To force restart a frozen Samsung Galaxy Z Flip, press and hold the Side key and Volume down key together for more than 7 seconds. Let go when the phone restarts or the Samsung logo appears. This button restart is not a factory reset and does not erase your data.
Force restart a frozen Galaxy Z Flip
- Find the Side key and Volume down key on your Z Flip. Use the physical buttons; the screen does not need to respond.
- Press and hold both keys at the same time for more than 7 seconds.
- Release the keys when the phone restarts or the Samsung logo appears, then let it finish booting.
Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip6 user guide gives this procedure for a frozen, unresponsive device. Samsung’s general guidance also uses a hold of more than 7 seconds. Button names, placement, and behavior can differ by Z Flip generation, so check the manual for your exact model if the layout differs.

Force restart, normal restart, and factory reset are different
- Force restart: Use the Side and Volume down keys when the phone is frozen or its screen will not respond. It restarts the device; it is not the data-erasing reset.
- Normal restart: If the touchscreen works, use the on-screen power menu to restart instead.
- Factory data reset: This is a separate, later troubleshooting step that restores original settings and completely erases data. Back up important information before considering it.
Samsung describes factory reset as a distinct troubleshooting option in its Galaxy smartphone troubleshooting guidance.

A fully depleted battery may not show a charging indicator immediately. Connect a Samsung-certified charger and cable and allow the phone to charge. If charging does not appear to work, try another known-good charger and cable. Charging is a step for a phone that may have run out of power, not a requirement for force restarting a phone that is still powered but frozen.

- Check for software updates: Install available updates using the phone’s settings when it is responsive.
- Check storage and memory: Low available space or memory can be relevant to recurring problems; Samsung lists these as troubleshooting checks.
- Try Safe mode: It can help assess whether a third-party app is involved. If the phone behaves normally in Safe mode, investigate recently installed apps.
- Reserve factory reset for later: It erases data, so back up first and use Samsung’s instructions for your model and software version.
If the phone remains unresponsive after these steps or you suspect physical damage, contact Samsung support or an authorized service center. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance also identifies support or authorized service as the next step for unresolved problems.
