware, interface design, privacy controls and differentiated workflows.
The cost is strategic dependence. Google controls major pieces of the base operating system, AI models, service integrations and release cadence. Samsung can influence the Galaxy experience, but it cannot fully determine the underlying platform’s direction.
| Decision axis | Samsung-Google partnership | A more independent Samsung platform would require |
|---|---|---|
| Control | Shared control: Samsung shapes the product layer while Google controls core platform and services. | Samsung would need to control the operating system, models, app distribution and update timing itself. |
| Differentiation | One UI, Galaxy AI, Personal Data Engine and hardware integration provide Samsung-specific layers. | More of the stack could be uniquely Samsung, but the company would have to build and maintain those layers alone. |
| Speed | Google’s platform and AI investment can reach Galaxy products quickly. | Independent development could reduce reliance on Google but would likely require more in-house work before launch. |
| Economics | Both companies can use the same hardware launch to distribute services and AI subscriptions. | Samsung would have to create alternatives for platform services and user monetization. |
| Privacy and data handling | Experience depends on how Samsung and Google divide on-device processing and cloud services for each feature. | Samsung would have direct responsibility for the full data and processing architecture. |
| Longevity | Samsung promises device support, while Android releases remain a critical dependency. | Samsung would own more of the update schedule but also the full cost of maintaining it. |
Will Samsung replace Android?
The 2025 and 2026 announcements describe a deeper shared Android-and-AI strategy, not a plan to replace Android. They provide no announced timetable for Samsung to move Galaxy phones to a wholly independent operating system.
A full replacement would involve more than designing a new interface. Samsung would need a competitive operating system, app and developer support, AI models and services, distribution mechanisms, long-term security updates and compatibility across phones, watches, foldables and eyewear. The current partnership gives Samsung immediate access to those capabilities, which helps explain why its present strategy emphasizes differentiation on top of Android rather than abandoning Android.
What Galaxy buyers should expect
- Galaxy phones will continue to combine Samsung software with Google’s Android and AI services.
- Some features will be Samsung-specific, while others may also appear on other Android devices as Google expands platform capabilities.
- Availability can differ by device, country, language, carrier, Android or One UI version and account requirements.
- AI features that rely on cloud services may change as Google updates models, policies or subscriptions.
- Long Samsung support promises do not eliminate the need for Google’s underlying Android releases.
For buyers considering a Galaxy S26 or another recent Galaxy device, the important question is not whether the phone is “Samsung” or “Google.” It is which layer supplies the feature being evaluated, where that feature is available, and how much of its future depends on both companies continuing to align.
